Crafting Portfolios of Souls

I need to craft five Portfolios of Souls to advance one of the stories I am following. Does anyone know of a better route to this than grinding souls in Spite and then trading these in for Sherry and Brilliant Souls in your inventory? Any suggestions much appreciated. edited by rdmaughan on 1/6/2013

There's a rare success from a Shadowy opportunity card (Below the Neath - look for stash option) that grants you a portfolio. If you're in Coil 4, you can load up on candles which can also be traded up to brilliant souls (candles->salts->memories->bsouls) and you are also rewarded with 2 portfolios if you betray the Bishop while In the Company of Monsters. Good luck.

Thank you. I still need to grind for Sherry but that makes getting the Brillian Souls much easier.

You can also get brilliant souls from thefts from the flit.

Generally speaking, for any Tier 3+ items, converting from lower-tier items will almost never be the most efficient.
For the items you can directly steal in the Flit (Brilliant Souls, Tales of Terror, Journals of Infamy), doing so gives you a 1.26E/action rate of return.
Stealing one of those items and then converting laterally will give you a lesser rate of return, but even the longest chain (stealing Journals of Infamy and then converting laterally 5x to end up with Memories of Distant Shores) will give you a 1.03E/action rate of return. This means that grinding Tier 1 items at 1E/action and then converting them upward is always going to be less efficient than stealing Tier 3 items and converting them laterally. (Stealing isn't always the most efficient option, of course, but it's a useful baseline.)
Invaluable for planning any grind of this sort is the conversion table at http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/item-conversions. edited by Tesuji on 1/6/2013

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks so =)
