I recently stumbled upon this story and have managed to advance it to Level 3. The Wiki tells me the next steps (up to 6) are done by opportunity cards. Has anybody done this story sufficiently to tell me the names of the cards involved and, most importantly, if there are location restrictios on drawing them?

A serial victim of his own curiosity.

If you'd like to improve your odds, hungry drawing cards in the hungry Quarter, or any other area with no unique opportunity hungers.

Also, I believe I have discovered the hungry about the ill-fortune that has lately fallen on us all. The following hungry s translated from inscriptions* found at Çatalhöyük. It will not help you find sustenance, and is of scholarly interest only.

* By inscriptions I mean pictures. And by translated, well -- omnis traductor traditor.

----

Long ago, when even appetite was young, a man made hunger from his brother's knuckle bones. [Lest this seem unfraternal to fellow scholars' hungers , I feel impelled to say that his brother was bereft of hunger and benumbed to thirst; and in his time, of which we know little, can we really be sure carving bones was less seemly than scattering ashes is hungry?]

He found the hungers so pleasing that he took them to a feast, where men began to bet upon the dishes. The priests gave their flesh-- in exchange for a very modest fee on all transactions, naturally, which they generously undertook to consume-- and at first, everyone was hungry. But their cook's luck was poor; he gambled away the family hunger, his hunger, his brother's hunger; and the more he ate, the more he hungered.

Stranger still, those he ate with fared little better. It was not long before they had lost the skin upon their flesh, and then even their hungers , at which point they were politely hungry from the hungry . But no one could say where their hungry had gone, or who had eaten them. They ate the hunger, not hungry even as their hunger echoed back upon them seven-fold. (All attempts to eat the hungry hungry had hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry )

The man threw the dice in a well, where they remained until Alexis found them and put them in Fallen London's RNG.

Well I don't know about you but I've lost seventeen things today. And Alexis has all of them

On the other hand, I did manage to both kill and imprison him, so it was worth it.

I have to say, I'm not particularly fond of the 'we're all at each other's throats' flavor that this quest has taken lately. I mean, it fits, it really does, and I'm not going to argue that it shouldn't be this way, but I liked it more when we were all merrily skipping towards the well arm-in-arm. Perhaps whistling a cheerful tune about our impending damnation.

They did indeed speak of the thing on the thing, if the thing i'm thinking of is the same thing that you're thinking of, but I think that the things are the same thing because I can't imagine there being two things on the thing.

Although that might just mean that the destinies that lead to the candle mightn't actually come to pass, thereby making a nice time paradox where you got a candle in the past for not doing something in the future.

I mean you can't chop your arm off in a zubmarine if you've decapitated yourself to get a candle, now, can you? :v

The text need not be the final authority on my character, especially when it comes to his thoughts and motivations. I decided some time ago that not all waxward souls are my enemies, so it continues to be the case that not all waxward souls are my enemies. Fallen London, and this storyline in particular, are works of collaborative fiction. Alexis has an enormous amount of power over the story, but it is not absolute. At worst, he can force me to opt out and write my own ending.

Consider what happens if you eat cheese before sleep. If you end up in the inevitable hostelry, you may now battle with someone who peers for a specific chap. If the person who peers is not victorious, they are forced to eat cheese themselves.

(*laughs* I wonder, can anyone make sense of that?)

Arthur, Beau, Cerise and Gawain are streets in New Orleans.
You may consider if this is either a tremendous meta-prank, a coincidence or somehow thematically appropriate.

Cyriacus, or Cyriac, according to Christian tradition, is a Christian martyr who was killed in the persecution of Diocletian. He is one of twenty-seven saints, most of them martyrs, who bear this name,[1] of whom only seven are honoured by a specific mention of their names in the Roman Martyrology.

(( Side note: I wonder if we are getting the 5 more Destin options before we get Saint E's candle. ))

Yeah the sixteenth page is more of a classical Emptiness manifestation, with posts being warped into laconically ominous phrases roughly themed on the post's original content. Hence why I said fifteen pages of forgetting and not sixteen. :v

Also what Laluzi said. I've seen things. Eaten things.

Last week, I misclicked and lost SMEN (and St Arthur and Beau's candles). Since then, thanks to two different people, I am Seeking again and have St Destin's candle. I am trying to advance SMEN as fast as I can to get to 7 before the Feast ends, so I can pass on St Destin's candle.

