Succulent, Exceptional Friends! July's Exceptional Story is here!

Dark birds. Hungry mirrors. The death of an Emperor. A revolutionary who’d sell her future for one last day of sunlight.

What waits in Parabola? What will you surrender? And who will you save?

Play An Exceptional Story: A Musical Diversion to begin.

Lost in Reflections is a collaboration between Richard Cobbett, writer of the Empire of Hands and Saviour's Rocks in Sunless Sea, and our great and glorious leader, Alexis Kennedy.

Please remember to be liberal with your use of spoiler tags when discussing this story. If you're unsure whether something is a spoiler, use the tag! Here's a reminder of our position on spoilers and guidance.

In addition to a new, substantial, stand-alone story every month, Exceptional Friends enjoy:

  • Access to the House of Chimes: an exclusive private member's club on the Stolen River, packed with content!
  • An expanded opportunity deck: of ten cards instead of six!
  • A second candle: Twice the actions! 40 at once!

(To retain this story for playing at a later date, you must play through the related storylet in the House of Chimes. This will save it from the monthly changeover.)

I guess it boils down to different expectations. Because of the relatively fleeting nature and huge number of Exceptional Stories, I generally don't go in with the expectation that these stories must or will have major impact or rewards of consequences. Since they are all-level stories I don't really go in expecting to get rich either. On the other hand I do mess about all the time...

I can see why you'd think you deserve a souvenir though. Capped players with notability just flat out bleed a whole level of stat that is hard to earn back, and presumably the big payoff will only come in the future under very specific conditions in form of Paris Jujubes, which is only one choice out of four. Having the other three choices tell you explicitly "no consequences will come from this story now, here is some generic goods that might not cover your cost" can be a wee bit disappointing.

Here, something to hang on your Mantelpiece.

If you've played a reasonable amount of storylines in Fallen London -- including non-fatelocked storylines -- there's a strong pattern that "selling someone out" gets you more rewards than following compassion, a higher sense of morality, or trying to help someone's well-being, The Cheesemonger, the University, the Affair of the Box all come to mind. If you're really worried about the ramifications on your EPA, you can read these threads in advance.

And as for what Failbetter and Fallen London would lose if there were decent-sized rewards handed out for all choices: the case has been made before this that you can't have anything approaching a real "moral dilemma" in gameplay unless there's something at stake. If "doing the right thing" and "acting purely out of self-interest" get you even close to similar rewards, it's a much less weighty decision. Bioshock is the classic example of this kind of "not actually a matter of right and wrong, just a matter of Path A and Path B, because you basically have nothing to lose."

This story is an interesting case, because in FL what's often "left behind" by a low-reward moral choice is an intangible quality of mysterious value, and the most prominent intangible here is the futures. This time around, you're sacrificing that as well of you want to "do the right thing." But you could have read spoilers to know what that entails, and this is a case where you can't have it both ways: either value the echoes and read spoilers, or value the story, don't spoil it, and take whatever your story-driven choices bring you. The story and the moral tension in gameplay would suffer otherwise.

I mostly just wanted a crack at that violin, which is clearly the real off-limits wonder-item in all this. *cracks knuckles*

I enjoyed this a lot, especially since I'm a completist and the mechanics allowed me to really explore different possibilities. And the atmosphere and the choices were great--especially since I didn't realize at first that I would be able to explore more, so one set of choices was the subject of much thought.

Let's do some permalinks, here, for the final options with their immediate material rewards, just so people don't have to scroll back and everything's all in one place:

option 1

option 2

option 3

option 4

I just bought this story for 45 Fate and played through it in one sitting (echoed from here). I can only join in the praise! I feel like I just left the cinema after watching a gripping alternate-history thriller! But that last choice... god, it took me almost half an hour to decide what I would do, there was no "right" choice in the true sense of the word. I would've liked being able to "really" save July, but FL never gives us easy options like that, does it?

