The Iron Republic cycle is the best (and easiest) way of raising Austere beyond the level 10 cap. There's an entire guide on the subject that I'll link to. http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Republic's_Agricultural_Growth_Manual_for_Austere_and_Hedonist_Caps

Basically, it involves reaching Day 27 to succeed in the wounds challenge to increase Austere as far as level 15. Eventually, after going through specific options on the island, you'll reach Day 40. Here you'll go to Day 42 via picking the "Express your disapproval" option. From there, the next and only option will place you back at Day 8 where you can start the entire process over again. Once you've gotten your fill of Austere, simply pick an option that will break your loop and allow you to finish your stay at the Iron Republic.

I recommend grinding a couple levels of the Wounds menace before you depart out to zee, since the challenge itself has a narrow chance at level 5. After you've cashed in your sweet collection of Iron Republic Journals to either sell at the Bazaar or stow away in your private library of lawlessness, I recommend heading to Hunter's Keep to bring your Wounds quality down to a survivable state so as for you not to drop dead in London on arrival. Once you get Time Passing in the Southern Archipelago up to level 3, the game will continuously autofire the "What happened?" event, thus nuking your Wounds quality you've no doubt racked up until it reaches 7. Or you could just, you know, die in London and ride out your sickeningly elongated trip down the Silent River until you spring back to life. If you choose to take the latter option, be sure to say hi to Death for me!

Thank you for the link! Of course I'm failing all the relevant challenges, so I suppose I'll be here a while.

This was also my first time at zee with the revamp. Zailing was so much better with 5 cards.

Another option for breaking the Iron Republic cycle is to, once your Austere is where you want it to be, take "A Firm Hand" on Day 34, which puts you at Day 38, where your Wounds will be set to 6. That can help you exit the Iron Republic at, if not a reasonable level, at least one that is salvageable without making a trip on the river.

Should I have purchased multiple gangs of hoodlums? I forgot how annoying the luck challenges can be.

And I can acquire multiple Iron Republic Journals? I think I'm missing a step...

I'm pretty sure you can only have 1 Gang of Hoodlums. The Iron Republic Journals you get at the end, after you're all done looping.

Please do not send SMEN, cat boxes, or Affluent Reporter requests. All other social actions are welcome.

Are you a Scarlet Saint? Send a message my way to be added to the list.

I earned 750 echoes from selling my excess Iron Republic Journals after going from 0 Austere to 15.

The "Changed by the Iron Republic" quality that keeps increasing as you go can be traded in at the end of the rollercoaster bit by bit for Journals and menace reduction (though, as has been mentioned, there are probably better ways to bring your menaces back under control after doing the loop).

Oh, I didn't realize you could get all the journals at the end. That's very convenient.

That's what I'm hoping for!

I don't think you can have additional gangs either, I just enjoy lamenting my terrible luck. smile I am waiting to see how high my wounds can go...

I made a map to help me with the Iron Republic grinding. There is a very useful branch toward the end that will set your scandal below 8 while you are leaving (scandal being much scarier because of the quirk reduction in the tomb colonies). I hope you all will find it useful.

Here is the current version of my map.

EDIT: I should clarify that all the data came from the wiki and things may have been changed without the people who help with the wiki noticing.

Congratulations, Mark! May I ask how you utilized the new Persuasive tracking system to become a Scarlet Saint?

Thanks! Unfortunately, I wasn't keeping careful notes as I went. But - since I hadn't yet been kicked out of the Palace - I picked the lowest available option for Name Writ In etc., then played through all the stories. Every time you get a Name Writ In upgrade, you get to pick from a selection of options, some of which gave you Hedonist CP. In addition, having a Menage a Trois with the Melancholy Curate and His Sister gives Hedonist CP (and I believe is repeatable, though don't quote me on that). Since I had Hedonist 10 with 10 CP, that was enough to get me to Hedonist 12, though between that and having just returned from exile I lost all my Austere in the process. Then a quick trip to Zee to visit the Iron Republic and get my Austere back up, and then to the House of Chimes.

Intriguing, most definitely intriguing. I've no idea whether or not having a Menage a Trois with the Melancholy Curate and His Sister is repeatable, but I have heard on the wiki that the option to access the Intrigue: The Curate and His Sister quality was locked of to someone after reaching Persuasive 65. The urge to slowly erode my Persuasive skill in hopes of repeating the storyline is tempting. So awfully, terribly, dreadfully tempting.

It's no longer locked/unlocked based on Persuasive (mine is way above 65). It's now based on Name Writ In X.

I believe it is tied solely to the "Making your name" quality now. So grinding stats down wont help, though you could use this access code ( http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/a/anameresigned) to go back to that point on the persuasive track. Be warned, the code only works once.

Well darn, and here I had the perfect excuse to ruin all my character's hard earned skills. Thanks for the warning before my actions were irrevocably far beyond redeeming.

Strange, I've never heard of this access code. Before I click it, I'd like to straighten out a few things just to be clear on what I'm about to do. So, if I use this code it will erase all of my A Name Signed with a Flourish quality? Considering I've been kicked out of The Empress's Court, would that mean I won't be able to progress the quality to its highest point once more?

When I used it, it offered me a menu of choices for what I wanted my Name Signed with a Flourish quality to be. But I haven't been kicked out of the Court, and that may effect it. It's supposed to repeat the storylet that was triggered when they first introduced the Name quality, I think.
