If you haven't done so, better clear your caches in browser because FBG is revamping some of their icons!
I have a hard time getting used to the new mysteries item because the lips look really rosy. The Cryptic Clue seem too bright as a small icon.

The new caperers look really neat! On the other hand I am missing the old one that looks like a zombie outbreak already.

Hi everyone, Paul here. Thanks for all the feedback, it's extremely useful, keep it coming! More changes are on the way, including new ambition icons and a general balancing of which image is used for what. With a game the size of Fallen London, it's sometimes hard to predict how a given icon will behave across the various storylets it appears in, so I'm keeping an eye on this thread for anything that takes people aback. Thanks also for the encouragement and kind words, it means a lot.

I'm curious as to whether the Nex Refill image will be changed to go with the new luck / cardfan images. I guess it'd look something like this?

I hope they get to rather elderly images like the Duchess at some point - she'd look really cool revamped!

...is it just me, or is the Honey-Sipping Jewel-Thief way uglier than he used to be? He used to look like an Errol-Flynn-esque 'Charming Rogue' archetype. Now he just looks like a 19th-century version of Leisure Suit Larry.

Good thing I wasn't planning to hook up with HIM again, anyway! >_>

Of course, it's the fact that the Artist's Model is as glorious as ever (if not moreso) that really makes him stand out... or down.

Ironically, if they're committed to using an eye to represent confident smiles, they might have been better off using this one instead:

Getting the curve of the eyebrow in at least gives you an opportunity to imply confidence more than a super close-up of the eye itself. Of course, you also have to have room for the little number telling you how many you have...

They're all really, very nice! One suggestion: maybe swap chap1 and chapposh? The new portrait is much more refined, and fits the Entanglement with an Old Friend (who's moved up in the world) much better than the alternative.

I also like the subtly changed new Confident Smile. It's much better!

The new(est) Confident Smile looks better, but it still feels somewhat off.

Of course the crux of the problem may be the original decision to represent a smile with an eye...

Our voices were heard! New confident smile art!

Whilst I personally find the new art quite flat, I consider it a MASSIVE improvement. And finally! Confident smiles are smiles!

Anecdotal fact: I was literally just talking to Carlos about this thread and about the confident smile art when we noticed the change. Needless to say we were both exceptionally pleased and surprised. New art! I. Just. Love the change so much. Words can not express.

I think the icon could work if it was cropped differently, maybe showing more of the bottle and less of the "cork". The pictures are great though.

I wonder about fashions a bit, though. While I like a peek of shoulder as much as the next soul, it seems out of place when the guests at the party are murmuring about a flash of bare ankle. I'd love if they could find a way to depict "attractive woman" without breaking period immersion.

It shouldn't break your immersion. A quick image search on 1890s ball gowns shows that while necklines were relatively high and shoulders generally sleeved, bare shoulders were definitely known. Also, I'm given to understand that while ankles implied legs which were explicitly sexualized, shoulders didn't have the same sort of connotation at that time.

The bodice in question (I assume you mean bohogirl1) does appear rather plain, though; if she's attending the party with the ankle comments, people are likely to be murmuring about the hard times her family has fallen upon that they can't afford a properly decorous gown for her. Although I assume bohogirl means Bohemian, she probably doesn't interact with that high a level of society, and the Bohemians are...a bit less stuffy about such things anyway.

I for one really like the new style on the majority of updated icons. Jack is superb. The Functionary looks SO wry he could cut something, though the new haircut was a surprise. Very military.

The Formerly Struggling Artist looks like a pompous ass: PERFECT. Confident Smile as a smile and non-uber-feminine is quite inspired, actually. Both Forgotten Quarter arts make me sigh.

Only the Urchin looks like it needs, eh, bolder outlines or something? Something about the outline of the head feels off and I can't place it. The pose and wary urchin-ness is spot on, though.

I feel bad about complaining now, since I know there was a lot of work involved. I agree that the confident smile doesn't really match without the dark border - but it's a smile. smile

I love the new art and my (unrealistic) hope is that we get more varied images, especially for cards. I'm always disappointed when I think I'm going to get a certifiable scrap from the marsh house but it's shroom hopping again... I'm unreasonably happy that the A Visit card now has a calling card as the image. It just makes more sense than a visit being outwardly indistinguishable from dreams of thunder.

I... can't decide if what bothers me is the new style or if I just hate change. Probably both. I do dislike the new style - most of it is so... flat, and just seems to have less "character" than the old. It's not bad, it wouldn't bother me if it had been like that when I joined the game, but almost every time I notice a replacement it makes me unhappy.