An absolutely minor disappointment was only that there was no option involving my "Backstage" destiny which is so heavily linked with Parabola... but yeah, totally minor.

More of this, please! wink

Easy, now. I think the issue was less in the discrepancy and more in how wide the discrepancy is, which is a valid reason for criticism. It's more negatively worded than I would have phrased it had I found the degree of discrepancy an issue, but apart from that I think it's a fine bit of feedback.

RandomWalker's post above has links to echoed journal entries with three of the endings and rewards in the titles. There's also the "premature ending" which I don't think anyone's echoed yet. The fourth ending (giving back the mirror, which was echoed further back in the thread) gives you an already-available pet of a kind that's mentioned in that echoed text. It's the least valuable option in terms of echoes, perhaps since it's the "do the right thing" option?

I must say, on the other hand, that I'm not quite sure what the "right thing" or the motives of some of the figures are in this story, once again -- these Exceptional Stories are pretty good for moral dilemmas so far! After all, what is a true revolutionary if not an imaginary street-violinist whose past gives way to prophecy? I like the spread of rewards -- 185 echoes of stuff and that coveted Masters CP for the "power & greed" option (which I think involves a collection, not a cabinet?); about a third as many echoes plus a hard-to-make POSI item from the unfaithful opposition; a fifth of that value for the long-term gambler's option that lets you keep one of eight possibly-relevant futures; and a little bit less still for the "do what she really wants you to" ending.

Also really enjoyed the amplified G.K.-Chesterton-in-the-Belle-Epoque feel of this story, all the way to the quality names ("The Professional!") The Great Game's more flashy up on the Surface. But I think my favorite aspect of this story is that...
...the various future dreams you can glimpse reference each other, and July's future-dreams. Even if you choose to be a painter rather than a sniper, you watch someone carry out the assassination, and if you choose to be a thief rather than a painter, you're offered the painting of the assassination, painted by someone-who's-not-you, as a price for your loot. Quite nice for a multiplayer story game, and I like that players have the option to crawl through ALL the branches for the low, low price of "half the effect of a Bottle of Oblivion."
Kudos, writers!

I thoroughly enjoyed this content and with the ending I picked I figured that the future you pick could begin to manifest itself as content somewhere down the line. That was enough for me to be satisfied as it means that there will be some extremely exciting things to do in the future which might end up being more profitable than selling out and bringing a halt to the potential future you pick.

Me being happy might also be because I'm not entirely used to getting great items anyway lol

About Surface politics...
When talking about Paris, they keeping referencing The Emperor.
Does this mean that, due to the Fall of London, Napoléon III either did not lose the Franco-Prussian War or that it was never begun?
And that Prince Imperial Louis Napoléon, never fought and died in the Anglo-Zulu War?

Or is it possible that the Third Republic Fell due to The Great Game's handling of The Dreyfus Affair, leading to a new Bonapartist regime?

How much has the Fall changed the fate of Surface politics?

I thought this was an excellent, very atmospheric and satisfying story ... and it ended on a particularly exciting note, since I discovered (on an alt) that after giving back the mirror, the option to Consider it didn't disappear! In other words, an infinitely repeatable 12.5epa action.

In the White Hat spirit, I just tested the loop a few times and then waited to post this until support@failbetter replied that it had been fixed. But I expect there will be people who bought action refreshes just to exploit this as hard as possible while it lasted ...

I've been replaying good old Star Control II when I had a terrible realization about the Orts:
You think you *see* Orts but Orts are not *light reflections*. Maybe you think Orts are *many bubbles* too. It is such a joke. Orts are not *many bubbles* like *campers*. Orts are just Orts. I am Orts. I am one with many *fingers*. My *fingers* reach through into *heavy space* and you *see* *Orts bubbles* but it is really *fingers*.
I'll add my voice as well to all those praising the story.
Absolutely delightful lore, and beautifully written and structured.

