I wonder if the Scuttering Squad has any play in the Big Rat storylet?

Many of us are long past that point, but I am also eager to hear if that is now the case.

My guess is no, and I hesitate to go back and replay the story to find out. Maybe... We'll have to consider.

I'm playing the story now and have seen no Scuttering Squad involvement. (Of course, the character I'm playing the Big Rat story with is too poor to be able to *afford* a Scuttering Squad.)

Oh, I wouldn't suggest using fate to find out or anything, I just was curious for those who were low enough level to take a look. It IS a storylet you get when you likely aren't rich enough to have one.

When DO you get the Big Rat storylet? I'm over 50 in all my stats and I haven't seen it yet and I could've sworn it came up that early.

Possibly returned after a long hiatus. Please do not send live rats or tournament requests.

Do we suppose that there's to be more of the Scuttering Company than the new Pet and the Trojan's Cat-in-a-Box? Are there Rats Still To Come?

I just got a card pitting the Midnight Matriarch against the Scuttering Crew.

The circumstances forced me to take sides, and I am partial to rats -- but apparently that was the wrong answer. Very wrong.

Please tell us you echoed that, or can you at least tell us what happened?

I didn't see an echo on his journal. You must give us DETAILS. It will be hours at best before I can set aside what I'm doing to go purchase the Midnight Matriarch.

Sure -- this is a SPOILER!

Ms.Midnight apparently ate one of the Crew and a military standoff was taking place in my home.

The card asks you to side with the Cat or the Rats.

I felt sorry for the salt-of-the-earth little guys and scolded her.

My only reward for this was the loss of all my Memories of Light (45 in all) and a two point jump in nightmares.

I got nothing else...no boost in Sympathetic to Ratly concerns, no jump in Magnanimous, no thanks from the crew ...nothin!

I was disappointed with the outcome and I'm very curious to see what siding with the Matriarch produces.

I dislike cards having one "right" answer.

Sorry I failed to echo it!

So do I. There is no right answer to this card. These two companions really don't like each other.

the only good rat is a dead rat
on a string wrapped in brown paper and sent through the postal system.

Still, are menacing petconflict cards like that with no real benefits going to be a more common thing from now on, or is this one just a once-off?

Is this by any chance undiscardable? I confess to a perverse fondness for such cards. I remember this one story-related card I used to draw, which was all like 'The Constables are coming for you, in great numbers, right now!' And I was like, nah, come back later when my Shadowy is higher.

I have since foresworn such things, but self-restraint isn't as fun as compulsion, which is I think a nice source of tension.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure there are plans within plans at work.

Heavens! I'm glad I stuck by my established retinue of Sahiba, Prometheus and Epimetheus - the Tigress and the Ravens, you know. Perhaps they are not so very Shadowy, Watchful and Dangerous as the best of the best, but they are excellent and erudite company, and reliable.

I think the petmenace card is really flavorful, and I like the idea. I don't know that I'll ever find a use for it, but it will be nice to see, if just for the chance to read what it says

I like the idea too, and hope there are more pet cards down the line. A lot of the older pets have their own unique cards, and it'd be great to see them coming in with the newer pets too (like, say, the Exceptional Rose pets). It makes them feel more alive, and less like just another piece of clothing.
