Howdy folks!
I've spent a lot of time recently going through the StoryNexus worlds listed on the directory, and I figured I would share a piece of advice.
The first challenges a player encounters should be easy. More than that: they should look easy. The best thing you can do for curbside appeal is to set your early challenges to whatever difficulty gives players at least a 65% chance of success with their starting BasicAbilities or major stats. This accomplishes two things:
(1) It empowers players. They won't feel like they're fighting an uphill battle against the odds. You can throw harder branches at them later, but early on, your goal is to get players to stick around and engage the world.
(2) It ensures the difficulty reads as Modest. It's intimidating to come into a world and see that everything is Chancy (or Very Chancy, or Tough...) Modest difficulty is much more approachable -- and approachable is easier to engage.
