Weekly Questions, Beginning 13/02/2017

I’m sick again; forgive me for not being more verbose. Questions - ask 'em!

Hi, I am absolutely loving the game, spending money on fate and everything, but I can’t find anything to do. Seems I’m stuck on every storylet b/c I need something to complete but I can’t find how to get what I need…hope all that makes sense. I’m using the wiki but it doesn’t help me get unstuck. Not sure if I’m whining or asking for help, lol. Mainly I need the signature with a flourish or whatever it’s called to proceed.

The Making your Name qualities need to be gained in order. For the Name Signed with a Flourish, you start in Veilgarden and eventually move up to the Shuttered Palace. Usually the stories you need to complete have “complete this story to progress” or similar in their description. Look over all the stories in veilgarden and make sure you’ve completed all the ones that mention the Flourish quality (especially ones that require the highest level of it).

Thank you for the help, so if I don’t see anything like “complete this story…” am I in the wrong area? Should I travel somewhere else? I’m trying to work in my persuasive, which is why I’m in veilgarden.

If and when you’ve unlocked the shuttered palace, the tales for persuasive continue there. what’s your making name persuasive?

There’s a persuasive storyline with 7 levels, they’re asking how far you are on that.

Oh, well, I have a ton of open storylines here…which one would it be? Sorry for the ignorance, very new to the game!!

Name signed with a flourish, I think you start it in veilgarden.

Hi Floy, it would be helpful if you could let the forum know what your ‘A Name Signed with a Flourish’ score is: if you can click on the ‘Myself’ tab, find the 'Qualities section and expand ‘Story’ and then find your ‘A Name Signed with a Flourish’ value, then it’ll help to pinpoint what you should be doing next. (As you say, there are a lot of possible options!)

Oh, Okay!! That helps, lol.

A Name Signed with a Flourish 3 - Written with Perfumed Ink

I cannot seem to find a way to trade in my Rose-Gifts for Masquing! I’ve gone through two feast of the rose cards and the option isn’t showing up.

The card you need should be the Lady in Lilac

In that case, a new location in London should have become available to you — namely, the Shuttered Palace, in western London (home to the Traitor Empress, long may her name live in infamy, et cetera). Here is where it should appear on your map of London (don’t look at this image too closely, as it contains one or two spoilers about locations you might uncover in the future). You should head there in order to pursue your Persuasive career.

Once you are at the Shuttered Palace, you will be first of all looking to meet the Duchess. You will need to improve your ‘Connected: The Duchess’ quality by performing various tasks. I will let you

D’oh, my bad — in that case, you should still have the option to Make Your Name: Getting to the Ball available in Veilgarden, then? If so, then that’s the path you should be following. You need to work on increasing your ‘Connected: Society’ quality (through whatever means are available to you) and then attempt to wangle an invitation to the Ambassador’s Ball. That’s your next move.

Okay, this leads to a new question (I didn’t know about the list of stories on “myself”, this is great. I have a ton open, should I be going back and trying to close some. Would that help raise my attributes, etc? Or stick with the “making your name”?

This is not a list of stories, but a list of qualities for your character. It tracks things you’ve done/gained so that the game knows what options to present to you.

So there’s nothing to &quotclose&quot in that list. But it’s useful to know it’s there to check on where you stand with various qualities.

As for &quotMaking Your Name&quot for the 4 main qualities: in RPG terms, think of those as main quests - each with a linear progression through 7 levels. As you build up your &quotmaking you name&quot qualities, new options will open (and others will close!). In addition, there are many many options throughout Fallen London which are not tied to the &quotMaking your Name&quot progression.

So, try a bit of everything. If you encounter an interesting storyline, pursue it. If you want to advance your character along a specific path faster, then always look for the &quotMaking Your Name&quot options, but note that you might be locking yourself out of some things by progressing quickly.

Each level of making your name gives like 5 levels to their relevant stat. Also if you’re after persuasive, I am able to tutor people for 5 levels a week.

Even if you complete a story, its progress tracker will remain–that’s how Fallen London knows you completed the story!. Sometimes (but not always), the description will indicate that it’s complete. There’s also several cases where stories have not been fully written, and several cases where the beginning and the end are very far apart. So don’t worry about trying to “clear it out,” although you can use it to see if there are any loose ends you forgot to clear up.

The “making your name” stories are the “Main Quests” of Fallen London. They are signpost quests that will introduce you to new locations, mechanics, and content. If you are lost, they are generally the place to look to find direction. Progress is also generally required to unlock major parts of the game. Still, Fallen London is about the journey as much as the destination so don’t feel like you’re dawdling if you take the time to explore a piece of side-content.
