As of this update, we have more Lab experiments should you have a base Watchful of 200 at least.
On average, the Lab experiments are 500 Lab research with 0-50 Parabolan Research in between.
The Dean finally gives you the Railway Steel needed to create the formula for Railroad Tracks, and reveals that he’s been scammed by Mr Fires into stealing your research in exchange for fake Justificandes.
It will provide options that will allow one to raise their Watchful base above 200, and will open up new toxic Lab experiments involving Mr Spices’ new drug that acts as a depressant, esp. for bat-related creatures. In the "Direct your own Research" card, you can even test it out on yourself if you are Mr Cards. At this point, you can decide to tell the Dean truthfully what the drug does to animals, or to lie about it.

Not only does it require unmodified Watchful of 200, but it shows what Record of Successful Forgery is for.
I’m not a Wiki Editor, but I’ve screenshotted info on it.
The first one is "A Luncheon With The Dean Of Supernumerary Fellows, a storylet in the Lab which unlocks with Unmodified Watchful of at least 200 and Prestige of your Laboratory of at least 40. Within are 4 choices:
Speak to him about your commitment to integrity. (Requires Record of Successful Forgery of 5 at MOST, in addition to the unmodified Watchful requirement of 200+). It promises a significant boost to Steadfast if below 15, without reducing any other Quirk. Since my Steadfast is already 15, I did not choose it.
Just bring your appetite, no agenda. (No additional requirement beyond the Watchful one). I chose this one. This leads to 3 screens of text (all of which I also have screenshotted for anyone who can - and is willing to - update the Wiki) and a reward of 3 points to Maximum Watchful cap, 1 Forged Justificande Coin, and 1 Railway Steel.
Speak to him about your care for students. (Requires no Disgruntlement among the Students, Teaching Reputation greater than or equal to 1/3 of the Prestige of your Lab, and the unmodified Watchful requirement of 200+), It promises a significant boost to Magnanimous if below 15, without reducing any other Quirk. Since my Magnanimous is already 15, and my Teaching Rep was not high enough, I did not choose it.
Speak to him about what he wants to hear. (Requires Record of Successful Forgeries equal to at least 1/3 of the Prestige of your Laboratory, and the unmodified Watchful requirement of 200+). It promises a significant boost to Subtle if below 15, without reducing any other Quirk. Since my Record of Successful Forgeries was not high enough, I did not choose it.
Again, I hope this is of use to the Community at large, and to our Wiki-editing friends in particular. I would be interested to hear the results of the other options.
I’m very confused – I have fully upgraded everything including fate options (lab size, equipment at 9, visionary student unlocked, the fate lab workers), and I’m trying to progress through the story content for the most part. What’s the quickest generic way of generating research?
My understanding is something along the lines of:
-Hire the profound student, visionary student, and two other randos
-Get the visionary student up to level 5 with the watchful option on her card before doing anything else
-Choose the collaborate option on the Profound student (Persuasive option) until eventually he hits 5, and then eventually disgruntlement starts rising
-Right before disgruntlement hits 6, graduate the visionary student
-Grind the next visionary student up to 5 via watchful option
-Go back to asking the profound student to collaborate via Persuasive option
-Repeat indefinitely
…Is this totally right? Totally wrong? I’m so absolutely confused. edited by Televangelist on 6/4/2020
If you have the Visionary Student unlocked, just working with them should be ideal. According to the wiki, the Profound Student’s collaborative research maxes out at 18 research, 27 on rare success, while the Visionary Student always gives research on success.
Level up you best student to 5 and collaborate with him until disgruntlment 6. This is general way, 28.something research per action. But some projects allow to use special options, like Kataleptic Toxicology for chemistry, red science for red science, etc, so you can get much more research per actions with high skills. I use fate specialist for projects with small amount of parabolan research.
Is there a list anywhere of specialties or such for the various lab people? I know some are fate locked, making it complicated, but the Silk Clad Expert, Eldest Daughter, Stoic Classicist, Reformed Protester and Percipient Cricketer all have to be bought to see what they can do, and right now it is just experamenting trading people in and out to see what they do well, and there are a few I cannot decide whether to buy or not.
As an aside, I promised info on Expert+Daughter, it seems to lower wounds, Echo here
Am I missing something or disambiguating the Eoliths in quite profitable? With Kataleptic Toxicology 5 and persuasive ~300 you can get Eolith on bone market and study them for nodules. Example for 50 Eoliths:
1 action to visit the market;
28 to beg for 50 eoliths (~90% success on 300 persuasive);
1 to leave the market;
1 to enter the lab;
1 to start research;
1 to get 5 LR;
1 to finish it;
repeat last 3 steps another 49 times;
1 final action to leave the lab.
That gets you 625 echo for 182 actions or roughly 3.43 EPA.
Basically, formula looks like this: 12.5x/(4 + 3x + x/2p)=EPA
Where x - number of Eoliths and p - persuasive challenge chance.
Pros:
It can be done with any level of lab equipment;
Easily repeatable grind that rely on very small opportunity deck;
No need for fate/ambition lab workers, any lab workers for that matter;
EPA starts from 2.25 (with 5 KT, 300 persuasive and 2 eoliths).
Theoretically, with dreaded & respectable 1 or 2, bizzare 3-14 and suspicion > 3 you can draw only 4 cards in the market (AFAIK), so, reliable meeting with a tentacled servant. Realistically, best case I’ve managed to get is BDR 5-0-2 and 289 persuasive (~87% challenge), still high success rate and 100% meeting with 5 card lodgings. edited by Lucius Vera on 6/6/2020