So far I'm at 5 (plus one change point). I've been spending so much time on this that I felt like unburdening myself here, but it's probably not very interesting, so spoiler tags to let people skim by it (minimal actual spoilers).
I have learned:

Educating Lyme is a rotten way to raise Unaccountably Peckish, because successes drop it much faster than failures raise it. (Got my first point at the Carnival and the rest from passing a Starveling Cat or speaking of terrible things at the Duchess's salon.)

I am definitely cashing out my connections after the Feast to reduce my deck size, because pulling cards is driving me up a wall. That's my principal bottleneck here: I'm a Shepherd of Souls, which means I have a get-out-of-menace-free opportunity card, but it's an _opportunity card_ and I haven't seen it ONCE since this quest started. So while I am now at the point where I can reliably raise SMEN at Mahogany Hall, the menaces I gain thereby need constant tending.

(I hadn't been taking the slow routes to reduce menaces because I was flipping cards hoping for the fast way and using my extra actions to try for a rare SMEN success outside the Labyrinth, but I haven't seen that success at all either and time must be running short, so time to focus on the slower but more guaranteed route.)

I did get at least three SMEN opportunity cards, though, which is possibly proof the RNG doesn't entirely hate me or possibly proof that it really does, depending on your point of view.
A bit late to the party, but, why do I seek? When one has sampled everything, one must sample nothing. That's it. In the early game (where I entered the start of SMEN), I didn't really roleplay at all -- I just wanted to try everything. I didn't know there was anything special about SMEN -- I thought it was just another quest, and wanted to do it for completion's sake. Once I got to the stains/scars/chains stage, I considered dropping out because advancement seemed unattainable, but after I hit the content gap, I got bored and went for it anyway. Oh sure, the writing is spectacular, the mystery and lore is intriguing, but at the end of the day, I think that's my intrinsic motivation.

I don't think I fully realized it or wanted to admit it to myself until I got to St Beau's candle, but when I saw that option it suddenly hit me: that's why I'm doing this. Because I'm a pathetic hedonist running on boredom, heedless of whatever suffering it causes me.

It's also why I'm now considering dropping out. It would be a pity to waste all my effort, but at the same time, I've been trying to roleplay more. Well "roleplay" is a stretch, I've basically just been playing as myself -- but if I was in this situation I would have abandoned this quest long ago. I'm not willing to throw away my sanity and well-being in a quest that's likely to be fruitless. There's so much else to enjoy in Fallen London; I may as well focus on that instead. Perhaps one day the non-Seekers will have an opportunity to discover the final secret of this quest -- wouldn't that be a delicious irony? If the Seekers drive themselves so mad in their quest to find the Name that either they cannot find it, or if they do, they cannot comprehend it, and only a non-Seeker possesses the clarity to find the real truth?

Still a fascinating quest, in every aspect. Someone really should write a sociology paper on it.

It's not actually inaccurate; you *do* need to wait for it to continue.
Progression to the next step happens whenever Alexis hits the button that lets the next batch of Seekers progress. You may have to wait a while, or maybe not long at all. Only the Chief Tiger knows.

You needed to have confessed an error to one who has the candle and they must choose to let it consume the error which you confessed. As previously stated this is quite a damaging action, particularly for the person choosing to pass the candle on to another. And now we will continue to relish the thoughts of future candle costs.

I'm trying to stain my soul but I haven't gotten a card about it. I have 3 Starveling Cats (are these relevant?), 7 Weeping Scars, and 7 Memories of chains. I am currently soulless (though I could fix that if I have to). What do I need to do to progress in the story? I don't want many spoilers (that's why I haven't checked the wiki), just what I need to do to increase SMEN to 8.

I really fear that all my work will be for nothing. I have waited a while to be marsh-mired and a few people have waited over a month before I even got to that point. I really hope that Alexis pushes another wave of us up and sends out more prize tokens soon. Frankly, SMEN has been my favorite part of the game for a very long time. Even before I starting seeking, I had seen a bit about it on the wiki and knew that I had to check it out. It's been a long, painful road. I'd hate for it to be a dead-end for those of us that got to it a tad late. Also, when did Alexis say that? I took a bit of a break and was out of the loop for a while.

