What are all the ways to get into newgate?

I was wondering what all the ways were to get into newgate prison, what their conditions were and what penalties come with them. I recently got to 40 renown with the criminals faction and would like to get the corresponding item associated with it; however I want to avoid raising my criminal record getting into newgate or waste my 450+ connected hell if it is somehow possible.

If you want to avoid those, you can either seek the name, or pay fate to choose light fingers as your ambition.

With this information I now know of 4 ways I can get into newgate:
-Reach 8 suspicion (raising my crimminal record)
-Fail robbing the Brass embassy (lose ALL connected Devils)
-Seek the name of Mr.Eaten (And all that comes with it)
-Change ambition to light fingers (Pay fate)

Are there any other options that I am missing?

You could of course wait for the Hell conversion to the Renown system, at which point failing to rob the Embassy would only wipe your Favours.

That is something I have considered, however given certain statements given about the conversion I doubt it will take place any time soon.

Vake hunters also have to go to prison as part of their ambition. You have to beat up some guy in the shuttered palace in order to get thrown in there, if I remember correctly.

Not quite, unfortunately. Beating up the random functionary is provided as a quick way to gain suspicion, but it just sends you to prison as normal.

Are there any other failed heists that send you directly to newgate?

Nope, it is just the embassy(the normal heists also just give you alot of suspicion IIRC but I know you won’t avoid a criminal record with them).

On the other hand, unless you are collecting money for an Overgoat or cider or want to have the torment destiny in real life by trying to keep 15 notability a criminal record is not so bad.

Just be careful not to let your criminal record get too high (level 5 - A Hardened Recidivist), or you may have trouble using the Instant Ablution Absolution. I’m not sure if having a criminal record that high actually prevents you from using the Absolution or simply makes it less effective, but I for one would rather not find out the hard way.

A criminal record that high actually prevents you from using the pink stuff. My alt found out the hard way.

Yikes, that’s definitely something I’d like to avoid, even though I can’t remember the last time I actually used any Absolution (especially since the ‘Confound the Constables’ storylet became available in Spite again).

Here’s a question for the frequently-arrested: Does getting arrested increase one’s Criminal Record by a full level, or simply by one change point? i.e. Does it take getting arrested five times or fifteen times before A Criminal Record reaches level 5?

Definitely cp and not levels. I paid very close attention both the times that I got arrested last week.

In related news, breaking out of New Newgate is an auto-fire event as soon as you acquire the relevant items. If you need to stick around in order to conclude some business, take care not to leave early by mistake. Pirate Hats may help.

How many times have you been arrested before, if any? Unless you’ve been arrested a lot, there won’t be any downsides from slightly incrementing your criminal record. Unless you want to avoid it for RP reasons.

The wiki says “+1 cp up to 7”. Not sure how to read that since the seven is missing a unit - but the increase is definitely in CP not levels. Has anyone ever done the math on this one?

This almost always means +1 CP up to level 7.

Alright - thanks, dov. How many CP are a level in this case?

I’m running with the assumption that the amount of CP needed to level up is identical to the target level but I haven’t independently verified that.

In that case, 15 arrests would be correct. That’s a lot of arrests without any real consequences.

You’re correct that you need X CP to advance to level X. To level 7 is a total of 28 CP.

This works until level 70 for the main 4 qualities, or 50 for any other quality. Then the CP needed remains flat (i.e. 70 per each level of the main qualities past 70, and 50 CP for each level of any other quality past 50).

Triangular numbers. Nice :D. Thank you for the explanation, Professor dov!

I guess I owe my alt an apology for getting her arrested that many times. &quotA Wretched Recidivist&quot doesn’t sound like a quality you’d reach without actively trying but here we are…

There may also be a way to wipe your criminal record: at the end of the Fate-locked story ‘A Trade in Faces’, I seem to recall being offered an opportunity to side with a certain group (which I did not choose) in exchange for having my criminal record erased. Can anyone confirm this?
