I’m sure many of you have seen, or at least half-remember seeing, a certain Merry Gentleman. You know the one, he has a particular fondness for diamonds and visits those who are Haunted by Nightmares. As I recall, the Merry Gentleman has "eight fingers." But what I remain unsure of is whether he has eight fingers in total, or eight fingers on each hand? I realize my memories are likely wrong, but I prefer to imagine it’s the latter. It seems more… uncanny.
I’ve often wondered about that. Particularly as it might relate to his greater importance in the lore. Are there any significant historical or legendary figures with similar quantities of finger?
I always assumed he was missing his thumbs, but in hindsight he’d probably be missing his pinkies or somesuch.
There are a fair amount of tribes that cut practice finger-cutting as ways of mourning the dead and so forth, but I’m not sure that’s applicable.

That’s actually pretty interesting. I know the Merry Gentleman has connections to the Royal Beth, which in turn has connections to The Epic of Gilgamesh, which deals with themes of accepting mortality and mourning lost friends. I’m just speculating, but perhaps the Merry Gentleman is an alter-ego of the Royal Beth’s Manager? I doubt it, since I’ve never seen anyone else suggest it, and I haven’t spent enough time around the Manager to know his personality (or the number of his fingers) well enough to support that guess.
I mean, its generally accepted that they are the same person.
For example, he’s the one who can sell you the best room there.
In the Heart’s Desire ambition it’s stated quite plainly that he’s the manager of Royal Beth.
Really? That’s interesting. I’ve finished my Nemesis ambition recently, and I’m really interested in the others. Maybe I’ll make an alt someday.
Does he sell Suites? I was under the assumption you had to buy a Room and then upgrade it, but if I can go straight from my Znail-Zhell to a Suite, I’m even more interested in grinding for Antique Mysteries.
Oh, thanks for letting me know!

Nope, just the ‘regular’ room.
