If a person wanted an IRL tattoo designed by Mrs Clathermont (that is to say, by FBG's graphic teams), where might they one day inquire? What might a rate be on a drawing of something particular based on an existing concept - like the Wheel of Mists?

I'm not certain what the official answer to this might be, but perhaps try sending an email to enquiries@failbettergames.com
(Or, if that's not the correct contact method to use, then I expect they should be able to tell you what is.) edited by Kittenpox on 7/18/2015

It is the correct method to use, but it's not a service we offer as a company. 'FBG's graphic teams' is my co-founder, Paul, who's always got a long list of work - but you never know - he might be up for a private commission. He won't come cheap, though.

I may have imagined this, but:
Didn't Paul design anchor and buoy tattoos during one of the Kickstarters?

There was that one time! More here (there's a link to the designs from the post)

We still hold the IP on those designs, I guess. If I understand copyright law correctly, that means the limb you get inked is the property of Failbetter; if you get your torso tattooed, we are entitled to claim the closest major internal organ.

It might be one helluva fun to get some actual lawyers' viewpoints on this one.

Yep, that's definitely how copyright law works. If you were to tattoo your head, I think Failbetter owns all ideas you subsequently come up with. Caveat emptor.

But if I travel East, will my possessions be seized from you?
The concept that interests me is of an image referencing the Wheel of Mists from Sunless Sea, as well as the Carnival from Fallen London - perhaps a foreground/background overlap of the two. A flavor of business and intrigue, rather like the higher level Watchful gain action on the Great Games's card. As a political worker IRL, the idea of the Game appeals very much.

Here is an actual response from our very cool lawyers.
"Dear Sirs We act for Failbetter Games. We can confirm that the lighthouse artwork referred to above is an original copyright work belonging to our client and according to applicable copyright laws (including but not limited to the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988) any reproductions of the same on any medium are ipso facto Failbetter Games property. This includes mutatis mutandis reproduction on human (or other) flesh in the form of tattoos. Furthermore, as previously stated by Mr Kennedy of our client, any storage media (again including flesh) housing reproductions of our client’s intellectual property rights will also become its property or, at our client’s discretion, must be destroyed. We trust that this answers your concerns and look forward to prompt delivery of any and all relevant legs, arms or other bodily organs or appendages now the property of our client. Yours faithfully Purewal & Partners"

(he adds: )
But srsly. The lighthouse logo is Failbetter property, clearly, but if someone reproduces a copyright work as a tattoo, can the copyright owner
stop them? There are good legal arguments that the copyright owner could stop it, but we don’t *know* for 100% certain because no copyright laws in any developed country have specifically ruled on it (either through legislation or case law). Occasionally these issues crop up though. For example, the tattoo artist behind Mike Tyson’s facial tattoo sued the makers of the movie The Hangover II for mimicking the tattoo in that movie (the case settled). For more information, you might enjoy this article in which a few lawyers geek out on this very topic… Jas @Gamerlaw edited by Alexis on 7/23/2015

Well whenever you need it you can send me a letter and I'll try and pop my left arm in the post ASAP. Or you can send a courier with a hacksaw if you feel there's a risk of the royal mail losing it in transit, which is not an unreasonable fear.