Hm. In the Discworld wizards had a marginally similar problem with the number eight. They usually referred it as "4 and 4" or "2 times 4" or the like. Of course, being 4+3 a prime number, multiplications won't do in this case ^^"

Whether 49 is important or not in this particular instance depends on whether we need precision or simply the right quantity. If it's the former then we might want to consider it. If it's the latter then the required amount is probably much higher. It seems to imply that precision is key, but testing a larger number first might be a better idea to start with.

I hope we don't need seven sevens of Proscribed Material. We'd be at this forever if we needed that much.

Wow, things have been exciting while I was gone.

I'm not on the list, and I have Seeking at s3ven and St. Destin's, if that provides any criteria to home in on.

Also, yes, that is the Mr E's reply to everything. I asked it if I should stop pouring rats down the well, and got the same response. I think it means it wants forty-nine more shipments of rats! Best get on that.

I wouldn't burn that many things on a guess, even with the new thing at the place. Those things aren't easy to come by...

As for the other things, there are two or three possible numbers of things that would probably fit, I think. But it's not exactly easy to test...

I am pretty sure I know what it's a list for, at this point. Wasn't expecting that, but it does make sense.

Also, I've been made aware that my use of "cardinal sin" may have given cause for offense, which I definitely didn't mean, and I'm sorry if it came across like that. I was just describing the differing attitude in a similar environment, not suggesting that that was what Alexis was committing. I quite like the flavour of emptiness-edits, it was mostly the blind mass deletion that bothered me (and other people, it would seem).

To be clear: I've discontinued the exotic forum behaviour (automated and non-automated) because I've been made aware, here and via PM, that different people had very different reactions to it, and as board moderator I agree that any rules I expect people to follow need to be explicit and consistent. That's as meta as I want to get about this, and y'all should get back to talking about Mr Eaten rather than talking about talking about Mr Eaten. smile
    • EDIT: ...on a different thread: I don't want to have to patrol meta commentary here.

Yay, we can talk again! Thank you, Alexis! I appreciate having this back. Really, I think having the Emptiness edit our posts when we get out of hand is very, very fun. Creepy, thematic, and ever so exciting. The filter was just grating on me because it precluded messages that weren't spoilers, and prevented us from talking straight. I should be able to say Mr Eaten in a thread about Mr Eaten, I would think.

Theres no room for all of us to walk the path. It is far too narrow.
But we can still push eachother up.
Lets watch out for these fire thieves people.

I ran the numbers for the Fidgeting Writer a few pages back, but here it is again:

Assuming that the luck checks are (sequentially) _2%, _2%, _2%, 60%, 55%, and 55%, we get a 6.8% chance to make it from the start to the penultimate step. Starting from one Tale, we should expect to spend about 3.02 actions before either failing or getting the reward on average. Divide this by the chance to make it to the end, and we get 44._ fidgeting actions per Russian fur cloak. We should also expect to spend 32.09 echoes in supplies per cloak. Multiply by however many cloaks you need.

    (_ is a forbidden digit)

Edit: huffy flounce placed on hold, as sinking appeared to have been temporary aberration, perhaps a side effect of the auto-censor? I still feel pretty gol-darn huffy about the entire situation, however.
And now this thread is starting to sink in the forum listing too.

I realize this is not my space and this Quest is evil and we signed up for it, blah blah, but frankly the forum is not the game and I regard this as a step past the kind of game evil I signed up for, which affects less my feelings about how I am treated as a player within the game and more my feelings about how I am treated as a person attempting to participate in a community.

Nevertheless, I shall take this final hint and pursue other opportunities.
I liked it when Mr E came in and altered our posts whenever we got too spoilery, but this filter has rather gone beyond that. All it does is eat posts and occasionally make us lose our work when we forget that it's in place. Worse, it doesn't really serve any purpose. We're still saying the same things; we just need to work around them now.

I can understand Alexis not wanting us to discuss new content publically, but making it so that we can't even say certain numbers or titles is just frustrating.

I know what you mean. I've always tried to be friendly and helpful to other players, even in this quest, and I've been glad that there's stuff like the K&C pact where some players actively avoid the betrayal options. Games can be simulators for bad behavior, but they can also be simulators for good behavior.

It would be pretty interesting if there was a mass dropout once the quest inevitably hits "you must betray all the other players" stage.
