Here’s this week’s quick questions thread!
Has there been an explanation lore-wise as to why a lot of people don’t have names but designations in our fallen London? This week’s ES had a proper name/surnamce and it hit me like a brick.
I think it has always been a storytelling choice, not something intrinsic to the world. The text might call her a Sardonic Music-Hall Singer, but her friends call her Liz or Marie or Helen. The namelessness is part of the house style, a way to compactly describe, to focus your attention on the character’s appearance or attitude, and perhaps to make us all a bit more disconnected; we are all strangers in this great, dark city. It also keeps them from having to name every urchin that wanders on stage.
It’s worth noting, however, that FB’s never been adverse to giving a name when it suited their purposes. We know the names of Jenny and Lydia and Feducci, among lesser lights, and I remember some story somewhere in which another character called one of these walking epithets by name. So I think it’s safe to assume that our nameless vergers and gentlemen and poets are in fact named Bill and Ollie and Bert to their friends.
Thank you!
I seem to vaguely remember that Her Enduring Majesty / our (Traitor) Empress started this trend when the Neath fell and she forbade the people of London to speak her name. The custom of not using your name then spread to Society, Bohemians, etc. I can’t find the exact (early game) text though, so I may not be correct.
Anyone else notice the Amanuensis card disappearing when you "Perhaps Not" out of it? I haven’t noticed other cards doing this (though correct me if I’m missing something), and it is singularly misfortunate that that particular card does so; between this and the correction of its frequency, Society favours no longer have a reliable place in the quest for Notability.
Yes, indeed. It happened to me yesterday evening, and I thought I’d done something wrong.
That is a great shame – the society favours were a nice little earner on there. Though maybe that behaviour was unusual? The only similar thing I can think of is if you click on one of the cards that are combinations of previous cards. Clicking on "Perhaps not" there doesn’t revert to the card you drew, but to the now extinct card you chose, so the original choices are no longer available (an example is Wolfstack in the Fog).
Has there been an explanation lore-wise as to why a lot of people don’t have names but designations in our fallen London? This week’s ES had a proper name/surnamce and it hit me like a brick.
I think Chris or someone from FBG once offered details about this.
Incidentally, on a not unrelated matter – has anyone else noticed the red-bordered Nightmare cards now have to be discarded after use?
yes thank you not just them all auto fires in death do as well though if you discard one they all disappear if you’ve used them
Incidentally, on a not unrelated matter – has anyone else noticed the red-bordered Nightmare cards now have to be discarded after use?
Yes, they are working again on the cards.
You could do the same if you went in the bazaar tab and sell/buy something; the deck didn’t refresh.
I’d like to ask for advice. I heard about Neathmas, although never participated in it yet. As I found out, So-Called Snow would be quite a resource to have. Now I almost saved for about 4 portions of it - that is, if Urchins wouldn’t raise their prices. Really hope they wouldn’t. Why even would they. Also I got myself Vial of Bazaar Tears.
As I can see, best things to get in Neathmas are premium class lodgings (upgrade for hotel room and Bazaar loft at least - I am not that close with devils and not planning to become in nearest time) and remote lodgings. Noman … even it’s concept somehow brings me sadness, so I most likely pass on this one. Not that much of a profit for something so depressing anyways.
So there are my questions:
- did I miss something? Noman, upgraded premium lodgings, remote lodgings … is there more in Neathmas?[/li][li]how many pails of So-Called snow can one get without buying it from Urchins? Most likely wouldn’t be able to buy all 9-10 pails I need directly, so every portion of free stuff is counts. Those Threnodies aren’t that easy to get, mostly because of favours[/li][li]when things usually start to happen? I assume we can start getting snow and related things on Dec, 1, while ability to spend lacre understanding appears much later, in Jan, 6. Is it so?[/li][li]is there something else one should now about Neathmas?

no I think you’ve got it all theire
I need to get my hands on a Night-Whisper during the next month and I don’t have much of anything. Could someone advise me on a course of action?
Well, I just got two from excavating a Shrine of Deep Heaven. Got lucky, of course.

I’m running Fidgeting Writer storyline. Heavily randomized, but requires mostly stuff you can get from thieving of particular characters.
Need advice please. I’ll probably acquire Paramount Presence next week, so looking for any other interesting challenge. I think there was some google doc list available showing bunch of weird stuff to acquire. Anyone knows about it and can link it?
Or what would be your proposal for next challenge other then seeking the name?
[ul][li]
did I miss something? Noman, upgraded premium lodgings, remote lodgings … is there more in Neathmas?
There’s the advent calendar which should open tomorrow. And then there’s Christmas Cards which you can send to your in-game friends. There are also several options to spend Fate, both for stories and unique items.[/li][/ul][ul][li]
how many pails of So-Called snow can one get without buying it from Urchins?
You usually get 4 or 5 pails of Lacre via Time the Healer. The advent calendar has also provided one every year, I think.[/li][/ul][ul][li]
when things usually start to happen? I assume we can start getting snow and related things on Dec, 1, while ability to spend lacre understanding appears much later, in Jan, 6. Is it so?
The Advent Calendar opens Dec 1. We usually get the first Snowed In! event (via Time the Healer) which provides Lacre after a week or two. This has never been consistent.
Mr Sacks appears in your opportunity deck from Dec 25. One card is added each day for 12 days. Once you’ve played all 12, Penstock’s Wicket opens (the place where you can get Lodgings), and stays open until Jan 31.
[/li][/ul][ul][li]
is there something else one should now about Neathmas?
Yes: it’s a lot of fun! :)[/li][/ul]
Not sure if you’ve seen this thread yet. The first post really explains everything you need to know about Neathmas in some detail!

Expeditions (not the thief ones) hand them out very occasionally. Of course, it’s entirely possible to spend the 20 supplies and still get the rubbish rewards.
