Weekly Fallen London Questions, 11/12/2017

'tis only a fortnight to Twelvetide, and here’s the thread for questions!

What’s the best use of my lacre bucket, in terms of maximizing my ToL and minimizing risk of waste? I’m starting at 0 ToL, for reference.

With a Semiotic Monocle and SotC 10, you can turn your Pail into 3 ToL. This works as long as your ToL is below 6, so you can do this twice. Depending on what you plan to use your ToL for, you’re probably best off saving any future buckets until you spend ToL and it drops below 6 once more.

If you don’t have a Semiotic Monocle and high Scholar of the Correspondence, you’re probably best off dipping souls in lacre. It can only get you to ToL 5, one point at a time, but it can’t fail and it’s cheap.

I still cannot access Fallen London via my regular browsers. This is the message I get

I’m in Flute Street, with 7 Rubbery Men favours and 40 Renown- shouldn’t there be an item somewhere? Am I just not seeing it?

My memory is a little hazy, but as I recall Flute Street has one of those places with a &quotTime Passing&quot mechanic. Different options appear at different times and you have to select a certain number of storylets to advance the time and reveal new options. I have a feeling the Renown reward doesn’t appear until you are a little way in. I may be wrong, but I think that’s it.

Nothing to do with time of day.

Just progress normally in the Flute Street carousel. Once at the end (it takes 24 actions no matter what you do), you’ll see the option to claim the 40 Renown item among all the rest of the end-choice.

Well, maybe not the time of day, but I believe that it does refer to &quottime passing in Flute Street&quot or something similar.

Edit: I just went and looked and in fact it is very much to do with the time of day, the first set of options are &quotEarly in the day&quot (Time Passing in Flute Street up to 6) and then comes &quotLate in the Day&quot (Time Passing in Flute Street 7+), and finally &quotThe End of the Day&quot where you get the final choice and items.

You had me thinking I was going mad for a minute there, Dov.

I have 11 ToL from last year and 2 buckets. What is the best course of action for me?

It would be best to keep your buckets until the Wicket opens, spend that ToL until it goes below 6 and then bring it back up via Monocle.

This is a great guide for maxing ToL:

It is best to examine the pail through a monocle, then dip a soul twice, then examine again through a monocle. This will get you to eight, and then you can use a Dreadful Surmise or wait for Mr Sacks.

…having said that, why am I not seeing any ToL increase? I used the monocle, then dipped one soul…

Do you have some left over taste from last year? (Also the numbers don’t appear, just the description of each level)

You can see ToL under your Story Quality.

Phew. I was looking at Seasonal qualities. Thank you, delicious friends!

Didn’t see any confirmation that eating it offers ONLY one level of ToL so I think it’s best to eat the first bit as it may take you to level 2 followed by two examinations. If wiki is correct and we take the average there’s a 25% success rate and splitting it will take us to 12.5% chance that you’ll gain two levels of ToL instead of one.

This may be an odd question. Are there any storylets or events which require an obscenely high stat check? For example, I know that ultimately getting Courier’s Footprint/Scholar of the Correspondence 21 requires a very high Watchful check. Are there any other comparable checks for the other stats in the same vein? Is there anything that requires a very high Persuasive, Dangerous, and/or Shadowy stat?

Poet Laureate requires persuasive 290 I believe. Shadowy and Dangerous do not have an equivalent though.

By &quotobscenely high&quot I take it to mean that a well-equipped end-game player will still fail a stat roll with some regularity (20%+), or may need to save a Mood in order to pass a stat requirement.

Poet-Laureate in the Court works like Courier’s Footprint for Persuasive, including the increasing stat requirements.

There’s an objectively obscene Persuasive check on a card in the Nadir. There are a few other checks that by comparison are merely somewhat scandalous. Off the top of my head, the Persuasive check for one of the options on One’s Public, and the Dangerous check to use a Dreadful Surmise to increase Taste of Lacre.

I am not aware of any such high-level checks for Shadowy, but robbing a drunken rat has a reward proportional to your Shadowy including equipment.

Raising Renown has increasing stat requirements. The highest mechanical benefits come at Renown 40, which does not require outrageous stats, but the highest cosmetic benefits come at Renown 50, which stretches the limits.
