Weekly Questions, Beginning 30/01/2017

Who likes answers? I like answers! But without questions, answers are merely statements. Use this thread to ask questions, to which answers can be provided!

I hope this is the right place to ask this. My question is (broadly) about social actions. I’d like to get more involved with other players, especially from a role-playing perspective, but I’m not sure how to go about it, both in terms of which actions to pick (I don’t need any help with menace-reduction or second-chances, and opportunity cards feel few and far-between) and messages to accompany them: Some of the messages the game sends with actions, such as with a room at the house of chimes, or inviting someone to a private dinner, feel a bit overly-intimate to me, but either way I’m never sure what, if anything, to actually say, whether from an in- or out-of-character perspective. I just seem to end up with a list of acquaintances that outsizes my ability to meaningfully interact with them, save for sending the occasional surprise package. I’m aware that I can meet people on the forums, I’m just unsure what to do after I’ve met them, and I feel like there’s no reason for anyone to becoming acquainted with me since there’s so little I can do for them.

I feel obliged to try and re-phrase this into the form of an actual question. Social actions: Which ones? When? In what way? With Whom?

Hello Dear Madams, Sirs and Things of Neath!

I was wondering if you would be so nice as to indulge me with a bit of information about which of vast variety of items (some call them rubbish, I call them my treasures!) shall I sell to the Bazaar?

I’d be delighted if you could group items you’ll be kind to tell me about into three main categories:

 1. Items I should always sell, as they’re useless and have no purpose.
 2. Items I might sell, unless I’m planning to X. Category for commonly sold, but sometimes useful or things that I should sell if I have more than Y.
 3. Items I should never sell.

Thank you all in advance for your answers.

Most things are in category 2 and 3. There are very few completely worthless things and they all have collector’s value for being rare and/or limited in available quantity.

Personally I keep a few thousand of most the cheap things, and reserve progressively fewer the more expensive they are.

It mostly depends on personal choice. I got a vial of master’s blood when I sold the Nadir location, and I sold it. I probably won’t ever have another one for a long time (if at all), so if I were concerned about collections, I should have kept it. But I was more interested in money, so selling it was better for me.
For generally available items (like glim, jade, etc), I hold on to them until I need money, then I sell as many off as needed. I can just grind them later if I need them. However, I generally don’t sell off mysteries items (because they’re used so much) or rumor or influence items (because they take a more work to grind).
Nothing is entirely useless, but there’s probably not a whole lot of point to holding onto thousands and thousands of things like rostygold or brass, although it’s good to have some. About the only thing I sell immediately is street signs because I’m not aware of any use for them and I get them quite frequently out of surprise packages.

Hi Mercury!

I’ve recently been trying to become more socially active on Fallen London, so here’s my advice:

Which ones - I’ve been giving gifts lately (it builds up my Magnanimous quirk as well, which is a nice bonus!). Coffee at Caligula’s is a reliable option, but the non-social rewards are negligible until you get to POSI status. I suppose that if you’re looking for something a little more in-depth you could try seeking out a Patron. If you’re feeling particularly nice, you could nurse someone back to health. If you develop your Singular Plant enough, you’ll have Tournament of the Lilies options to interact as well. Once you get a Salon or an Orphanage, you can invite people with certain professions to come speak (a personal favorite of mine). If and when you acquire a newspaper, I believe you can interview acquaintances as well.

When - Whenever you feel like it!

In what way - One thing you could do, if you feel you have a surplus of Second Chances (you mentioned you have plenty) is use them up via cards like &quotThe strength of scars&quot and then build them back up again by communicating with your acquaintances.

Edit: You could also use up Second Chances by sending them to people in the &quotGive a Gift&quot card - that way you get two social actions for the price of one ;0)

With whom - As with &quotwhen,&quot this is largely your personal preference. Not jerks, I guess?

What to say - I usually don’t attach much of a message to my social actions; however, it can be nice (especially if you’ve asked them to do the same thing a whole bunch of times). If you want to use social actions for in-depth RP, I’d suggest finding people on the forums interested in the same thing, then perhaps exchanging in-game letters? They only cost 1 pence to send (last I checked), and you can say quite a bit. Perhaps your characters can decide what social activities to engage in through those communications!

