I'm not sure quite what to pursue next. I don't have a room in a tower at the bazaar yet, but I"ve got the other two 4-card lodgings. I haven't finished the investigation into Jack of Smiles because I'm not sure whether or not to try the fate-locked content. I don't yet have the safe conduct for the Iron Republic that I need to complete what's available of my ambition. I haven't finished replacing the ingredients I used to make my Bifurcated Owl yet. I have a Yacht, now, so zeefaring isn't really all that rough, I haven't really tried the polythreme content at all. No telling what else I'm not done with that I'm not remembering. I think there's a ton of things in the sidestreets waiting for me to mess with them.

Grinding watchful while working on my newspaper? Why, that sounds like the perfect combination! Seems like Doubt St is the way to go. Thanks all for the suggestions.

MW can be gained by upconverting Memories of Distant Shores, Tales of Terror, Zee-Ztories, Visions of the Surface, or Scraps of Incendiary Gossip. You can also side-convert these items (50 items convert into 51 of another 3rd tier item of a different category).
You can repeat this loop endlessly (some side conversions won't give MW), and it won't cost you anything (you'll gain 50p worth of items for every action). The average seems to be ~1.5 CP of MW per action.

You can buy some connected with 10000 proscribed materials. The relevant card will come endlessly once you have more than a hundred. Note that the option to buy C: Masters with Proscribed Material is a spectacularly bad deal. It costs 400 echoes of Material for 1 CP of C: Masters, but the rare books option on that same card is instead 375 echoes of harder-to-obtain items for 3 CP of C: Masters. So while getting the items for that option is more difficult, it both costs less in terms of raw item value and gives bonus items during up-conversion. edited by Optimatum on 3/11/2017

Also, you can grind MW at the Singing Mandrake in Veilgarden. My preferred option is Writing a Lewd Satirical Song about the Grand Hunt, because while it requires a Tale of Terror and Journal of Infamy as prerequisites, the items are not consumed. You will gain scandal and wounds, and it lowers connected to Hell, but it is repeatable and a good way to grind up a few levels without chewing through items the way that upconverting does.

If you have all four Acquaintances you can cycle through them to get your CtD up to 14 for a prize. It's what I did.

I made a list of stuff to do a while back here. It's a bit out of date, so I'll endeavor to update it a bit:
Have you EVERY house? All PoSI items? Is your equipment maxed? Have you an Overgoat? Is your Master Thief at Uniquely Larcenous? Newspaper Accomplishments at The only source of truth, An unmatched circulation and How high does this go? Experienced Zailor at A Zee-Voyager of Note? How high is your the Boatman's Opponent? Have you maxed out all your Quirks? Have you maxed out all of your Connections? To at least 150? Connected Masters at least 8? Did you get the Consonant Violin? Iron Republic Journal? Anarchist's Sabel & Neddy Jacket? Bifurcated Owl? Clothes Colony and Unfinished Hat? Devious & Mystic Ravens? Do you have a Rare Pet? A Bat with Attitude? Does your mantelpiece display a singular item and a singular accomplishment? Have you every item in the game including things like Primeval Hints, Trembling Amber and Unusual Love Stories? The highest K&C medals? Waxail Knife? How many Cryptobotanical Rosettes do you have? Are you Seeking the Name?(It's Fallen London on hard mode) Written every short story, from Unloved to Classic?

You get it with a rare success on the Parliament of Bats card. I call mine Battitude.

There is one day in particular which takes a massive chunk of souls (i think like... 200 or more, but that might just have been how many i had at the time) if you have any: If you don't have the souls with you, then they aren't in any danger. The Iron Republic is a fairly big place, though: in my five trips there I've only hit that storylet once, so it's not massively vital. But it could still come as a nasty surprise if you end up on that day. I don't remember which day. Just That Day.