As someone has mentioned before in this thread, it's at the same level as The Gift. I especially appreciate the ability to play (and replay) all options.

As for rewards, I don't expect very expensive items at the end of such stories, since they are aimed for characters at all levels.

However, it would have been nice if there was some memento item to remember the story by. I'm thinking as in the end of The Gift, in which you receive a neutral Affiliation (no need for a new card to go with it, though!). Over time I think it would be very nice (and nostalgic) to look at our Affiliation tab in the expanded inventory and see these little mementos of past Exceptional stories, reminding us of choices that we've made.

Re: "what's right"...
This exceptional story makes for a really interesting pairing with the story of the Missing Heiress and some of the attendant controversy about that story from years past. Once again it's not clear what the heroine's agency is, but this time around the player has a greater ability to investigate and puzzle through the various fragments of information about the character -- some of that at the cost of actions and attribute CP, which is a great tradeoff. The July you talk to in Parabola is a partial memory-wraith, formed of what July's given up in exchange for glimpses of a future where she steers kingdoms and saves a city from falling. In that future, July is no longer in a fugue-state of "remembering the future," she's a clear-headed and steely revolutionary. It makes sense that the memory-wraith would want events to turn back towards the past, but it's not clear that's what the real July of the present wants, right? Of course, the Orts might be lying about all of this; the Orts might just be leeching her into madness, enslaving her to unprovable promises about the future, but you never get to talk to the Orts. (Or do you?) Wonderful philosophical musing about loss, forgotten pasts, destiny and foreclosed futures here, reflected by that Epictetus quote from the white raven in one of the endings.
Anyway, 5/5

Here's the thing - there really isn't a right choice at all, regardless of your stake and motivation.

Even if you don't care about July and just want to advance your goals, you still have the dilemma of getting something done right now (sell her out to the side you support / earn that money right now), or work toward a future that you possibly know about (so you can deal a greater blow to the Masters / ensure the Fall of Paris / steal more stuff from a powerful July), and you don't know whether the Orts and the memory can be trusted or not, or things. Everything is uncertain and prone to change, but it can be tempting to have an inkling of idea that "if things happen like this, I will have a chance to do these things in Paris with July and have a good idea of the outcome".

Of course, that is moot if you are, say, already looking forward to a future where the Liberation of Night happens before Paris or something.

It's tragic, really. The Third Republic is, to this date, our longest and most stable form of government and now a bunch of Britons have taken that away in their alternate history! *shakes fist* Perfide Albion etc.

It could also, theoretically, be either Victor Napoléon or his more popular brother Louis of Russia, though the former did not have any children until well after the 1908 date and the latter never married.
But if history has been turned topsy turvy, then it is possible it's either one of them. But I'm guessing that it's Napoléon IV.

This might mean that Napoléon IV attended study at The University, as his real life counterpart went to study in King's College in London and was a minor character in the Royal Court. This would explain why he's not dead. He would not have been sent off to the Anglo-Zulu War for the Surface Empire if he only gained his commision in London and Fallen London wasn't fool enough to start a War on the Carnelian Coast.

This raises another wrinkle because Napoléon IV was supposed to be engaged to Princess Beatrice who, until recently, is not the most comely or technically human of paramours. Perhaps there was a flirtation with the Captivating Princess? Perhaps one's actions in The Gift could cause them to reignite their affair?

But if Napoléon IV spent any time in the Neath, perhaps that is the reason that Fallen London/Bazaar interlopers changed the events of the Dreyfus Affair, set to begin next year, to allow Napoléon to take the throne?
That might explain why he is so ready to take the Master's offer?

Hi!
Probably it'd be better if POSI extended stats were somehow shielded against these minor cut-offs which are unavoidably integrated in the story. It was a big commitment for me to reach 215 watchful, and I grugingly accept that one misstep coluld lead to 214, but this story almost set me to 213. Almost (yes, yes, I did some wrong deeds in between those two). But still, when you have about 4 CP of current stat level, and have no means to restore it other than great deal of resources...

