An agreement amongst seekers Messages in this topic - RSS

Bravo Mr. Kennedy. With an incredibly simple edition to this game you've managed to create both a fascinating scenario for game theorists and an attack that is more frightening and brutal than murder. Bravo.

The obvious strategy is obvious: wait until you have both a free attack and path to the third candle, then use both at once. You need to hope that the attack is successful enough to get the candle, but with the candle you will be immune to further attack (a particularly clever twist in the game, Mr. Kennedy). You must act fast, and you must act now. If you wait too long, you may be attacked, and if you wait very long there will be no one left to attack. They will all be out to zee, or they will already have their prize.

The counter-strategy is also obvious: when the people are given an opportunity for chaos, they can only avoid it through good governance. Government can be imposed from within or without. It hardly seems like an outside force will impose order, so we must do it ourselves.

I suggest an agreement amongst reasonable citizens of the Neath, even if we do happen to be damned: FOR WHOMEVER BETRAYS ONE OF US, A BETRAYAL WILL BE RETURNED TEN-FOLD. IGNORANCE OF THE AGREEMENT IS NO EXCUSE. Keep in mind that this is only the third candle. Likely there will be four more. Even if you are protected in the present, you will not be protected in the future.

Anyone who finds this agreement sensible should speak up. Any seekers who don't will be deemed untrustworthy, in this regard anyways. If you are part of this agreement and you are betrayed, then it will be all of our responsibilities to seek retribution.

Finally, with this agreement in hand we may achieve that which we seek in a civilized manner. No doubt some will want to rid themselves of their burden, and for those that do there will be a large number willing to pay, perhaps handsomely, for certain tokens.

Now, enjoy the hunt fellow seekers.

Edit:
The following is a list of those who have signed on to this agreement:

Alexander Feld, Allanon, Anstruther Barron, AwayMeBoys, an_ocelot, Blackleaf, Cochimetl, Corran, Danae, Delmar Tramontane, Dharlome, devoted_pupa, Doomlewa, dov, dragonridingsorceress, Emain Ablach, Esterhazy, Erik Vimes, Guy Scrum, HaapaPuu, Hamete, Harrison Snyde, helix, Jack Vaux-Harrowden, Jay Eclipse, Jeff Crowl, John Pennywise, Katherine Navane, Kerim, Lady Ciel, Lady Red, Little The, Maerion, Mac Trilby, Mr. Green, Nigel Overstreet, NinjaComedian, Philip Kaiser-Parlette, Spacemarine9, Tesuji, Urthdigger, WallofIllusion, xKiv, Zyxx

And for reference, the following is a list of high-level seekers whose intentions are either unclear or unscrupulous (provided by none other than Mr. Eaten itself):

amaresu, Asclepius Unbound, Baron Electricpants, Casidy, curious_fellow, Denubis Banere, Doctor Ezekiel Wright, elvortel, false_negative, FPF1987, garcia1000, garcia1000, imeja, Inpiun, Jacob Stadtfeld, James_Baker, Jarenth, Justin Tremont, kakkoi_hakujin, Keraslyn, Kisigar, Litha Braun, M_L_G, Mary Paine, mcruthless, Moomin, Mr_Slaves, Narcess, Nicholas Bjorge, piinstripeowl, Sean Harley, Septimus Hodge, Shadowhand, The Dave, Vyrlokar, Zmflavius

If you'd like to be moved from one list to the other, say so below and/or PM me.

A list of betrayers:

Petter Björklund (betrayed Lady Ciel, Katherine Navane, Corran, Blackleaf, Little The)
Jacob Kiner Elliott / Mr. Cheshire (betrayed lady ciel, Corran)
Howard John Abrahall (betrayed Jeff Crowl, Zyxx, Corran)
Justin Tremont (betrayed Allanon Kisigar)
bjorntfh (betrayed Doomlewa)
Zmflavius (betrayed Esterhazy, Allanon Kisigar)
RayDNoper (betrayed Jeff Crowl, Harrison Snyde)
Dolan (betrayed Urthdigger, Anstruther Barron, Kerim. Dolan has been very successful in the game of knife and candle, and may have many tokens. If you can find him, I highly recommend using an enigma. Furthermore, Dolan used his betrayal to get a second waxwail knife. Bad form Dolan.)
Nicholas Bjorge (betrayed an_ocelot)
Denubis Banere (betrayed Devoted_pupa)
curious_fellow (betrayed Allanon Kisigar)
Jacob Stadtfeld (betrayed Hamete, Devoted_pupa)
Shadowhand (betrayed an_ocelot, Devoted_pupa. Likely aligned with another betrayer.)
Inpiun (betrayed Tesuji, Anstruther Barron, Harrison Snyde, Allanon Kisigar)
William Dawson III / You Millions (betrayed Guy Scrum, later made amends)

If you see a betrayer, stab him/her/it. I'll keep the most recent or most egregious betrayers at the top of this list, so focus your stabbing and stealing powers there. Don't forget to let them know why they're being stabbed. They may try to seek forgiveness from the one they betrayed and remove themselves from this list, but that is at the betrayed's discretion.

