After trying out Fallen London first and liking it, I decided to get Sunless Sea from Steam. I'd heard it can be slow and painful, but I find i'm really struggling.
I do know all the usual starting actions and followed on from them.
Got the commission from the Admiralty and picking up the Tomb colonist and some Mushroom Wine. Went up to Venderbight, delivered the Tomb colonist and got a commission from him, and sold the wine. Headed out west and taggled with some bats and got my ship beat up without finding anything. Was running very low on fuel so headed back, stopping at Hunter's Keep to visit the Sisters and go to tea. Then back to London, where I arrived burning my last unit of fuel. Turned in my 2 port reports. Talked to the Blind Bruiser and got fuel and supplies. Was lucky with the rats who fixed my ship for supplies. Headed out to the southeast and found the Shepherd Isles. Came back to London and my port report was disbelieved. Took an Unstamped Crate of Human Souls from the Blind Bruiser and headed northeast to find Mount Palmerston. Found Pigmote Island and favoured the Rats. Steamed around a lot but couldn't find Mount Palmerston. Eventually ran out of supples and lost crew. Fights with sea creatures eventually destroyed my ship.
After losing the ship to sea creature damage and drowning, with only the offer of playing as a rival to follow on, I decided to start another game. But I wanted to bring up my issues and see if I could get some advice.
I find Sunless Sea has a similar issue to a lot of games, both single player and online multiplayer, in that it's expected you'll have to repeat the same almost or actually fatal challenges over and over again to learn how to play the game. It goes beyond risk, in that it's a constant risk that's hard to judge and difficult to reduce or avoid when circumstances indicate you should.
I found money very tight all the time. I often considered not hiring the 2 officers I did because the 50 Echoes cost for each was a major fraction of my funds. Even if I hadn't hired them, my game didn't made their presence or that of 100 more Echoes something that would have changed the outcome.
I find the lack of information of where ports massively uncertain. I'm given a vague general direction but no indication how far. I used my zeebat continuously but it only helped when I got close. The only ports I found deliberately were Venderbight by following the coast and Hunter's Keep which I knew from YouTube videos was just off of London.
I think somewhere I read that the commision from the Blind Bruiser shouldn't be taken early considering the distance to Mount Palmerston. But I needed the fuel and supplies after my first voyage. And once I had the Unstamped Crate, I figured it was dangerous to return to London with it undelivered. But why is it offered so early without some indication the destination is distant and difficult?
I'd appreciate some advice here.

I posted a few days earlier here with a similarly Discouraged experience after my first zee-captain died. I persevered and am singularly glad I did, because a lot of the islands and stories in this game are straight-up amazing. I'll give you a few tips for the early game that worked for me:
1. Make your first few zee-voyages as LONG AS POSSIBLE. Go up to Venderbight, and then make a wide circle to the north and back around east, south, and then west back to Fallen London. Go as far east as possible. If you run into any islands where you can buy fuel and/or supplies, top yourself off. Exploration takes priority over money. Don't worry about terror too much; run with your lights off whenever possible; if a zee-beast or enemy vessel notices you, run away (using the F-key boost if necessary) unless you think you can win without taking much damage. Caution is important here.
Running with your lights off as much as possible will save you fuel and let you explore more, which will lead to boosts and treasures and help you when you need to go somewhere specific. Your terror will likely go above 50 and you'll earn some Nightmares, but these can be taken care of later and will even help you gain a story item. Generally speaking, the longer you can stay out in the early game, the more you'll come back with.
2. A lot of officers can be found for free at specific islands, so recruiting them is not a major priority. I'd maybe pick up or 1 or 2 at the start, but it shouldn't be all that necessary.
3. Get a Port Report EVERYWHERE POSSIBLE. These help out tremendously in the early game because not only do they replenish your Fuel, they give you a monetary bonus. This will be one of your main sources of income early on.
4. If you explored well in your first few outings, you should have no problem finding the destination for the Blind Bruiser's first shipment, and you'll get a nice reward when you come back. After that, it's mostly just a matter of managing your Fuel and Supplies intelligently.
Hope it helps. edited by Mukuro on 3/4/2015

There's a lot of room for different strategies, but you might try:
Basic starting strats:
Start as an urchin. Keep your crew between 7 and 9 inclusive when leaving London. Only use your lamp when absolutely necessary. 2 fuel : 1 supplies, at least at the start. Explore as much as possible. Avoid fights. Go NORTH (just like, not all the way). Find Mt. Palmerston. (No seriously, it's really useful even besides the Bruiser and Admiral's quests.) Find the Salt Lions (near-east or near-north-east). Use Salt's Attention (from Cynthia) at the Salt Lions. Carry Sphinxstone to London.
More in-depth and spoilery version: (Some of this has doubtlessly already been covered by other respondents.)
Note on Neathy Cartography: On your map, you may have noticed these reddish lines, and slightly different colours on either side of them. These lines mark the east-west boundaries between regions on the map. There are also unmarked north-south boundaries, and together these divide the map up into a 6x6 grid of 36 regions (well, technically "tiles").