A question on the rewards for the smashing option. an_ocelot's journal mentioned only a pet, Blake earlier mentioned that apart from the pet there was one 12.5 item and then Ian Hart earlier mentioned two 12.5 items apart from the pet. Which is it?...

The smashing option only gives a pet. I think what was referred to is the fact that any player can get two 12.5 items from July's memory-wraith while in Parabola.
Incidentally, the payouts in item-echoes for this story, including all the actions that lead up to the end, wind up like this:
43.55 echoes for smashing
47.05 for giving it back
103.05 for selling out to her former comrades
220.41 for selling out to the masters

An additional 0-5 echoes of stuff depending on whether you took the Ruthless or Magnanimous choice at the beginning, whether you spent a while exploring dialogue options and garret-searching actions, and whether you'd played through Mahogany Hall or Court of Cats. You can grind more items (Memories of Light, Inklings of Identity) repeatedly, but it's a pretty profit-poor use of actions so I didn't include that.
Overall, I still think this is a pretty decent spread for a story that can be completed in 30-40 actions, although the last one might be a little high (it could have been set based on the Bazaar-sale price of a Collection of Curiosities, which would be a mistake). I wouldn't want the two less rewarding options to rise up much, as it would damage the experience and the meaningfulness of the choice.

Come to think of it, this story kind of answers the question "What's the difference between a Vision of the Surface and a Memory of Light" doesn't it?

I preserved that future, because what July accomplished was too important. My character doesn't usually care about more than how much he is paid, but that... that was different.

But I don't even remember what I chose to do, silly me. I think I stole something, something important... And sold it. Oh, that poor memory of mine.

That was fantastic! I always like meeting new characters and July was very interesting. Her portrayal makes me feel terrible about my last choice, as I should. The intertwining of personal and over-the-top stakes really is something that Failbetter excels at.

Love the artwork. Just started with my main, and then when he ran out of actions, moved on to my first alt. And clicked blindly in the Hall of Mirrors, because I was running on automatic. So now I'm going to have to get out of the mirror marches. I'd say 'that'll teach me', but it really won't. Love the story though.

I absolutely adore the story. It has all the things I suggested early, and more.
Your qualities and stats can actually matter (I actually bothered to get revolutionaries to 50 after getting the card, just so I could try the option), it has many interesting meaningful choices, and the lore, oh the beautiful exciting lore.
Best piece of writing in quite some time. Best exceptional story, and frankly I'm very sad for non-exceptional people that wouldn't get it.

I wonder how could anyone choose anything for the last choice except to preserve their future. The promise is priceless.

Soo. A Sequel to Fallen London - Fallen Paris, coming 2030? Just how great could it be!

In regards to the reward;
If you ask the dream for a reward, she will reward you, and explicitly warn you that she will not reward you in any way for actually going through with doing what she wants. It's two 12.5 E items, in addition to the raven. Yes, you could argue that this reward can also be taken in the 'evil' endings, but it is still, in-universe, her only way of paying you for doing what she wants, and she says as much.
Additionally, I wouldn't assume that smashing the mirror is the "good" ending, even for her dream self. If I were a brilliant revolutionary agent trying to play a memory eating monster into giving me valuable information, I would certainly send it memories indicating that the plan was failing, so it's no surprise that the mirror self seems to think that's what's happening. However, in contrast, her awake self seems to know quite a few worthwhile things that her dream self doesn't, even if her mind seems mostly gone.
The 'smash it' option is certainly a simple way to make sure everything that was happening is brought to a halt, but that doesn't mean it's the best outcome for anyone, and it's well signposted that it is not the best outcome for you.
Okay, if you're just mixing and matching their names, that's one thing, I was trying to imagine an in-universe Jonathan Norrell and, uh, NO.

