Continuing Pigmote question

When I dealt with pigmote on my most recent captain, I sided with the cavies since I liked the reward they gave better than the rat's reward. I did succeed on the hearts challenge afterwards to intercede on the rat's behalf (I actually delayed doing the island for some time so that I could build that hearts score up) and remember that affecting the 'A Knight Out of Habit' variable, but on seeing this new version of the island apparently the rats got enslaved anyway. Is there anyway to change that or do I have to start a new captain to get that version of the story?