Further edits:
A new line of attack is open as of November 23, 2013. I am extending this agreement to cover that attack as well. If you strongly disagree with this extension, let it be known and I will gladly remove you from the list (although you will thereafter be marked as a deserter). If many disagree with this extension, I will abandon it and rethink my methods. I would like to keep some semblance of democracy, after all.

An emptiness has provided us (how can an emptiness provide?) with the following list of names:

Cerise's Candle. A few days ago I thought I'd never get it. I've never been so happy to be betrayed. Getting back at the guy got me 40 more than I started with. That what he gets for taking what's mine. But finally, I have the candle.

Muaahahahaha! The foolish attempts of amaresu and Justin Tremont to take the betrayers metal from me are vain and bring them only ruin, for the candle, the candle, the candle of St Cerise lies in my hands, and I am ever closer to damnation!

  • Well, congratulations on the candle, after stealing from me those 21 tokens just now!

Actually, I *was* pretty annoyed by this, but then I figured that this way at least someone is making good use of all those tokens.

I've never signed on to this pact just because I saw no reason not to lay low. But I have never planned to steal anything from another Seeker - it's just not the right RP for my character. I'm Seeking because, once I've hit the game's content boundary, it is the only interesting content pursuit left for me in London (not whining about the amount of new content - I know how much effort it takes to create this).

So basically, I'm waiting for a non-K&C way to get the 3rd candle, or alternatively, for a whole lot of new prize tokens to be injected into the system to allow for the slow process of getting them one at a time.

For what it's worth, count me in on this pact from now on.

    And, seriously, congratulations Allanon Kisigar.

Oh dear... seems we have quite the epidemic. I'd try to avenge you all myself, but I am both busy and unqualified. Apologies.

Well... perhaps there is something I can do. Are you reading this, Mr Björklund? We may be betrayers, but we are betrayers with honor. Without the aegis of honor and fellowship, we have no reason to help eachother, say, by passing along a certain card of exceptional importance. Be warned.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

I was honestly surprised to get them, given how long it was since you announced it. On the plus side, I now have St. Cerise's Candle, with Little The's donation being the only theft I made. See, it IS possible to get the candle without being a dick. Well... not a TOTAL dick anyway. I did take advantage of a few things to make myself extra "prickly" and able to hit folks back harder than they hit me.

Now that I don't have to worry so much about staying at Elusive 150, I'm going to see if I can work on the mystery of the lady handing out prize tokens. Maybe experiment with other aspects of K&C I ignored to focus on farming tokens.

Well, since I don't have to worry about folks taking advantage of loopholes in my plan, I can reveal it. Yes, I took advantage of exotica items. It took me quite some time to do, but I found that if you remove all exotica items from your inventory, the exotica cards come up quite often. This does have the side effect of polarizing your results. While my Elusive attacks had pretty much a 100% success rate, at the same time attacks against me (Primarily baroque, with the occasional savage) were almost assured. Although, I wager if I'd gone a while longer, my baroque would have approached the average of folks who were attacking me. Due to that, I'd say to do this for savage or elusive.

Compelled to make this as victimless as possible, I used my huge list of social contacts (Ironically the same thing that made it borderline impossible to proceed early on due to getting stabbed way too often) to find folks who had abandoned the game by sending them helpful social actions (Mostly second chance stuff) and marking the ones who never accepted after a month. Those were the only individuals I "farmed". To discourage folks from attacking me, I'd retaliate until they lost more than they gained (So, typically just one more attack than they gave me). I'd use my messages to try and make it clear I'm not going on a war path, and that if they leave me alone I will not go after them. Most got the hint.

Also, it helps to be antisocial to do this. I dropped out of the game for a while due to frustration with K&C, and hatched this plan upon my return. While I did eventually return to the forums, I tried not to tell too many folks I was still working on K&C, and tried to mention quite a few times how I felt Cerise's was currently impossible. The less people thought I was collecting tokens, the better. That is another reason to target long-forgotten accounts: They tell no tales.

I managed to acquire 34 tokens on my own, with Little The supplying the final 10 and some change. I'm not gonna lie, it took months to do that. Also, while the new prize tokens going out is hopeful, it seems to be tied to a living story... so currently away players won't be getting more. Hence the research. I'm sure if we can find the trick to generating tokens, those of us who no longer need the candle can help those who do. After all, my plan DID leave me with some major loopholes one can exploit for an easy win...

As one who has been betrayed, and betrayed another in turn (sorry Nigel) - and found both experiences unpleasant, in their own fashion - is it too late to join this pact?

Also: I believe an Inquisitive band have made their own pact of non-aggression.

A radical proposal: why not nominate our own candidate, an Alpha Seeker who will continue? We could negotiate an orderly flow of tokens to a suitable candidate, rather than the current cut-throat melee. It would be entirely counter to the spirit of the Quest, an assertion of humanity in the face of inhuman forces. It could be marvellous.

A brotherhood of the Empty Faith? Seekers--we most inhuman and perverse of Fallen London's monsters--banding together in fellowship?