(OT, but quick: y'all know _Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell_ is a BBC show, right? Just finished airing in UK, still in progress in US.)

I don't think the problems in the monthly stories should always be very important. It's nice that their importance changes, that sometimes you're part of something trifling, and sometimes of something linked to the future of
the Neath and the Eiffel Tower itself.
It has just occurred to me that in fact there are *5* choices at the end of this story.

Simply put, you can choose to keep the mirror to yourself, at least for a while. That is: you can choose to reject/postpone the other choices. You can always choose one of the other 4 options at any time in the future.

The story was... great ! The character is very interesting, and the choices, even though I could do them again, left me hesitating for some time... Congratulations on making such a great storylet ! smile
The quantity of text was surprising as well, and I really liked their diversity. Thank you for such a great creation !
It was nice to learn how some of the Fingerkings work ; and all that thing about the memories taking shape and a personality for themselves to become a distorded version of the original person was very cool...and rather sad.
I was curious to see more about the Orts's nest, if there are other rooms for example, but I understand that's a monthly story so there won't be so much text... and there is already a loooooot of it ! ='D

One thing is bothering me... in all the glimpses of the future, there is only one in which your character isn't involded in the Emperor/M. Mourvèdre (I laughed when I saw this grape variety ! good one ^_^) trouble : the Persuasive future. You're here, but you're not part of the scheme. Strange, no ?
I have been incredibly busy so I delayed this story until I had more time to enjoy it. Wow, I am glad I did!

This was probably my favorite sorry in all of Fallen London so far. I loved the mechanics - waiting for a single opportunity card, then traveling around London, felt like much more of an adventure and took advantage of the map (especially the Carnival, which is typically peripheral). And the fact that you could view the other outcomes was fantastic! I wish I had viewed the other futures as well, but my first decision was very satisfying.

The writing was absolutely wonderful. I love the typically dark, humorous writing in Fallen London, but this vision of the Surface and things to come was truly a breath of fresh air. The dreams transported me to a different world, one where my character saw a future beyond grinding notability and drinking excessive quantities of laudanum. I absolutely loved it.

I think the ethical dilemma at the end really brought this story together. In the past two exceptional stories, I haven't felt very invested in the parties involved and didn't care too much who kept the house, etc.
But July was painted as a far more interesting and sympathetic character (I absolutely love the idea of smuggling light from the surface!) and the decision carried real weight from a role playing perspective. I assumed I would simply comply with July's wishes, but here I found that the obvious answer wasn't necessarily ideal. Although I might save July from suffering, what if that suffering is what leads to her role in bringing about a different future? As a revolutionary and performer who has been smuggling light, could there be any more ideal future for July?
It presents a truly difficult dilemma where we do not know if we can believe any sources and whether the outcome will be devastating or redeeming.

Please make more stories this enthralling and connected to the lore! And if you want to add even nicer rewards, I certainly will not complain. smile

This one line alone I think was enough to justify this month's subscription. I so love it.

On an unrelated noted, I wish I could pay with Fate again. Much more convenient to pay once for a large stock and then spend it on stories you like instead of fishing for your credit card every time you feel you are interested in a new story.

My first post, other than to the welcome thread, because... I so enjoyed this month's exceptional story. It captivated me and held me to the end. I even chose to lose stats to backtrack and not miss anything. The ending posed a dilemma - and my character (Fihr) didn't choose as she'd expected. She wanted to do the right thing by July, but in the end wanted a particular future more. How wonderful! Thank you, FB, a real treat.

  • (Re the Strange/Norrell tangent, here on the other side of the world from London, I'm still looking forward to the show. I loved the book, especially the atmosphere, and hope the show does it justice. Also, though some of my friends were less thrilled by it, I loved "The Ladies of Grace Adieu & other stories" set in the same world.)

I'm curious what everyone chose as their possible future... I want to potentially be the destroyer of the document but... the image of July on stage frozen with an unfathomable expression... to have the chance to be the painter of such a work of art calls to me.
What potential future were others called to?

