How do I access the journal so I can figure out where to go and what to do?

Your journal would only contain what you've done, and only if you requested that the events be posted to it.
You can get an idea of what you've done from the stats on "myself" in the nested lists on the left near the bottom.
So, how far in are you? We are often willing to help you figure out what options you have open to you.
