I am a bit curious of experimenting with the "misfortunes" of Fallen London. However, I do not want to have my dreams reset like it happens when you reach Nightmare 8. So I would like to know, do the other menaces have the same effect on Dreams?

Suspicion and wounds do not. *spoiler* I had a short return to Newgate where I made several new acquaintances but did not lose my dreams. I have, several times, died in pursuit of the Black Ribbons and have not lost progress while sailing with the boatman either.*/spoiler*

I greatly enjoy meeting delicious new friends and participating in deliciously exciting new adventures! Please feel free to drop a card to meet for dinner, exchange favors, give an interview, or any other activity that comes to mind. I DO particpate in exchanges requiring Fate, BUT you must contact me first; twitter, facebook, or here on the forums via PM.

Note: I am currently exchanging parcels with a large number of dear friends and my parcel opportunities are rare. I am always willing to exchange but your rate of return may be rather slow. To find others to exchange with I recommend the Starveling list.

Hi, we've changed things a bit so you now don't lose all your dreams progress when you go mad, only some of it. See http://community.failbettergames.com/topic53-new-content-and-game-changes-for-december-2011.aspx

Nor does Scandal. Nor do the Mirror-Marshes, if your nightmares send you there. Only the Royal Beth hits your dreams.

Pretty sure the Mirror Marches still decrease your Dreams.

And I think the other menace places do decrease a related progress quality, like Casing for New Newgate. But don't quote me on that.

New Newgate does get rid of all your Casing progress, but thankfully doesn't touch your Seeking or any other Shadowy-related qualities.

I believe that the Slow Boat also removes Running Battle.

I always found it odd that you go to the Royal Beth when you go mad, but it's also one of the the most prestigious places to live. So when I go mad, I go...home?

The propriator of Royal Bethlehem offers free rooms to mad people, for unclear reasons. He seems to just be particularly fascinated by madness, but who knows? In Fallen London, everyone has their own strange agenda, it seems.

I assume that, when paying residents go bonkers, they have an extra maid or two assigned to their suite - the kind who can dole out their pills and put them to bed and stop them from wandering out into the street.

Yes I know, but I'm very jealous of my dreams, I want to keep them all smile

So, to summarize...
- a state of some confusion takes away a good chunk of your dreams (and... ?)
- the exile in the tomb colonies... ?
- the new newgate prison - > the casing progress + ?
- the mirror marches - > dreams again (?not sure?) + ?
- the slow boat - > the running battle progress + ?
...and are there more places of menace?

There are only 4, 5 if you count the mirror marches. State of some confusion takes away some of your dreams progress (It used to take away ALL dreams, but these are quite difficult to raise so it was changed), prison takes away casing, slow boat takes away running battle, and I'm assuming being exiled takes away the "fascinating" quality. Mirror marches does NOT remove your dreams, and in fact one way to ensure you keep your dreams is to keep a memory of light on hand so you go to the marches instead of the state of some confusion.

Now, these are all mainly secondary problems with places of menace. Outside of dreams, you don't keep most of these qualities around: Usual method is to take whatever venture you're doing, spend your time solely raising the quality, then complete the venture in one go. So unless you're unlucky enough to go to a place of menace while raising one of those progress qualities, you likely won't lose them to menaces.

The main bad side to places of menace is simply that they are horribly inefficient places to be, and that's putting it lightly. While in a place of menace, you're unable to advance any of your storylines (Unless of course that storyline requires you to go to a place of menace, most do not), and storylets and opportunity cards rarely, if ever, offer more than one change point in a stat, if they increase one at all. Don't expect to farm items in places of menace either, there's a few unique items, often tied to the aforementioned rare storylines that require you to go there, but other than that there's not much to be earned. Finally, in getting out you'll most likely LOSE items and stats: Most storylets will cost one or the other, and some opportunity cards do as well. In either case, time spent in a place of menace is time not spent getting stats and items, or at least not getting them as fast as you should.
'
That said, getting out of a place of menace isn't TOO difficult. The options to reduce the menace from within the place of menace usually reduce the menace quality more effectively than places outside, so some folks advocate not worrying about menaces too much, and simply reducing the menace once you get moved to the appropriate place.

Of course, the best option is simply to avoid getting menace qualities in the first place! Grab second chances, and try to stick to modest difficulty, chancy if you must, when grinding stats (Low-risk and straightforward are even safer, but only give 1 change point in comparison to modest's 2... yeah, not worth only getting half the stats).

You are forgetting places of menace for ambitions. I once was buried alive by a gentlemen known as "Poor Edward".

I think New Newgate is the best to visit.

Grab the Prison Shiv and meet the Repentant Forger before you escape. The Prison Shiv will decrease the time on subsequent visits and Reluctant Forger is a handy contact on the outside.

make sure and grab all the menace reduction clothing/weapons. One of the best investments out there considering the prices for most of them.

I was just in the Mirror-Marches, and upon my departure my Recurring Dreams: Is Someone There quality fell from 4 to 2. So I can confirm that the Mirror-Marches do, in fact, damage one specific dream quality.

How significant are the losses in dreams from A State of Some Confusion? I'm considering a certain terrible idea that may require me to forget some dreams, but I'd like to know how much I'd be risking.

(Is Death By Water 8 too high to get the SMEN start card?)

I...don't think that's possible.

A more reasonable question might be, what if another menace hits 8 when you're already in a failure state?

It's entirely possible, as there are several times when you can gain multiple Menaces in the same action (e.g. the hungry well option at Hunter's Keep gives both Wounds and Nightmares). It just requires some work to line things up right.

Oh, it very much is. I've heard that seeking a certain name can land you in multiple places of menace simultaneously, and other actions exist which increase multiple menaces at once.

I believe the way it works is that after you leave one area of menace, you get sent to the next one.

An easy way to find out would be to equip a Horsehead Amulet, Cheerful Goldfish, and Sober Dress, then remove them all at the same time once you've hit 8+ menaces.