Vavakx is very very very supportive of whatever the fingerkings do. He may be a bit biased.

Smashing the mirror is probably the best for her, perhaps not for other parties involved.

Arguably, July's memories in Parabola are a bit of a biased source too. And Paris is an important mission that you should not muddle with your mirror-breaking shenanigans.

P.S. LiR also seems to conflict with Varchas on how mirror-breaking affects the Fingerkings' power & abilities. Which is weird.

I’ve heard such good things about this story and it’s currently on sale, but I’m also working towards Paramount Presence right now so I’m concerned about the mandatory stat loss I saw mentioned.

Can anyone elaborate on that a little? Does it affect all stats or just one? Depending on that answer, it may be manageable for me or not.

I am in the House of Mirrors. Is it worthwhile taking Honey Laudanum with me? As in, is it the "normal" mirror marches from which I can make my way to the RBH and thence leave with my dreams intact? Or is it a special place and honeyed laudanum is not going to help?

I'm curious as to what everyone thought was the "good" option if any one option could be labeled as such.
Your stances on the Bazaar's ultimate goal and the Liberation of Night would play heavily into that decision. Handing down the mirror to either opposing faction could be seen as furthering the goals of a cause you may deem noble, monstrous, profitable, or simply interesting. Neither of the two are without consequence, both positive and negative, each dabbling in somewhat dubious means to reach an idealistic end.
Then there's the option to return the mirror to July. While she's not quite in what many would deem a sound state of mind (or at least what's left of it) we have to remember that the "July" trapped in Parabola isn't the actual her. It's merely an apparition of her memories, echoing thoughts from her past. Who's to say that we're truly serving the wants of the real July? One could take this option as a merciful way of allowing July to bask in an ignorant stupor far from her twisted and confusing reality. Is dragging her back really what she would want, let alone what would be best for her? Not to mention the opportunity of designing a future for yourself in Paris 1908, each future possibly serving a personal goal or end of your own.
Finally, we have the choice of destroying the mirror. This is no doubt what the memory-wraith "July" wanted of us, to free herself from the deal with the Orts and save what's left of her real world counterpart. Maybe the best option for July is to erase the visions of her future and return her sanity. Perhaps you believe her not in the right state of mind to actually make that decision for herself. While this may seem the more magnanimous of the options by keeping your deal to save someone from phantom dreams, not only are you denying aid to a cause you may or may not deem moral, but what remains of July after the more political choices lays uncertain. I assumed that the deal was still left intact, but the future you saw is smashed should you do anything but give July the mirror. Is this due to the future being altered by your intervention or is the mirror's fate similar to if you had destroyed it then and there? Is this option a way to hold true to "July" and her wishes while avoiding to support any outside factions involved?
Regardless, I found this Exception Story to be the best so far and a great way to question the morals of my character. While I myself went with what many are labeling the "right" option, I must admit that I've been debating redoing the story whenever it becomes available for purchase and favoring a certain cloaked figure instead. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter and how you perceived the whole affair.
The choice which frees July, or really any individual (as I'm willing to accept that July may not be a good person and argue that if she was you can't reliably expect her to be anymore), from manipulation that extends to alteration of the person in question via memory removal by a being known to our characters to be dangerous and unpredictable to deal with (a la: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/Teleri?fromEchoId=6046747) and which does not also put the fate of said individual into the hands of other for profit. For my character that rules out leaving her under the effects of the Orts, selling her out the Masters, especially Cups (Teleri is ambition: nemesis) or selling her out to February, with whom he was in competition (http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Challenge_February_to_a_competition) Note the line: February enjoys havoc too much, and her people will die a hundred times for her.

