About 12, assuming you have no other acquaintances. But that would be a silly number.
I have a… personal, if still game-related question. To be honest, it feels inappropriate to ask here, but I still feel like I need to know. I apologize in advance.
On several occasions with multiple acquaintances, I have had invites for coffee, healing etc sent out to acquaintances, only to be completely ignored by them. I have had weeks, if not months pass with still no response. At first, I had assumed that perhaps they were late to respond or didn’t log in often. Later, I had thought they had quit the game entirely, which would be a shame but is understandable. Then, I decided to check their profiles. I learned that several of my non-responding acquaintances were and are still very active in Fallen London, which meant that they were deliberately ignoring me. I would have preferred having my invites be rejected, rather than this. This… really hurts, surprisingly.
I guess my question is what should I do? Should I snub them? Or should I keep them still, if only for the Influence? Or am I merely misinterpreting the situation?
PS: 12 patrons? Is that right?

It depends heavily on the individual. Deliberate snubbing is probably low on the probability list. The highest thing on the list is likely to be "didn’t have the actions at the time, forgot later." Healing and nightmare requests might be deliberately stockpiled until they’re needed.
The best thing to do is probably to clear the air: a simple, polite note on the forums (or even a letter) asking if they missed the message or still needed healing, etc. If they respond, you have an answer. If not, well, you have leisure to pursue more productive acquaintanceships. High Influence is more a limiting factor than a benefit, so if you encounter complete radio silence, there’s no real reason not to clean house, should you be so inclined.
Stockpiling healing and nightmare requests is an understandable action, if maybe slightly irritating on the sender’s part. Forgetting coffee invites, gifts etc doesn’t really make a lot of sense. They are clearly visible and taking up space on the left side of the message tab, so forgetting about them for months on end makes little sense.
Still, I am really grateful for the advice. Considering these were friends I had made before discovering the forums, I’ll send a letter and try to figure out what’s up, once I manage to return home to London. Depending on the response (or lack there of), I’ll try to figure out what to do from there. Thanks for listening.

I had a similar thing happen; someone declared their affection. I accepted and issued a subsequent invitation, whereupon they were never heard from again and did not respond to contact. I left the message for about six months and then decided they probably only wanted to read the relevant bits of text. That train of thought made it easier to clear the deck.
Some people might not check those message tab that often (or ever).
And there’s good reason to wait on invitations to coffee: these give some MW, so the person might wait until they are ready to start raising MW again.
A lot of people (me) are dumb dumbs who are constantly forgetting to check messages, if by the small chance I am one of those people who you’re talking abt im very sorry

What gets me is when someone sends you a social invite, but when you try to respond you find they are not in London, or unavailable for some other reason. They initiate it, then have the brass neck to just bugger off somewhere else. That, I think, is rude. I make sure I am going to be staying in town for a spell if I’m throwing out invites. This happens so often it’s ridiculous.
There is always the possibility of course that they’ve been unexpectedly overtaken by a menace state. Wanting to retain some faith in human nature I prefer to be charitable and believe that this is what has happened, in which case they are merely incompetent rather than inconsiderate. :)
I clear out my messages of unwanted requests about once a year or so. I don’t send any without prior communication.
I finally decided to go for the The Seven-Fold Knock. At Winking Isle, I have to abandon my worldly possessions.
Is there a sensible use for the rare items I have to surrender other than selling to the bazaar?
Namely for Magnificent Diamonds, Fabulous Diamonds, Personal Recommendations, Mountain-sherds, Elemental Secrets or Primaeval Hints?
The magnificent diamonds can be used to create bejeweled lenses if you happen to have the Royal Behtlehem lodgings and want to use their Making Waves option.
Personal Recommendations are good for weddings (the ones to other player characters), but if you are not planning one, then there isn’t much to do with them past the initial PoSI acquisitions.
The Mountain Sherd can be turned in to the tigers for 35 Tribute.
Not much use for the Elemental Secrets unless you have a whole lot of them and are still at St. Arthur’s candle (unlikely).
Primaeval Hints can be fed to ravens if you want to collect a bunch of different ones.
The best way to store your echoes (since you have to dump those too), IMO, is buying urchins and giving them away for tribute.
There was a question about raising quirks to SMEN levels in one of the earlier threads. Apparently Heartless is grindable on Mutton Island.
Less than 30 cards and RNG gave me City Vices: what profit? card, but I’ll skip it for now.
But, what to the other options offer (material) and is there any juicy text there? Even if it’s a spoiler I would appreciate the info!
Cheers!
How many actions does a zailing trip take on average?

Personal Recommendations can be combined with a Collection of Curiosities and 7 Society Favors on the Bazaar Lodgings card for a stack of Echoes and a pile of Making Waves. This is the only repeatable use that I am aware of. It’s a bit of work to pull off, but it’s worth the time because the payout is far better than the 6 stupid echoes the Bazaar will give you.
That depends heavily on ship and luck, and also on Experienced Zailor level. Thus, take all that follows as rough calculations only.
Moving to destinations outside the Sea of Voices takes 55 CP of Approaching Journey’s End. If you move forward chiefly through opportunity cards, then you’re looking at an average of 3 CP per action, or 20 actions total (19 to zail, 1 to dock). This figure assumes that Troubled Waters are behaving and you’re letting the Zee have all the unfortunate zailors, but it also doesn’t take into account drawing the Wily Zailor card or the special cards for each ship. Given that you are likely to err on both directions in a trip, then it’s still likely a fair estimate.
To maximize CP/action (and therefore EPA for overzee grinds), you will want either a Clipper or a Zub. The Clipper’s card gives a fantastic 9 CP (equal to a maxed-out Zailor card), but also gives 6 CP of Troubled Waters. Its other bonuses are all for Lashing Waves or worse. The Zub card is fairly slow, but it lowers Troubled Waters, and it converts the Killing Wind (which can appear at any Troubled Waters level) to do the same thing. Therefore, its slower speed is balanced by the fact that you are much less likely to have to spend actions on Troubled Waters control.
Ignoring cards and Steaming Boldly or Prudently give much faster results (+14 for prudent zailing), but they also increase Troubled Waters proportionately. Taking this route will all but force you into Troubled Waters control, probably multiple times, and gives no other advantages either.
For a combined strategy, you could take cards until you get to 41 CP of Approaching Journey’s End (level 8 + 5 CP) and then (if your Troubled Waters is low enough) Steaming Prudently for the last action. This would mean, on estimate, 16 actions (14 cards, 1 Steaming, 1 to dock). In practicality, only the Zub is likely to pull that off with any consistency.
It’s long, it’s rough, and it doesn’t get into the nitty-gritty of how likely you are to draw what cards, etc., but I hope it helps.
I havent found a current guide now a days, but how does one go around to get both austere and hedonist to 12 at the same time?

Rough is all I really need right now. I’m making a grinding guide so I wanted an example of how many Urchins you’d need to exchange for tribute to counteract zailing. Thanks for all the info!

That guide’s out of date. Iirc the Iron Republic only lets you get Hedonist to 10, though Austere still works fine. The Feast of the Exceptional Rose is almost here though, so there’s a rare success that can get Hedonist all the way up to 15.
