Weekly Fallen London Questions, 03/09/2018

It’s always Monday somewhere in the world, so here’s this week’s quick questions thread!

I’m thinking about slowly working towards Known To All, just to give myself a long-term goal. My question is: do I need to maintain my stats at 215 after I get the associated London’s X quality, or can I let them drop? I.e. to get Known To All, would I ‘just’ need to have the four London’s X qualities, or would I need the four qualities AND all four stats still at 215?

You just need the four qualities. If they drop after you have received London’s X, that’s fine, it just checks for those qualities.

If it drops BEFORE that, though … well … that’s a hard bit of luck. It happened to me with Persuasive. Not fun.

So, if you make the mistake of using 16 Confident Smiles and ‘perhaps not’ when you fail, and then need 32 Confident Smiles, is there any way to get that many now, or are all sources limited to 20-22 or so, so you’re now stuck when it comes to that particular challenge? Asking for a friend.

I think the mysterious benefactor is unlimited, so if you chose the persuasive option you can amass hundreds of smiles over time. That’s obviously not suitable if you’re in a hurry, though, but I’m afraid I don’t know if there are other such sources.

What kind of challenge is really worth 32 second chances, though?

No challenge is worth 32 second chances, but Confident Smiles are easy enough to get below 20 that a challenge can be worth 16 Confident Smiles. And if you forget the consequences of clicking ‘perhaps not’, that turns into 32 Confident Smiles, which is quite difficult to get nowadays.

Wait, does clicking Perhaps Not lock you out of attempting it without second chances? I’m fairly certain that you can at any point just give up and do it without spending any, and the exponential cost is only relevant if you really want to absolutely guarantee success, but I use them seldom enough that I might just never have noticed.

Christmas Cards are uncapped. Most one-shot stories and access codes tend to be uncapped as well, but second chances are rarely given out by these.

While on this, the wedding options offer uncapped chances among other benefits.

Brilliant, thanks! I would hate to have to give up the Cave of the Nadir.

Thanks for all the tips on uncapped Confident Smiles! Though now I guess they might not be needed after all.

Yeah, it looks like you’re right, and that I was confused. I thought the counter was only reset by using second chances, not by failing an attempt that didn’t use second chances. But that was probably just a ‘rule’ in my own mind: Might as well accept the failure after spending 16 second chances, because 32 is too hard to get.

Are you not capped at 21 Insights/Warning Notes/Lessons/Smiles?

Also, another question: I’ve got a Judgement’s Egg. Is it just vendor trash or should I hang on to it?

It doesn’t (currently) have any uses but you might as well keep it as they’re usually Fate-locked. It’s not worth selling items unless you need the cash for something specific, anyway.

Players can have as many of these as they can get, but most storylets only hand them out if the player has 20 or less. Some storylets only hand out a second chance if the player has less than 20, so the cap ends up at 20 and not 21. But there are a few sources (as mentioned above) that offer uncapped second chances, so if a player keeps getting them from those sources and doesn’t use them, they can grow into the hundreds. I used to have hundreds of Confident Smiles back before they introduced the caps on those.

Christmas is a good chance to accumulate a lot of them!

I have seventy-something confident smiles, I think. That has been exclusively though the former benefactor card as most of the other sources are capped at 20 or 21. Closer to the content boundaries, you no longer need them as much and they start accruing.

J-

You can ask friends to send you “gifts of admiration” transferring second chances. It’s uncapped, or at least it was a couple years ago when I was prepping for Zailing.

Anybody got a link to the latest Noman tattoo guide? I’m pretty sure there was one that was more recent than NiteBrite’s, but I can’t find it anywhere. Trying to figure out how many Night-Whispers I would need these days.

More of a flavour question, but if there’s no livestock or farms in the Neath, then where do candles come from? Are they imported from the surface? Asking the Masters is probably a bad idea, so…

Hmmm, can’t find anything so I will just copy+paste something I wrote:

A Tear can give you on average 6 ToL while a Whisper (bucket) only 3. See average melting rates here.

The strategy is to try and get the Noman as late as possible, but with an enough timeframe to consume all the buckets you have.
For example, if you aren’t active, but have many buckets, it may better to get your Noman sooner even if it means an extra TtH. But that is extreme case because the card pops like crazy. Still, RNG! AND! Got to make sure you have the resources to get the Noman if you plan on getting him very late! This means at most ToL 15! Big warning because it may happen!

After that, if you have enough buckets, you can stick with those. If you want him to live more, you use a bucket (or two) followed by a Tear
http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Warm_your_Tears_of_the_Bazaar
Thing with the Tear is that you must hae at least 1 level of ToL!
Basically, this is all, really! Sounds difficult until you do it a few times. But things may change so it’s best to try and get the Noman to last years’ data for 4 TtH in case FBG decides it was too easy to get it

Plan

  1. Keep Urchin card in hand and use it as soon as it’s possible to buy buckets. Last year I grinded Notability for Favourable Circumstances to force draw the card, but it was too much anyway! :D
  2. Pile those buckets from Urchins (via regular cards or Favourable Circumstances) and enjoy the Days of Mr. Sacks while pilling ToL as well
  3. Wait for the right moment to get the Noman and make sure you have enough ToL and other requirements
  4. Use ToL on Noman card (1 ToL = 3 Noman Friend)
  5. Use Bucket or Bucket + Tear to increase ToL to 6 for bucket or 11 for Tear (max)
  6. Wait for Noman card, use ToL
  7. Repeat 5 and 6
  8. Wait, check the data and see if adjustments are required
  9. Eventually have some extra Tears to use them as emergency after Sackmas ends
    http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Give_sustenance_to_the_Noman
Not the best outcome as it gives ~12.5 NF. While a Tear can give avg of 6 ToL which is 18 NF

That’s all!
