Risking Permanent Loss of Persuasion Messages in this topic - RSS

Hi

I'm really new and probably really incompetent. I'm also afraid of being unintentionally gauche. But I'm looking at An Unusual Competition in The Shuttered Palace (which I am only visiting on a day trip) and choose to offer my contribution I risk "permanently losing my persuasion." I take it permanent is used with its ordinary meaning--as in never getting it back. Wouldn't that be totally catastrophic to future progress? Why would I ever take that risk.

Forgive me for I am both young (in game terms) and niave.

I believe it's just a drop, you can get it back. (Though this was also something I worried about when I first saw it. Avoided that option for a long time.)

If your Persuasive is over 200 (the current cap, able to be exceeded by spending Notability), then you'd have to spend more Notability to increase it above 200.

But if your Persuasive is below that point, it's just going to be a reduction to your Persuasive quality - so don't lose sleep over it. :-)

There are very few things in the game which will permanently punish you for your actions.

The few I know of are:
- Going to jail will make it harder (but not impossible) to decrease your Suspicion using Nikolas & Sons Instant Ablution Absolution. Going to jail multiple times will make it progressively more difficult to gain benefit from the stuff. (I'm not sure what happens if your Criminal Record reaches a certain point, nor am I inclined to find out.) Note that you can still reduce Suspicion in other ways rather than relying on Ablution Absolution.
- Dying and playing chess with the boatman will steadily make it more and more difficult to win. (Until eventually, winning will reduce your Wounds but increase your Nightmares by the same amount if you succeed.) But there are other ways to recover from that rather than playing chess.
- Losing your soul and recovering it multiple times will increase the cost of the recovery, though I've yet to do that even the once. ^_^

So don't be afraid to explore the game and see what's out there. If there's something seriously harmful ahead, the game will usually let you know.
I got caught in a turbine explosion just the other day and was blown to bits. Twice. But I'm still alive and kicking again. So there's that. :-p

Well, your character is permanently punished with some lousy opp cards if they buy certain premises, and you can cut yourself off from certain options with previous choices, such as with the Cheery Man decision. And you can lock yourself out of certain areas before you want to go (university, court). But I appreciate that I'm nit-picking.

Oh, I agree there are certainly unfavourable options. But it's not like some games where there are terribly punitive choices you will stumble into. It's not as though this game has permadeath for example, y'know?
Like, I still have the Struggling Artist 'opportunity' card in my hand purely so I stop drawing the thing; and I missed out on finding Exhibits for the Labyrinth of Tigers because I unlocked that too early; and there are various Lodgings I regret having purchased. But none of them are horribly crippling.

My point was that there aren't a lot of things you can do that will screw you over entirely. (Except maybe romance the Struggling Artist. :-p )

As for the University / Court, I haven't played the University storyline for a little while but I'm quite certain it mentions that proceeding will cause you to cease being a Guest Lecturer - and I know for certain the Court one makes it clear that you're going to be kicked out if you proceed that way, and gives you an option to continue as you are. (Or at least, it did that before the Persuasive progress update - and I strongly doubt they would have removed that warning label.)

Yes, absolutely. There's plenty of warning in the court that you won't be coming back. University, I seem to recall being surprised (and disappointed) that I couldn't go back to the regular days carousel at the university, as it was before trying to form my own department. It was a nice place to unwind and lose a few nightmares (or get some wine). I really had hoped that I could go back to that. Oh well.

FBG reopened hunting exhibits for everybody a while back, so thankfully this was only a temporary burnt bridge.

thank you all so much. The word "permanent" gave me pause but I shall take a deep breath and charge in. Or perhaps sidle. I don't actually have that much on the line, being a newbie. But I'd hate to cut myself out of a chunk of the game, as it is indeed a wonderful game.

Ooh, I wasn't aware of that! I'll have to go track that down again. Thankyou! :-D
Though in case I or others can't find it, is it still have 85 Dangerous and go to Wolfstack Docks? Or should I be looking somewhere else to begin finding exhibits? It's been a while since I've looked this one up, and I can't quite remember where to go to start it.
I know I've already mentioned it here, but it bears repeating.
Piece of advice: If you have the option to romance/seduce the Struggling Artist, don't.
Unless FBG fixes it somewhere down the line it will become an annoyance at late-game, if you have.

Yep, Wolfstack Docks is where you start your hunt. The exhibits are located throughout London after you build the quality up high enough.
