How do you get it unfairly then?
My failures so far - lost favourable circumstances gained from advent calendar to a bug. Lost an unsigned message card due to a bug. Yeah, bugs, they love me so much.

As far as I know by elusive stealing from someone who has one.
Though I think at one point SMEN players could steal each others tokens in order to get a knife which they needed to progress that storyline. edited by circe on 1/3/2014

By fair, I meant getting it in a manner that did not involve mining my alts and jumping the rest of the distance with 8 points of Notability.

The first time I tried to rob the Bazaar, I saw that it was a modest challenge and said to myself, "What's the worst that could happen?" "You've gained a new Quality: Nightmares - at 8!" Considering I'm very protective of my dream qualities and this may have been back when getting out of the State of Some Confusion cost all of one's dream quality, I was highly alarmed. But I did have some Honeyed Laudanum on hand, and once I succeeded in robbing the Bazaar I found I liked the failure text quite a lot more! Still. After that experience, I resolved never to ask myself what the worst that can happen in this game is.
Also, I don't regret pursuing the SMEN storyline (so many fun things to know! So much self-destruction to be pursued!), but I greatly regret what it does to my character's story. Especially the soul-staining. That has enormously damaged Avis's sense of self-worth.

I was happily running through my usual task of clearing my hand of all cards, when I popped into my rooms at the Brass Embassy to ask about the soulless, only to forget about the current offers and accidentally selling my own soul for the price of a bucket of snow. D__n misclicks.
Oh well. At least it will give me something to do.

Distraught! I have lost my bugged second destiny. Now I shall have to make do with only having Backstage, and no Road at all.
On the other hand, that was balanced out by finally acquiring Premises at the Bazaar.

My greatest failure in Fallen London was when I tried to get the puzzling map. I lost so many high level items and ended up with nothing. I was out about 35 echoes before I gave up trying.

OK, the only thing in FL that's made me want to post here really: just lost 3 consecutive Tears on their first huff each. Which, OK, 900 Echoes up in smoke. ok. BUT this was just after (i) the unexpected 6 lacre Noman cost had taken me to zero lacre, and then (ii) I used my last pail to get to 3, needing to get to I believe 8 for the last 5-card lodging (the sanctum). So now I'm at 7 and stuck there :-(.

Ugh, after spending a week trying to get both the curate and his "sister" to bed, I started to put it off and started on Archaeology instead. However, studying the correspondence stones, then deciding that I'm finished studying them removed ALL of my "Investigating" quality, and the curate literally disappeared from my map.
Pretty certain this is a bug. Hope support can help me here...

It's not a bug, it's just a consequence of how progress qualities work. Try lowering your Persuasive to see if the Melancholy Curate options show up again, or failing that just raise Investigating back up to 18 using the Stones again.

Apparently not my week on luck checks: just spent 20 actions and 20 Confident Smiles trying to succeed at the Nadir's insane Persuasive check. 14% chance at Persuasive 247, so actually that's only a little less than a 5% chance; not so unlikely, albeit mildly irritating .
Edited to add: OK, Irritation is increasing (+3 cp). Just *repeated* this with the same results! Used up 21 more Confident Smiles (all I had), 21 more actions, and still failed. The chance of *that* is around 1 in 500. #fifthcityproblems edited by Ewan C. on 1/16/2014

And now I am hurting. Jumped on the new lacre access code, applied every booster I had to get my dangerous to +39 and made feeding the lacre to the boar a 55% chance, threw a hard-earned lesson at it....
Whiff. Back to waiting for the damned urchins to show up...

At the moment I've been having a string of bad luck. I keep trying to chat up priests for candles and to boost up my Persuasive so I can become a Legendary Charisma. I'm at 160+ meaning it happens to be straightforward. But as of late I've been getting nothing but devious reporters in disguise who have been slandering my good name! The lies they printed on the papers. Do not believe a word an article says if it involves me, a Sly Cleric and a bucket, friends.

75 Incunabulae made 9 enigmas I was hoping to get an Impossible Theorem soonish, but this sets me back; I used echoes to buy cryptic clues for those enigmas.
Still, another, perhaps, 6 weeks and I believe I will have an Impossible Theorem, a Fluke Core, and a vial of Master's Blood.

I know one is supposed to play the long game with the Fidgeting Writer, but AAAaaaaaaaaargh! I've spent a few days burning through rather a large amount of Tales - initially I was seeking a Coruscating Soul, but when I started to feel my luck wasn't in I resolved to cash out at the Lens of Black Glass Stage. Then the Last Hope stage. etc. etc. So far I have one Lens and one Last Hope to show for my efforts. I seem to have failed my last 30 or so Room at the Beths. Annoying.

When you're posting or editing, go into HTML mode and delete all the "li" tags. That'll get rid of them.