The Ficklety of Zee-bats: Your zee-bat will usually only uncover major locations in your current region. As soon as you cross a region border (the flavour text pops up in your log), send out the bat, click the notification, and check your map. This saves you time wandering aimlessly around that region.
1) Urchin background. High Veils for avoiding monsters + immediate reward from Tomb Colonist. (Alternatively, Iron background for killing things faster--but you still don't want to tangle with anything with more than ~half your HP at the start.)
2) No more than 9 crew when leaving London. Ideally, no less than 7 crew either. This gives you some room to lose crew (or to accept them), while also consuming supplies at a much lower rate than 10 crew does.
3) Stock up on fuel and supplies, aiming for about 2 fuel for every 1 supplies. If you're feeling adventurous, buy wine and sell it in Venderbight. Then, hopefully use the echoes to buy fuel/supplies at Mt. Palmerston. Unless you run out before you find it.
4) On your first trip, do what Mukuro suggests. Stop off at the Keep for supplies, then sail north to Venderbight, drop off the colonist and pick up the First Curator's quest. Then continue north along the coast. There will be more ports there that you can gather reports from. Avoid the life-bergs.
5) Turn east from that other set of ports, and sail until you enter another region (flavour text will pop up in your log indicating this). There are four different regions that always spawn along the northern edge. Which one you encounter first, though, is random. One of the four possibilities is worthless. The other three are all varying degrees of useful, providing either the best Beginner's Luck choice and an item for the Curator, one of the best officers, or, well, Mt. Palmerston. If you want to be spoiled, the four possibilities are as follows:
I. Stormbones, containg the Ragged Crow. There are no ports. This region is useless, except for a few fragments from discovering the Crow and other named locations.
II. Void's Approach, containing two ports, the Chapel of Lights and the Avid Horizon. Get port reports from both, but beware! A deadly foe prowls these waters. The Avid Horizon is the best place to use your Beginner's Luck, and you can also get another item there if you have the Curator's quest.
III. Frostfound. Scary place. The men at the docks can help you a little bit with supplies, fuel, and terror, and it's also possible to pick up a very helpful officer here.
IV. Palmerston's Reach. This is where Mt. Palmerston is. If you have echoes to spare, you can buy both fuel and supplies here for reasonably good prices. This means that, actually, the further east this spawns the better for late-game explorations. But it also makes that first Bruiser quest more difficult.
6) Check your fuel/supplies/terror, but you should, hopefully, have enough to keep sailing east a bit, especially if the first region you found was Mt. Palmerston. Try to explore the next region and then reach the border of the one beyond that. At this point, unless the third region you discover (fourth from the western edge) is Palmerston's Reach, you should turn south and begin making your circle back to London. If you haven't had a chance to resupply, you'll need about half of the fuel you started with to make it. Your goal is to identify as many of the regions in the near-northeast (out to the third column, peeking at the fourth if you have the fuel) as possible, including, hopefully, the target of your Admiralty commission and the Salt Lions.
7) On return to London, accept the Bruiser's offer of supplies and fuel. Turn in all port reports. Use your port reports in the dry dock to get even more fuel. Buy any additional supplies you feel are necessary. DO NOT buy fuel. You'll buy it somewhere else shortly.
8) You've explored the north-east. Now it's time for the south-east. Sail directly south from London. After the second port (including Mutton Island), you can hug the western coast a bit until you reach the Republic. There, buy fuel as needed.
9) You can continue South, and discover a dangerous location, or you can sail almost directly south-east from the Republic. You'll eventually reach the Elder Continent, and Port Carnelian. There, you can restock on supplies if necessary, before setting out to explore the near-south-east (i.e. near to London). Again, you're looking for the target of the Admiralty's commission and the Salt Lions, if you haven't found them yet, or a giant mushroom, a giant face, or a fungal jungle. If you find the giant face you've lucked out. Land there and thoroughly explore the stories available, considering carefully the information you are given. Successfully completing the story gives a valuable reward.
10) Once your fuel gets low, head back to London. Hopefully, you've now fully explored the first three columns of the map, except maybe the two squares to the west and east of Port Carnelian (respectively dangerous, and empty and dangerous).
11) Turn in Port Reports etc. Don't turn in Strategic Information. Accept the Bruiser's mission. If you've found Mt. Palmerston, this should be cake. I personally would suggest doing his mission, and exploring further north and east than you did before, then returning to London, accepting the reward, and then...
12) Make sure you have at least 20 hold free (or will after using up a few barrels of fuel). Head to Hunter's Keep. Talk to Cynthia to get Salt's Attention. Head to the Salt Lions. Use Salt's Attention on the special story there. Use the reward money (the 200, NOT the 1000) the Bruiser gave you to buy a shipment of sphinxstone, and cart this back to London. Sell the Extraordinary Implication to the Scholar at the University, and sell the Sphinxstone in London. You can repeat this a few times before someone else shows up to meet your delivery.