Does that answer your question sufficiently?

Hi Aldinth!

I usually hold onto about 500 of the 1 pence and 2 pence items, 100 or 200 of the middling items, and I’m pretty clingy with expensive stuff - I’d like to have at least one of every item I’ve obtained (though this doesn’t always work out in practice). If you’re settled in your profession, though, anything you get in weekly income can usually be sold off pretty readily if you’re scrapped for cash. Venge-rat corpses aren’t particularly useful, I guess. I’d suggest searching items you’re not sure about on the wiki, and then going through their uses if there are only a couple.

Hope that helps!

A while back I sold off all my nevercold brass and this came back to bite me later. Even if you think you won’t need something, keep some of it.

Just to answer one of the last week questions:

“Hunt is On! 8” intentionally locks you out of the LoT Third Coil options.

Killing Marsh Wolves is still moderately worthwhile (~1.73 EPA), though still a drop of 8-10 PPA from the goat demon :(

I’ve got a question regarding profiles: I’ve noticed that some qualities that don’t seem like they ought to have numbers attached to them do have numbers on my profile page. For example, my Addressed As: Professor is apparently “11.” My profession (author) also has a number when it’s posted to my Scrapbook. Is that just a categorization thing (i.e. Professor is the 11th on the list of possible titles)? Or does it bear more significance?

All qualities are essentially items as far as the internals of the game is concerned, so they all have a number. I’m guessing professions are all the same quality and their effects are determined by their count.

Got it. Thanks, Kaijyuu!

I spent Fate for the Quiet Deviless companion, but now a letter arrives after I sold my soul. Will I lose my companion if I open the letter?
Can I get rid of them and start over later?
And if it is permanent, will it prevent me from unlocking some other important options? I’ve already got the 5 card devil lodging and the discounted companion.
(OK, that is: &quotHave I thoroughly exploited an intimate of devils and is it the time to get rid of them safely?&quot. Who’s the devil, actually.)

Been away from Fallen London for quite some time, and I have forgotten quite a lot of the less intuitive aspects of the game. my question is this: I am currently working on Ambition: Light Fingers, and am in need of respectable. I have read that you get 4 points of it for being in God’s Editors. I do believe that I am, but I don’t see the respectable points from it. Do I need to equip the affiliation? If so, how do I do that?

How do I reduce my scandal safely? I am one action away from hitting 8…

Yes, you need to equip it. Just go to the &quotMyself&quot tab and if you click on your silhouette it takes you to your lodgings, then you equip it under affiliation.

Much obliged, my good sir.
I spent Fate for the Quiet Deviless companion, but now a letter arrives after I sold my soul. Will I lose my companion if I open the letter?
No.
Can I get rid of them and start over later?
Getting rid of the Deviless? No way I know of… and why would you? She’s adorable.
Oh… getting rid of the other Devils? You already did… you don’t have anything they want anymore, you know.
And if it is permanent, will it prevent me from unlocking some other important options?
If we both have the same letter in mind, it will just remove your ‘Intimate’ quality. Which means you’ve just disappointed one of these vultures… the rest should not be perturbed and will happily take over the siege once you have your soul back… if you do so, that is.

And no, you won’t be missing out on anything one way or another. The whole Devil Deal is pretty self-contained, I’m not even sure they actually got your name on anything official in the Brass Embassies ledgers…
How do I reduce my scandal safely? I am one action away from hitting 8…
Suspicious stains? Employ Nikolas & Sons Instant Ablution Absolution! Available at your favourite Bazaar.
despite the wording, it also helps against Scandal. although totally noone has any idea just how that works. :)

Although it might be way less expensive to just take a leave and go visit the Colonies… some one-eared lady told me they are exceptionally interesting this time of the year.

(Well, she also told me she hates carnival, masks and the company of drunken revellers - make of that what you will…)

Very informative, thank you very much!
