Indeed! It does seem a bit strange. I would have thought that all the promenades would start at 0 and then go up in length, rather than them all being 10 and starting at different points. Maybe if you're less experienced at thieving, you dither more before you begin?
On the engine side they want your promenade to end at a specific time. Since you can accomplish tasks to add time, it makes more sense to fire the end at zero and dwindle the quality rather than catch people at varying values they can't predict!

Jack-of-Smiles gives 10 trophies and 2 Approaching. The Special Constable and Blue Jack give 5 trophies. The Constable gives 4. The Actress, the Shopkeeper and the Monk give 3. Browsing at the Curiosity Shop gives 1 Unseen and removes 1 Approaching. Sneaking past the Argument and the Street-Performer give 1 Unseen and 1 Approaching, which you can balance out with a fortunate attempt at Loitering as a way to clear your hand a little.
-- Sir Frederick, the Libertarian Esotericist. Lord Hubris, the Bloody Baron. Juniper Brown, the Ill-Fated Orphan. Esther Ellis-Hall, the Fashionable Fabian.

A Monk? I've not seen that card. (I understand not seeing Jack, under my circumstances.)
The best I've done is 49 (aarrgh!), so one day I'll head back to attempt that magic 50 again.
-- Social Actions: send them to Kade Carrion (she/her; no Tournament of Lilies, please). an_ocelot has gone NORTH and cannot benefit from social actions!
Possibly-Useful Things: Spreadsheets and hints and link collections, oh my.

I've actually seen the "Jack" card in the Promenade, despite having...played the Jack Fate story to its conclusion. But I haven't seen the Monk card either. Apparently FBG is tinkering with it.

FYI, I just discovered that also the pickpocket gives 5 Trophies.
P.S.: thanks Sir Frederick!

The Constable also gives some points in Connected:Criminals, to throw that out as well.

Personally, I prefer the way Fallen London storylets work to Story Nexus, which is why I play it more. I think it's why most people play it more. Fallen London has won a slew of awards and praise for the way it works, so I'm not entirely sure why it's in need of changing. Then again, I still don't like the new interface, so what do I know?
I've been playing FL for quite a while, and tried out a couple of the SN games. The SN games never really caught on for me solely because of the game mechanics as well. I found the stories for Cabinet Noir and The Silver Tree particularly exciting (they are the only other games I've played beyond 2h in total), but the format made me go back to FL more frequently than I did these two. In fact, I've barely touched those games since I first started playing them. It would really please me to know that FL isn't shifting over into the format of SN. :s

Very pleased to meet your acquaintance. Now, if you would be so inclined to socialise...
