Generally, I go in with 2 inside-information and nothing else.

You have better luck than I - that wasn't enough for my first epic failure of a heist. On return trips I've used about four, I think.

Well, something to note: Using your deck effectively helps. Keep cards you don't want in your hand, and draw cards one at a time. Also, use your choices effectively. Try to stick to things that have a rather high chance of success, and use your outside resources if possible (use kifers for the door, dreaded for the doorman, duchess connections for the cat, etc. Your inside-information should mainly be used to help you in sticky situations, or as a time-saver (as many options with it give 2 progress)

I wish there was an option for higher levels of Burglar's progress. I've gotten up to 11 in a vain attempt to get the maid to speak to me and could have gone even higher.

My biggest gripe with this is only peripherally related to the heist, namely I am lamenting the loss of the single action options when Preparing for a Big Score. Most vexing when I am down to my last action for the night and have to go do something else.

News in the Neath: Noted citizen of Fallen London, Abraham Bounty, has acquired six hundred and sixty six souls. Additionally rumour has it that the lion's share of those souls was from a theft of The Brass Embasy itself. We are quite certain that this portents nothing ominous for him. Well, nothing unusually ominous anyway.

I really enjoyed the second heist. The existence of multiple options (and thus different levels of reward) made it more appealing than the first one.

I usually like to have at least one Escape Route and either an Inside Information and an Intriguing Key or 2 Inside Informations. Two Inside Informations is usually plenty, unless you drag the heist out or have really bad luck.

Was the cap on level stats raised from 140? Been away from the game for a while - not seen these heists, or how to start them.

No, it's currently at 140 - 130 for persuasive. Heists can be accessed from the flit.

I just completed my first heist today, and I'm very pleased with the experience. It was quicker than I thought, but I liked how a prolonged, multi-action task wasn't just a long grind to prepare for a single last action, but rather allowed to prepare as much or as little as one liked, and then developed like a little storylet, nearly a mini-Ambition. Devolving the heist's actions to Opportunity Cards allows for more variety and takes away the grinding feeling, but the fact that the deck is temporarily a specific one allows a quick resolution, without all the wait when relevant Opportunity Cards are mixed in with all of the others. If this is an experimental mechanism for further game content, I wholeheartedly second a wider use of it! It's definitely better than grinding a quality or having to wait for Opportunity Cards (and cursing at every damned Stealth Watch Repair that pops up XD)

I haven't played through a heist till now and I was a bit disappointed -- not because it wasn't generous -- but because, yes, I'm one of those who plays for flavour, and getting a bunch of an item is not to me as flavourful as acquiring a hitherto unheard-of quality, or turning out to have irritated the masters, etc. That is just how perverse of a player I am smile
Alexis Kennedy wrote:
As folk here have speculated, this is intended to be a starting structure for numerous other heists, at different reward levels. It isn't much of a reward at Shadowy 150, but it's very generous at Shadowy 180. It's difficult to calculate the action cost of different strategies, and it can be enormously optimised. And, as always, some folk are more here for the fiercely optimised farming, and some more for the flavour. Not every new piece of content will be an especially generous reward.

But, also, there is a particular in-fiction reason why it's glim. (No spoilers.)

I like the content, but I have a few suggestions for improvement:
  • Make it clear that if you fail the heist, you go to prison. I failed my first one and was completely taken aback to be sent to New Newgate. Most ventures you fail don't have that kind of drastic punishment.
  • Reduce the action requirements to build up Casing. Since you need to get your Casing up well over 10, depending on how much insurance you want to buy, and each step takes 3 actions, it takes forever as you use up all your actions and have to wait. And unlike the heist itself, building up Casing is boring. Perhaps you could make some options cost multiple actions, with consonant rewards, but I think most of them should be normal, 1-action moves.
  • How about adding a dark lantern as a purchase, which would get you through darkened areas?
The heist itself is fun — it's getting there I didn't enjoy.

I failed a heist once and I didn't go to prison. I'm pretty sure it's a luck challenge and succeeding just gives you some suspicion.

I find preparing for heists pretty quick. I go in with two to three pieces of inside information and nothing else, which requires Casing 7 or 8 (25-30 change points). That can be done in less than 10 actions. Are you maybe over-preparing, or building up casing with one of the less efficient actions?

all of the 3 action options are less efficient than the five action options, but you need to be a POSI for those. Additionally, you typically want to have 2 escape routes, and then one or two keys and bits of information. That's generally enough, although if you feel unlucky, you can make sure you have 3 each.

There are two or three three-action options which are just as efficient as the PoSI option you can use without a Gang of Hoodlums. They give 9 change points for 3 actions rather than 15 change points for 5.

Also, I've pulled off something like six or seven heists, and botched only one. I've never gone in with an escape route or more than one key, and I don't think I've ever bought more than three pieces of information, either. So either I've been very lucky, or you could save yourself some actions...

Edit: I think I botched that one after I had enough progress to finish, too. I wanted to meet a drownie.

I admit to using the Gang of Hoodlums option. Take a while to get, but totally worth it

Personally I enter with nothing for the low-level heist and 2 inside information for the higher level one.
Having dreaded 10 and 4-card lodgings is obviously a bonus, though. Also, is there anywhere you can't use inside info where that key works? I haven't found anywhere.

Thanks for all the advice, and I'm sorry it took me awhile to answer — been absorbed elsewhere. I do think I was unlucky, and I also think I may not have been well enough equipped. I'm now a POSI and have more Dreaded, so that should help. Thanks again, all.
