Weekly Fallen London Questions, 8/1/2018

I got 80 rare successes out of 1471 recorded attempts, which is 5.44%.

So 5% seems to be right.

does De Gustibus still happen?

Not for the past 3 years.

See here.

I am going to add a tip here about fattening up the Noman, and this tip helps you get more cards - assuming that you don’t have the Cider.

If you decided to ally with the Big Rat, you can spend 7.20 Echoes worth of Talkative Rattus Faber to get the Casing to purchase an Escape Route and start a Heist. Immediately escape afterwards.

This takes 7 Actions, and can refill your cards as long as you went into the Heist with 1/3 of your card stack capacity filled.

Fattening up the Noman is not always about having the right Quirks. It’s about drawing the Noman’s Progress a lot more frequently.

P.S. That said, if you know of any ways to nuke your deck of potentially drawn cards, do so.

Players with the Light Fingers ambition progressed into the penultimate update can quadruple their deck for six actions and no other cost. I’ve been using this to get fleeced more often by the Urchins, especially since Hallowmass kind of tapped out my ability to grind Notability in a hurry.

Was the Flash Lay trick to get a refresh in 2 actions nerfed?

Still works, as of a couple of days ago.

Ah okay. Everyone was talking about much worse ways to refresh a deck, so I was wondering.

I’m a little hesitant about 2-action full refreshes.

The Light Fingers almost-refresh used to be 2 actions, when the content was first released. I was unsure if that was intended, so I filed a bug report. I got a reply saying the issue was addressed (I don’t think they said “fixed”), and the next time I checked is when the action cost had been raised to 6.

I have taken this as guidance that FBG considers 2 actions to refresh your deck to be crossing some sort of line, while 6 actions is OK (or at least as far as they’re willing to go, considering playability trade-offs to the actual content).

I suspect the Scandal/Flash Lay trick has been allowed to sit around because it’s harder to nerf. It would require a mechanics change, not just a content change like the Light Fingers nerf. In the meantime, I’ve been avoiding it.

I am ashamed. I did so many Flash Lays, but have not thought of using those.

Thanks for bringing up that exploit anyway.

P.S. Oh man, this exploit is so wonderfully cheesy - so much cheeeeese.
P.P.S. I have to put up with the scandal reduction card appearing in the deck though.

Any cards I should be looking out for that increase quirks? This is.hard

I suggest those that increase quirks by 2 CPs or more. The +1 CP ones are just not worthwhile.

If you prefer non-card ways, keep in mind that &quotMusic of the tomb&quot gives 1 CP of Melancholy, and that’s a repeatable storylet option over at the Empress’s Court.

Why can you still buy Pails of Snow via the urchin card?
I thought this stops when it is no longer snowing?

When will the pails melt? As soon as the wicket closes? Later?

Hm? How does this work?

I assume you go in with 5 scandal by using a scandal reducing gear and remove that gear once you start and you spend one action on failure or go with 4 scandal and use a scandal increasing gear once you are in. I am not sure if we have any scandal reducing gear but we have scandal increasing gear.
Edit: just checked and you need less than three on all three menaces to start a flash lay so I am not sure if we have enough gear to pull this of.

Further edit: we have +3 scandal in total from gear :)

Short version: You need Scandal at most 2 (unmodified!) to start the Flash Lay, and you get kicked out with Scandal 5 (modified!).

So by having Scandal 2, together with +3 from gear you satisfy both conditions. You can enter (one action) and immediately leave (one action) for a full deck refresh.

No!!! Please don’t remind Failbetter staffers about this exploit by describing it here. :(

(I deleted and edited some of my earlier posts.)

This is a great lopsided exploit!

It’s really nothing new and was discussed during the Hallowmass here and on reddit as well. I think FBG are more than aware of this issue, but, to be honest, I think it was intentional.
Same as the new and better grinds to compensate the year difference between vets and new players. I assume we can all just wait and see!

EDIT: And it’s not really an exploit. We are all talking about game feature; probably more an unbalanced item/situation.

Well, I sure hope that it is intentional. It is a work-around for the fickleness of the luck of the draw.

IF somehow you haven’t finished the Embroiled in the Wars of Illusion story you can cash in your Seeking and mo0ve to Mahogany Hall to draw cards (6 of these).[/quote]

I actually had no idea this was an entire sub-plot! Damn; now I wish I hadn’t performed my Grand Illusion so early.