Humanity, I love you! You never cease to amaze. Count me in, most gladly, and I'd certainly be interested in coordinated cleverness to evade the cap.

To which end, I must point out: the Order of the Wistful Rose, Third to First class, provide a total of 18 extra Knife Tokens. If Unfettered is worth at least nine--presumably the case, as First was worth ten--it is possible to attain the Candle without Waxwail Knives, on two conditions: first, that the Order's gifts are not subject to the cap (which I had thought was the case, but cannot confirm) and second, that *no award* be sought until the cap is reached. Alas, I took the Rose First Class well before I reached the cap, and will therefore need a Waxwail Knife to gain the Candle, but if a member of this group were willing to accept repeated knifings to allow others to inflate their winning streaks, we might be able to provide a leg up towards the Candle in an orderly and civil fashion.

To clarify, the following were my original intentions:
    • If you're not part of the agreement and you betray someone else not part of the agreement, then good for you.
    • If you're not part of the agreement and you betray someone who is part of the agreement, then you will face our retribution. You may seek forgiveness from the one you betrayed and get off of the black list.
    • If you're part of the agreement and you betray someone who is part of the agreement, then you will be kicked out of the agreement and face our retribution. You may still seek forgiveness, but since you effectively betrayed everyone involved, you'll need to have a large number of apologies accepted. This does not seem likely to happen.
    • If you're part of the agreement and you betray someone who is not part of the agreement, then that is allowed but quite foolish. If someone seeks revenge against you for your betrayal, then that revenge would not be a betrayal in itself and thus would not be protected by this agreement. Also, since I assume that we don't want to devolve into a terrible war between alliances, we'll be much more careful about protecting you against further attack. This last statement is not codified, but it is human/mollusk/ocelot nature to be cautious (actually I don't know about mollusks, are they cautious?).

I'm not going to change anything on the first post to reflect these clarifications — a changing agreement isn't much of any agreement at all — but these are the rules that I, and I imagine many others, will be following.

And Erik, I am keeping an up to date list on the first page.

out of the 67 or so names listed in the first post, there's 29 in the pact. which is nearly 45%. it's not /terrible/ numbers, i guess.

besides, where else are the tokens going to come from but outside forces >:]
not that i'm entirely advocating candling outside the pact, but someone's gotta get tokens somewhere if we're ever going to see the candle.

with that sort of system you could set up a dozen sockpuppet accounts, enter the game straight away and set them all lying in ambush so you could just wreck someone instantly the second they poked their head out of cover
    which'd suck a lot, really!

It is my hope and maybe my only inspiration for this place that the betrayers never get North. I will stand vigilant to not let it happen.

Alexis, if you read this, consider me Sanson and them the philistines. If you give me some hair and a temple above them, consider them crushed.

Am I right in suspecting the betrayer list is becoming too large to be manageable? It seems a searing enigma is a bit too expensive to just be throwing around to punish someone unless they just stole your prize tokens and you want to get them back.

I don't really think so Uniden. Zmflavius is the only one that seems to be leaving himself open to attack, and he's already been attacked a good deal more than he has attacked any of us, so you don't really need to focus your enigmas on him. If anyone else pops up though, an enigma will probably net you a lot of tokens.

Somehow you're like a betrayal magnet, Devoted_pupa. At least you're helping us know who we can trust.

Just lost 40 tokens courtesy of RayDNoper, I was so close, but this betrayal has cost me everything. This will probably mark the end of my search, it has come at too great a cost

I stole 34 prize tokens from John Howard Abrahall, but he got them back before I could flee to Zee. Fie and poxes!

Yeah, I have to say one issue with putting myself out there so much on the forums is that I get attacked a lot. And swarmed with more confessions than I can grant. And enough with that blasted reporter!

If you go for rare successes, converting Broken Giant to Cellars of Wine is also an option.

Underestimate? Where in the world would you get that idea?

All I'm saying is, running to a thread and going 'Help! Mr Eaten's going to eat us all!' is bringing it directly to his attention. If you don't want the thread to get consumed, it is probably not a good idea to do this.

On topic - I'm still not at the point where I can effectively join this pact, but I am Seeking, now, and I'm a decent ways into it.

Don't apologize; just consider things carefully before you post, in the future.

I'm unsure if Alexis would approve of that. He did express unhappiness with people creating alts to gang up on a single user. Having a coordinated attack by a group of people isn't the same in principle, but it's similar. Also, raising wounds wouldn't necessarily be that much of a punishment. We're all Seekers here; we've all died plenty of times before. The goal here for punishment is to take back their spoils - K&C items, prize tokens. Which, yes, the repeated stabbing would account for.

God I wish I wasn't unassailable. I'd betray each and every one of you. This is seeking. This is the point. NONE OF YOU ARE WORTH AS MUCH AS THE NAME.

But what if the name betrays you? What if the seven candles tip over and burn down your house? WHAT WILL YOU DO THEN?

Same goes for Sparring,Loitering,Suppers and Games of chess! Sure I'll accept them occasionaly but I wont help you grind them most of the time.
But calling cards are highly welcome! (Got too much influence for cards at the moment. Sorry!)