Some of them I didn't notice at all - public, package, rats... And, okay, the Bazaar card IS incredibly pretty. But I don't like the new Magnanimous, Functionary, urchin, Cryptic Clues, cards, heist, message, the gentleman friend whose actual name I forget right now...

Suddenly seeing things change to ones I like less bothers me enough that I'm starting to consider dropping the game for a few months and coming back once the update is done and I don't have the old images fresh in my mind any more. upset

Lyme's the same as ever, looks like. It's a shame that [the secret ambition] doesn't have a special icon to match the others! Chapposh has been updated to be suitably besuited, and the Duchess has an interesting profile option now.

Lots of purple in this update! And the Everlasting Candle is now properly green. I hope that the Patent Scrutinizer Deluxe will been updated to match its inferior cousin at some point!

I wonder if we can assume these are used throughout the relevant ambitions (e.g. that the new nemesis.png is used throughout the Ambition: Nemesis content instead of the old knifeting.png), and update the wiki accordingly?

Oh I was just being silly - my winsome dispossessed orphan hasn't been updated, just the normal urchins/grubby urchin.

I would love an update to the books and lodgings keys. It's confusing to glance at my inventory and see half a dozen nearly identical icons. I feel that my epic poem and Gothic novel deserve ornate covers.

I just noticed the new souls on the CVR card and was going to come over here to comment. I like the new art as well.

If I mistake not, we also have a new Magnanimous (and other helpful action) icon, and this icon for the Myrrh-stained roses/Heartless looks new:

@Danko I could be mistaken, but I think we've already gotten new art for Sudden Insights and Hard-Earned Lessons, they're just more subtle changes than the others:

The new pawn is definitely my favorite of the whole revamp so far.

New icons today for Urchins, Magnanimous, the Cards so associated with Heart's Desire and the Glass, the ubiquitous Lens icon (Nephrite Lens, Solving Cases, Patent Scrutinizer...), and Master Thief (and Hastily Scrawled Warning Notes).

I'm particularly fond of the new, distinctly grubbier urchin, and of the fresh bait for us players of faro, baccarat, and certain games with stakes higher yet.

Was the great game card's art also updated today, or did it happen earlier and I missed the fact?

I like most of the new art, but I hace to say the new prisoner's honey looks a bit odd (but still tastes delightful) Also:

I have to agree that Stolen Kiss/Memento of Passion could probably use a little brightening. Even if this is London.

However I disagree that the simple style was better; even without the consideration that it's now more consistent with other newer art and Sunless Sea, I think the new versions are more evocative. And less confusing, in some cases. I was never clear on why the Duchess appeared to be eating a live rat -- she certainly doesn't seem Northridden.

Also, some feedback on the CMS side rather than the art: It would be nice if the lodgings cards could make use of the actual housing art, especially seeing as we have that new Bazaar card already running around with the Premises art.

You have gained 1x Sudden Insight? (new total 2).

Seconding that, the eye seems too wide and round. This time the updates are pretty notable though and looks even nicer!

    Looks even more punchable now!

  • The art for Foreign Currency is also quite distinguishable in it's colouration now, it's oddly quite purple-ish. In general everything seems a tiny bit brighter, which I'm not certain fit's the rest of the design, but whatever.

It was a little startling at first, but I've grown used to the new skeleton in my deck.

Lovely female Contable from a Watchful 50 storylet in Ladybones Road! (This might or might not have affected other Constable-related art)

It sure is shiny. I'm assuming that this'll also become the new item icon for the Antique Constable's Badge at some point, then?

I feel like this really hit the nail for "Antique" - a closer look would reveal that it is a fist, but at first it look really old and cracked.

Hmm... no, not that one. I was referring to the 'drop of honey' icon, where it's dribbling from a spoon. I saw an updated version of it somewhere, but now I can't find it again - at least, not the big one. There's a tiny version in the inventory, of course, but I saw the large-scale on some random opportunity-card.

That's the one. Looks much better than it used to.

In general, the small icon filenames end with "small". By removing that part (ie, going from http://images.fallenlondon.com/icons/honeysmall.png to http://images.fallenlondon.com/icons/honey.png ), you'll get the larger picture. I believe I linked the honey in this very thread soon after it changed.

I really think the artist or artists have been improving and maybe finding their way toward a clearer style since the revamp began. The new Jack is so striking!

I wonder about fashions a bit, though. While I like a peek of shoulder as much as the next soul, it seems out of place when the guests at the party are murmuring about a flash of bare ankle. I'd love if they could find a way to depict "attractive woman" without breaking period immersion.
