It took a few talkative rats, but I finally lucked out and ended up with the same thing that apparently cost some people a monkey. I'll assume that since the monkey is more expensive there was a better chance of success.

Yes, I think the monkey's chance is "The odds are against you" while the rat is "A long shot... But you might win". Moot quetsion for me, as my character would never experiment potentially lethal substances on a Rattus Faber ^^"

@Alexis Kennedy: It's the day after the announced end of content, but it doesn't seem to be over. How will we know that it is? I'm debating between staying in London for more Mr. Sacks cards that haven't shown up, and going on my first visit to Flute Street.

You'll get those cards when you're out of Flute Street as well, so there's no reason not to go. I personally am going to zee after some heists...
Though of course, it might seem odd to get them off-season... Oh, and have fun in Flute Street! That reminds me I have to go there once I've got my Owl...
