I fear I am still quite new in this city, and I'm still trying to get my feet under me.. as in, I've yet to hit 20 in any stat (favoring Watchful a tad, but generally going for the balanced approach). I've found plenty of things to do, but it seems they all pay out in... well, all SORTS of things that would scarce fit in my wallet. Secrets, dead rats, bottles of wine, golden rings and pearls... all of which seem to have clear purposes above and beyond being sold for pennies.
I'm not looking to make a fortune... yet. I merely wish I had a handful of Echoes so that I could buy a handsome pair of gloves, or perhaps a charming urchin. Are there any opportunities to grind out a bit of money in those early days? Or anything I can safely sell because it has no other purpose or is available in far greater quantities than needed?
Ah, needless to say, I already sold the diamond I so cleverly concealed in my shoes - that little windfall was enough to buy myself a decent suit and a dagger for necessary self-defense, but scarce more. Hardly a repeatable performance, either, despite my shoe-size. edited by BlakeTheDrake on 2/25/2015

So - keep the wine and sell the gold, keep the wine and sell the pearls? Sounds like the refrain of a rousing zee-zhanty...
Anyway, thanks for the advice - I managed to earn a couple of echoes selling spare Rostygold, AFTER spending a healthy chunk on a bed in a flophouse... ^_^
EDIT: It seems a generous gentleman (no doubt of fine breeding) took pity on my plight, and gave me a heavy sack of First City coins. Might I assume that these are fairly safe to sell? Going by the wiki, all I'll need is 7 for a collection of oddities, unless I'm pursuing my Heart's Desire. edited by BlakeTheDrake on 2/25/2015

The only real use is for sending them, like transferable echoes, to players, and for heart's desire. you can sell them safely.
once you do, buy cheap equipment that give +1 buffs for low prices, since that's cheap and easy to get. also, if you have money to spare, buy a sulky bat- it adds a card to your deck that is quite lucrative at this point in the game (it either gives connected:the great game, or 3 scrap, and one scrap is generally valued at half an echo each, though most players tend to hoard their scrap, since vast quantities can get items nothing else can offer. [3200 scrap offers absurdly valuable collectibles, ones which sell for ~1500 echoes, and you never know when you might want one of those rarities] if you're really lucky, it'll even bring back another bat, of a different sort, which you would do well to sell to the bazaar, for 12.5 echoes. despite what the card implies, you are in no danger of losing your bat by letting it go flying.) edited by Grenem on 2/25/2015 edited by Grenem on 2/26/2015
