As you count your rostygold in the Department's foyer, a would-be Eradicator approaches you. Her coat is too big, and her pistol too small. "Been watchin' you fight. Where'd you learn all that, then?"
Delicious friends! The third of our Making your Name updates to early Fallen London content is now live! This content is intended to improve the early experience of newcomers to Fallen London, by accelerating advancement and streamlining content .
Explore the dangers of Watchmaker's Hill and Wolfstack Docks. Choose a scar you earned in battle. Align yourself with one of the Neath's new martial traditions! Were you educated in the School of Hard Knocks, or the Forms of the Tomb Colonies? Perhaps you subscribe to the Adventuress' Correspondence Course, or invented a martial practice of your own?
Established players will be given the chance to revisit the heady days of their youth. Whether you choose to reset your progress or not, you will also receive the new qualities (including a scar and a tradition) that you would have gained if you were starting fresh.
This is the third of four updates updating the early levels of Persuasive, Dangerous, Watchful and Shadowy, in advance of the launch of Fallen London on iOS. Here's a blog about our wider changes.

Cheeky question: Will repeating the great Wolfstack Docks battle potentially give us more Connected: The Masters?
I'm always eager to raise that stat. edited by Shalinoth on 9/22/2015 That's not part of the tracker (at least, I don't think it is. I'm working my way through the duels now, which I remember being after the docks battle.)
On an unrelated note, I'm quite disappointed that "Bishop of Southwark wrestling" is not a valid fighting style. I hope it's unlockable somehow. Perhaps as part of diocesan intrigue, or as a reward for breeding a Hound of Heaven?

Well this is annoying and silly. The Adventuress' Correspondence Course lowers your hedonist skill when you select it! If you're a Han Solo type, which is one of the more common archetypes of characters people play in FL, you're both a) very likely to choose that style, and b) very likely to prize your high hedonist skill. Moreover, the flavor of the thing doesn't suggest anti-hedonist at all! Since when are hedonist and daring opposites? If anything, they're aligned!
Hope there's some sort of reset code.

OI chose the furthest-along option because I was afraid of having to re-do the first coil, but Seeing as how Feducci, Chi-Lan, and Mr. Inch have all disappeared from the list, I think the game is assuming I've killed them all already.
No - as you advance your Fearsome Duellist quality by winning duels, those opponents will become available.

Well I've arrived back in London after my first term as governor so I don't have the actions to do anything yet. For some reason though the lowest level open assumes already having completed the worryingly large rat contract; that's where I've chosen to start, but why is there no way to start with 0 of the making your name quality? Purely because we don't want to hit brand new players to Fallen London with a patch storylet as soon as they escape New Newgate. But don't worry! If you choose the earliest entry point you can still accept a contract for a Worryingly Large Rat at the Department of Menace Eradication.

Thanky you for answering most of my doubts. Only a little weirdness remaining:

To get up to Fearsome Duellist 5, which is necessary to unlock the Mr Inch/Labyrinth of Tigers content, you need to keep fighting; in your case you can fight Mr Inch up to FD 4, then Chi Lan and/or Feducci to get to 5 (and above, should you choose). For those who haven't permanently killed Cap't Vendrick, he would get you as far as FD 5. Ok, so this means the rework ignores your FD value if you say you have accessed the Labyrinth as I did? The rework left me with FD 2 (got to 3 after a few fights for rostygold), that with the new prerequisites isn't enough to challenge Feducci, let alone enter the Labyrinth. The staff thought everyone that reached the LoT had already ground to FD 5 or would replay the content or this little glitch only affected me?
(I'm not trying to make it a bigger issue than it actually is, probably I'll get it over 6 eventually, it's just that details sometimes get under my skin and I'd like to know where the problem comes from. Yep, I can be punctilious like that, I'm sorry)
The legalistic answer, then, is that if you chose the furthest option on the tracker (the Labyrinth) you are exempt from the new structure of the Fearsome Duellist quality and are grandfathered in even with a low or non-existent level, because you basically indicated that you didn't want to go back and do that content again. You still may raise it by replaying the duels, but you're not given free points in it just for saying you're at the Labyrinth, since it does require some grinding to achieve.

Unless Failbetter has further modified Storynexus recently, a storylet (the things that appear at the root level of a location like "Wolfstack Docks") is always invisible if you don't meet the requirements. A branch (the choices that appear inside a storylet) can be set to be visible or invisible if you don't meet the requirements. I imagine this is part of why all the duelling opponents are now located inside a storylet ("Challenge a Black Ribbon Duellist") -- so you can see all of them even if you don't meet the requirements. (Except Captain Vendrick, who's hidden if you don't meet his requirements -- possibly because there's no way to satisfy his "Duelling with the Black Ribbon 2-5" requirement if you've already killed him, which sets that to 6.)
However, what's odd now is that in that storylet, all the branches have a requirement of Running Battle... 5 even though they're all redirects that go to a duellist-specific storylet which always has a higher Running Battle.. requirement. This disjuncture isn't really needed anymore now that they're all branches -- if they're set to be visible even without the necessary requirements (and they appear to be set that way, except for Vendrick) then they could all have their proper Running Battle... 8 through 15 requirements and still be visible. The setup Optimatum is talking about makes more sense for storylets at the root level (like Rob the Bazaar and Rob the Brass Embassy are in the Flit.)

It's apparently intended that you can't replay the Battle of Wolfstack docks. The reset text has also been clarified.

Ah, my good chap, I believe you have misunderstood. Regarding your first question, Fearsome Duellist rises with each duel fought, so while some opponents will only bring you to, say, FD 3, that is a range of up to 3, not jumping directly to 3.
For your second question, I believe the 'new stories' are the new opponents that become available to you as you work your way up the chain to becoming a Fearsome Duellist. As I have done this content after the recent changes in Dangerous with a lower-level alt, there is no 'new' new content, i.e., completely new storylets, just a reworking of the content that was previously available.

2. What are the "new stories" promised by that Story stat?
I believe this is a message that your Name Scrawled in Blood has increased. Thus the "new stories" are the storied that become available with higher values of NSiB. So for example defeating the spider council unlocks the Black Ribbon so the Black Ribbon is the "new story" being referred to. And defeating the Black Ribbon unlocks Mr Inch so that's the "new story" etc

Well this has been a truly drastic amount of Dangerous cp. Is there any way to do the same with the other stories (Watchful and Persuasive)? It would save me an enormous amount of grinding, and I certainly wouldn't mind replaying either of those stories if there was some way to reset them.

Definitely this. My disgraced bandit chieftain has been returned to me. In somewhat more disturbing news I have the baptised remains I had been seeking to complete my Ratness collection(disallowing any items left on my doorstep by Trojan rats).

After you join the black ribbon, who and how many times do you have to fight its members before being able to proceed to the next level? It has been a while since I did this part of the story, and I don't remember what step came next.
Once you get to Fearsome Duellist 5 you will get an auto story that opens the next level.
As you fight the Black Ribbon your Fearsome Duellist quality increases, each opponent has a different cap so be careful not to waste your progress by fighting somebody at a low level. Mr Inch will take you to 4; Father Norton to 3 and Colonel Pomeroy to 2. As you need to get it to 5 to move onto the next step you will need to face Chi Lan or Feducci who only appear when it gets to 4.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.
No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

Fearsome Duellist was a deeply underused quality, so we repurposed it for the Black Ribbon section of the Dangerous content. We've done something similar with A Procurer of Savage Beasts, too.