According to the wiki you only get Trembling Amber on a RARE success. The rest of the time you get Perfumed Gunpowder.
Is there a bug in the red science option for research (use what you know of the unknowable) ? Red science 8 should get a success rate of 80%, but i seem to have a lower rate (average 60-70%) after a few hundred actions. Might be a streak of bad luck, but it seems a bit strange edited by Scona on 6/7/2020
So i’m a wee bit lost right now. i want t improve my lab, but that requires atleast 10 surface blooms and a whooping 400 nightsoil. i realize theres a way to gain atleast surface blooms through creating skeletons, but it seems like a mess.

any help or a guide would be much appreciated!
Selling possesed goldfish via bone marked should be enough to grind for 100 perfumes.
posessed goldfish are quite easy to get in Parabola.

Tentacled buyers at moderate and high Bizzare pay in nightsoil. Moderate one buys Pulsating Ambers (bought for Echoes at the Bazaar tab) and Bazaarine poetry (Gifted student gives one volume upon graduation). High one buys Viric Suits, which are made in Viric Jungles in Parabola, but you have to have finished a story during Feast of the Rose to enter it. edited by Aro Saren on 6/8/2020

It appears I need 15 dreaded to meet with the teller, and sadly i can only get it up to 14 :/ oh well, long way it is.
Stuck here for some times too. Actually getting stuff for gunpowder is quite easy after Paleontology update.
You need to do 2 skeletons - one for Tentacled Servant (3-14 bizzare, shouldn’t be that hard) and one for Familiar Bohemian Sculptress (Respectable 0 can be problem, but there is hat for -1 respect and possesed goldfish for -4. Hate to help fingerkings, but how much problem can goldfish do?).
Sculptress would take basic skeleton - get ribcage from Constables favour in Palace, arms from Criminals (favour card in Flit) and whine to A Pedagogically Inclined Grandmother (Bone market, dreaded 0) for some legs. Easiest head to get is Brass Skull, although it costs. Haven’t tried spheres from Meticulous student - maybe they would be cheaper. You don’t need to get any Skeleton: Theological Implication for Blooms - you get them even for usual skeleton. Just don’t put SabreTooth Skull or Jurassic Thigh - Sculptress can’t into Antiquity
Rubbery wants some Amalgamy. I was here on Whitsun, so I have IronTooth bird. Hunt it in Parabola and "Search the undergrowth" on last step - you will get Thorned Ribcage. Also you can hunt couple of Albatrosess while you at it - each one of them can be researched into 2 wings in your lab, and wings work both as legs and arms. For head use whatever you have - Brass Skull is easiest. edited by Alpha900i on 6/9/2020

thanks mate! would that actually ebe nough to settle the whole gunpowder debacle?
Was for me. Right now I have 28 blooms and 9680 nightsoil. I got this and all blooms+soil I spend on grade from 1 skeleton for sculptress and one for rubbery. And, I think, 1 amber I sold to rubbery, because I didn’t realise how effective skeleton trading would be.
Check this guide https://fallenlondon.fandom.com/wiki/Assembling_a_Skeleton_(Guide)
If data here correct - and I have no reason not to believe it - for 10 blooms you need skeleton of 2500 price. Brass Skull only gives you more. And soil goes 1:1 with skeleton price, so you would have a lot.

Just a heads-up, the 1:1 ratio of Penny Value - Nightsoil was a bug that was since removed. The current exchange rate is (Value/50 + 5) - wiki has been corrected accordingly.
So, with the Railway we have multiple new experiments available.
After building the first stage of tracks, I’ve run into something that unlocked a new branch in the Reflection of my Laboratory, Dream Up a New Experiment. From there, you can unlock two experiments for obtaining Artisan Studies (level cap increase for Artisan of the Red Science).
Once you have Artisan Studies, you can unlock two palaeontology-related experiments with Red Science skill checks. First is Device for Duplicating Bones (yum!), second the Betrayal of Measurement (which is supposed to "change the measurement of bones", whatever that means).
Some details for those interested:
The level cap increasing experiments are rather long, taking 2500/2700 ordinary Research and 200/300 Parabolan Research, respectively. Forgot to check the Experimental Object value, but they are both mathematical with Red Science Focus, obviously.
Device for Duplicating Bones needs Palaeontology 5 and the skill check for unlock at Red Science 5 was 70%. Experimental Object value is 360 and it is an Engineering project with Red Science Focus. Upon completion you get 1 Human Arm + the Device (which presumably may be useful for duplicating bones somewhere). It also gives 1 CP of Artisan of Red Science. The experiment is repeatable, so it may serve as a non-Fate way to grind Red Science (now that we no longer have Aged Eggs).
Betrayer of Measures has Experimental Object value of 360 and is an Engineering project with Red Science Focus. Skill check for unlock at Red Science 5 was 50%. It needs 300/300 Lab/Parabolan research, respectively, and gives 1 point of AotRS plus the Betrayer itself, useful for unlocking another experiment - see next post.

A rather grand addition, and I have a feeling there might be much more to find down the (quite literal) line! edited by Aardvark on 6/25/2020
