UPDATE: The Lady in Lilac is abroad. Find her in your opportunity deck to surrender rose-gifts and increase your Masquing quality, which will open more opportunities later...
Love is kind, except when it's cruel. At this time of year, Fallen Londoners send unexpected gifts to each other. Kind gifts, cruel gifts, and those that are both.
This year we're pleased to offer you two new gifts:
A Blemmigan Pedant! (Complete with pince-nez) An Illicit Volume of Unexpectedly Racy Fungal-Themed Poetry! (It's all the rage!)
and two new companions for the season:
The Nacreous Survivor. An outcast even among outcasts. The Cat's Chiefest Claw. Sharp, dangerous, ambiguously-gendered.
Join the Feast, watch the crowds, or send something special to someone special. Or someone special to something special.
Make new contacts here for the exchange of rose-gifts, find new friends in these various places:

Greetings all you delicious people,
OOC: My questions pretty much are - how do you safely trade with people? (as i intend to trade fate/nex items this is paramount) - when can you start to use masquing for companions? (timeframe for the event) - Can you acquire multiple companions or are you locked at one a year? edited by Malachai Blackbriar on 2/13/2015
Hello,
Just throw teeth'n tongues around at people who don't hide fast enough. Then wait and see. Something mostly happens.
...
nah. Seriously:
- for trading fate gifts it is generally accepted etiquette to talk about it beforehand. Either in the game, the forum or the IRC channel. The latter might actually be the fastest way.
- Regarding 'safely', there is no mechanism in place to act as trade insurance... so it's just you, them, and a handshake. Although I've *never* heard of anyone cheating on that. Just for completeness.
- This thing should go for two weeks, til the end of February, during which you can (and will) draw a card which will allow you to spend your Masquing on companions, provided you have Masquing...
- ... and you can probably not get as many as you want, but as many as you can. There be no limits.
... and if you would kindly excuse me now, I have to go back to painting some cats.

We've just removed the Fate lock from Lilac -- the story no longer awards one Fate, or requires it later.
The reason it worked that way to begin with was to signal that we'd rather this content didn't get mapped out on the wikis. We still don't want that to happen, but now it falls under the general policy about conversational content -- and the Fate-lock was a little unwieldy and confusing.

I am always amazed, given how most characters behave in the game, how generous and social and helpful their players are to their peers. i mean that in the best possible way, of course. So I presume the Feast is now over? I must say I quite enjoy this season. To be honest, the gift-swapping mechanic reminds me more of Christmas than Valentine's Day, and I am repeatedly astounded by peoples' generosity. It's amazing how so many people are willing to reciprocate with such expensive gifts at no benefit to themselves, and how many are understanding if you do not. It's sometimes nice to take a break from hoarding items and just throw it all away on warm fuzzies.
I'm glad Fallen London has such a positive community. I hope the next Feast will be excellent as well!

Are you interested in starting what is sure to be a magnificent collection of colored cats? If your answer is yes, then you can be the proud owner of not one, not two, but five pink felines for the low price of ten masquing worth of romantic knick knacks. If you're the first Londoner to send a letter or calling card to the address below, we'll even throw in a jar of teeth absolutely free of charge. You'll be the envy of all as you sit surrounded on all sides by unnaturally colored cats, slowly rocking back and forth and clutching a jar full to the brim of actual teeth pried from real human mouths in your trembling hands. What are you waiting for? The you you've always wanted to be, a you with slightly more material wealth, is within reach thanks to the magic of capitalism and the general lack of regulation that accompanies abduction by space bats.
Oh Gods Why? Inc. is not liable for any damages that may occur to person or property. You knew what you were getting into when you agreed to receive what is literally a jar of human body parts.™

I'd just like to mention that the occasional visitor neglects to include their profile link, which makes it nigh on impossible to send gifts or otherwise. I'd love to divulge the multitude of possibilities inherent in owning a glass of teeth (as requested in one post), but if you don't leave a return address...
Anyway, I have a generous pile of singed cards and a massive mound of molars, if anyone is feeling unloved so far in this Feast. Personal messages are always smiled upon.

Who among you is interested in acquiring a mask of the finest weasel skin, and most certainly not the tanned face of a vagrant? Well, today is your lucky day friend. This 100% legal piece of merchandise can be yours for just one string of gold-plated, weaponized prayer beads. What would you honestly rather have: religious iconography coated in precious metal, or a face- a mask that whispers bloodstained accusations while you sleep? If you order now, we'll even add one of our many pink cats free of charge. They've been taking up/over quite a bit of warehouse space, and none of the last three employees we sent in to check on them have returned, so we've really got to start thinning out their ranks. Should you be interested in a bit of capitalism, just send a letter or calling card to the address below. We look forwards to doing business with you. edited by Simus on 2/15/2015

So, if I'm hoping to get two companions that require 40 masquing each, is the best route to get 20 through the opportunity card, then 10 through the gifts, and finally use a 10 Fate item to get to 40?
If that's the case, I'm very interested in exchanging some 10 Fate gifts!

Last year there was an option on Lilac's card to start the storyline that leads to you getting a tattoo. You'll need 10 in Clathermont's Family to play that option - the final part of the story is in Wilmot's End.

Well, I believe that you can get to 31 by reaching 29 and then surrendering either a buttered chess piece or a pink painted cat, which give two points of Masquing.
Beyond that, you need Fate gifts.

Are the inter-player actions needed to finish the feast of the roses? I have Been playing Fallen London for a while now, but have yet to make any friends in the community; if the the festival benefits enough from that then I suppose there is no time better than now to introduce myself. Last year I managed to get quite enough Masquing just by playing The Feast of the Rose! card (Ubiquitous frequency), so gifts weren't needed for any of the 3 or 10 Masquing companions. This year it seems gifts can add 10 points above the 20 points one can get from the card, which would be quite helpful when trying to get one of the companions that cost 40, 60, 80, or 100 Masquing. Thus you really only need friends if you want one of those indirectly Fate-locked companions.
Also, paying 10 Echoes per point of Masquing from a gift is consequently only worth it if you want to help someone get Fate-locked companions, or if the recipient has serious trouble drawing the feast-card. Otherwise it saves a lot of resources to just play the feast-card, and a few of the options are quite profitable even without the Masquing. Still, I suppose it can be fun to send expensive gifts to people. Not everything has to be about the Echoes, right? The Pink-painted Cat may cost 30 Echoes for 2 points of Masquing, but come on, it's a Pink-painted Cat that's also a pet!
I'll be saving my precious Fate for more important things though. Much like the last feast. I'm a miser without a moon.
EDIT: As I already had a Pink-Painted Cat from last year, I really don't feel the need for more such cats. But surely everyone should have at least one. ________________________________ edited by Gillsing on 2/14/2015

Oh, wait. One thing I neglected to mention regarding a certain non-Fate gift: As people may have noticed when the Apicius Club was open in the De Gustibus storylet, A Tiny Silver Kettle of Pickled Liar's Tongues can actually be a quite profitable gift if one keeps it until the next time the Procurer-General calls for assistance. Might be a while now, unlike last year, when it happened shortly after the feast instead of shortly before, but we're not going to leave Fallen London, are we? Ever? No, I didn't think so. Echoes will come to those who hoard.
