Normally, the Forgotten Quarter unlocks as part of the Genial Magician's storyline, but if you take the Satisfied Magician (or, presumably, the Urbane Magician) as a legacy, you don't get to do that storyline. Is there any other (known) way to unlock it? There is only the one thing in there besides that storyline, but it is quite a valuable thing (and as far as I know there's only one other place to get one).

If we're thinking about that same thing, it's not unique. I've found it in two more ways (of which I only remember one). And it's not the only thing that can be used for THAT thing either.

That's probably the least profitable way of acquiring that item.

Valuable? Eh... Unless there's another use for it now, the only (non-mascot) use for it is that one quest, for which there's a much simpler alternative.

The last (and so far only) time I kept the Satisfied Magician as a legacy option, my next char started with the Genial, Not-so-satisfied plain vanilla one. I assumed that was normal and intended behaviour. Was I wrong?

Yes. Are you *sure* that you selected to keep the Satisfied rather than Genial version? If so, that's a bug.

That was a seriously old game I started early last summer... it also had a couple other issues, so I'll attribute it to that.

I'm only aware of two items that can satisfy that one quest requirement: the one we're talking about, and the one you get by killing one of the hardest monsters in the game. And that has a whole bunch of other things you can usefully do with it.

I'm also only aware of one other place to get the thing you get from the Forgotten Quarter, and while it is decidedly more profitable, it's also much more chancy. (The wiki tells me there's an additional way to get it, but only as a once-per-captain event which may have occurred elsewhere.) In terms of optimal long-run strategy you're probably right that one should get it there, but I can see someone not wanting to attempt it.

Turning it into the curator is still by far the most profitable option. None of the others give anywhere near the same level of reward. Also, those things really aren't that hard, tbh.

That's pretty much the only place you should ever use that one-time chance anyway, so yeh. Hope you get it there, if not, go hunt one of those monsters. Or ten. Or thirty.

I've done the other place with only moderate stats and there was pretty much no risk by that point. Just bring a few extra candles to be safe.

Also the monster in question isn't actually all that tough, their ranged attack does extremely little damage, despite LOOKING incredibly epic. (...well I guess if you're in a steam launch that could be a problem but.)

Sonic blastwave attacks get nastier effects if you're under half hull. But otherwise, theirs are a (good) joke.

Does it raise terror? I remember the pre-Iron equivalent killing your crew ludicrously fast, but I don't remember that happening when I fought Lorn Flukes recently.

If you go in with decent health and have either a decent engine or an avid suppressor (or both) you should be able to pretty consistantly avoid the ram which means the screaming is the only damage you'll take. (And if your ship has been upgraded at all--which it has to have been if you're using an avid suppressor--there's some room for error with the ram dodging.

I obviously would not try this in the starting steamer; I'd just go get the skull from the non-forgotten quarter option. And also obviously this does not hold for the OTHER monster that screams you to death. :P

If your hull health goes below 50% the ranged attack will raise terror. I have no problem killing them in my Corsair but I have Iron and Mirrors above 100 with A Lump of Blue Scintillack, Helltrasher, Memento Mori and The Serpentine. It's definitely not something to engage in a Steamer with a starter gun and engine.