That being said, if you or your character genuinely believes either the Masters or Revolutionaries or Cups and February, in particular, to be "good" handing over to the mirror to them would be a perfectly "good" choice. Handing the mirror back to July seems to me to be the only option which is more "evil" in essence. You want the future you saw to happen, but you're willing to leave July to a nest of memory stealing alien beings to let it happen. Regardless of her original choice in the matter, the Orts have altered her to an extent that she is not in control pf her actions. It would be like handing an alcoholic an endless keg of beer, because you like how that turns out for you. The only situation in which that could be a "good" choice is if you think the Orts are good AND working in July's best interest, which I have no reason to believe.

    Thoughts?

So I decided to look up the "Mondragón rifle" mentioned in the text. I'm glad I did. General Manuel Mondragón was a Mexican officer and weapons designer who served the governments of President Diaz (who could generously be described as a powerful moderniser and less generously be described as a ruthless dictator) and President Huerta (who managed to betray the post-Diaz revolutionary government, alienate his American supporters, and get himself forced into exile, all within a couple of years.
To have an anarchist assassin employing a cutting-edge 1908 rifle designed by a counter-revolutionary officer who himself took part in a conspiracy that ended in the assassination of the progressive President Madero... well, I suspect the irony would not be lost on the Calendar Council. In our own timeline, Mondragón was awarded the French Legion of Honour. I suspect that might not be happening for his Neathverse equivalent. And I am generally delighted to see FL's narrative touch on this fascinating period in Mexico's history!
I got the impression that there are 2, or possibly 3, mutually exclusive unique takeaways
*Your future, which it's strongly implied will be used by some future content.
*Whatever a "cabinet of curiosities" is.
*Possibly whatever reward there is for the fourth ending option.
So of the four options, only 1 or 2 don't seem to give a unique reward. Wow.

Good heavens. That was really marvellous. I think I did the right thing in the end... I'd adore to know what happens if one sides with July's erstwhile colleague.

A very gripping narrative, and an incredibly interesting idea. I was however a little disappointed that my profession as a Glassman had no impact. It seemed like the ideal location for it as well. An option to work directly with the natives of the strange place you find yourself trapped would also have been very interesting, and no doubt in character for some of us with less than savory connections or destinies.

I echoed my last decision and a few others.

What I learnt: Fingerkings finger-lickin' suck at their jobs forever, February are forever ~Fabulously Unlikable~

A pity we don't get a new header. It'd add to the oomph and make it feel more like the Mark of Destiny.

Arrgh! I'm faced with a choice of alternatives. One is to do what I'd like to do as a player of Fallen London, for a ...unique souvenir. The other is to do what my *character* would do....

Arrrrgghhhhh! My shortsightedness is my undoing! I saw that most had chosen to do the right thing, and so decided that I would use my three characters to do the wrong things. And so my first alt to make the final choice decided to betray July. To her erstwhile colleagues. I realised that I would lose the future where I would, well, do something dramatic and terrible and cool. I just didn't think that doing so would Advance the revolutionariers' goals. I've tried hard to avoid that particular quality, and I'm so annoyed with myself in getting it now. I'm blaming my beer. This July is just too hot.

Well, like they say: A Season of Revolutions is the only way to get your Baroque to 300. Plans within plans! Wheels within wheels! Plans with wheels, and fugilin explosions!

Something odd: if you choose to loop through her future-dreams, it says it'll "cost you a little more of your past," but unlike on your way in, you don't lose attributes. In fact, each dream you see gives you around 5 CP towards one attribute or another, making it superior to grinding stats via challenges, and in a repeatable loop. Are these memories supposed to be lowering attributes rather than raising them?

Well. As I expected, I did the right thing and did not get a unique item to show for it. I echoed what I did to my Journal: use the cathyr19355 link below.

But it's a *great* story, much more gripping than the Court of Cats, with wonderful suggestions of how the world really works...Thanks, Failbetter!

Hehe, I just noticed that my opinion is currently a companion. It's almost a shame that it'll disappear, since it's such a pretty pet.
