Table Eleven at an 1894 Hallowmas Dinner Party

I must sincerely apologize for that outburst. I don’t know what came over me.

Greycoin is fascinated by the Tomb-Ferrets, checking on their response to commands and stimulus. Looking up from the inspection, “Never considered trainin’ tomb-weasels. Marvelous!”

Greycoin looks at Sajach, &quotNo need to apologize, yer outrage was deserved.&quot

Ah, if we are winding down a little, and the beverages are momentarily safe, we may as well open the bottle. Remind me, does mushroom wine need airing?

It needs drinkin’

Sajach takes a glass and says with a smirk “Then drink it we shall”

Greycoin raises a wineglass in a toast, &quotTa adventurous parties!&quot

To adventurous parties!

As the good people of table eleven toasts, a slender young woman approaches. She wears an elaborate domino mask in the style of a serpent, its scales as gleaming green as the almond-shaped eyes behind it; her golden-brown hair falls in elegant curves and her attire is sleek of design and a deep shimmering violet.

She smiles warmly at each person sitting at the table. Her voice is a velvety purr. &quotI beg you pardon, miladies, sirs, I do hope I am not interrupting, but I was hoping to join your little event. This table do seem the most lively here tonight. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Vena, Lady Vena technically, but either will do fine.&quot She winks playfully to Sajach. &quotI suppose that I am something of a socialite and adventuress of mysteries here in London and the Neath… among other things.&quot

As she sits, she briefly touches Pilbox’ shoulder in sympathy. &quotMy condolences for your ferrets, ms.&quot

Greycoin smiles at new arrival, “Can I get ya a drink?” Holds up the wine bottle,“Welcome ta table 11, always room fer more.”

The ferrets will do well enough, I think. Only give them some time and some bone broth and they’ll be quite themselves again. Tell us about yourself, Vena.

With the threat of mayhem dwindling for the moment, Inevitable Gremlin’s scarf relaxes a bit, uncoiling from his neck. Ignoring it, he picks up his teacup and sips. “Yes, do go on.”

[li]A pale, angular woman with ragged chestnut hair in a spade-patterned columbina and a rather full gray gown enters late, looking harried: The Distrait American. &quotThe cloakroom’s a devil to find. Evening all! I’m Eleonor Donegal, and if you’ve spent any time at University, perhaps you’ve seen me incandescing shriekily through the halls. All apologies, if so, and may this be an opportunity to meet under…&quot her grey-blue eyes flick toward the sources of various outbursts nervously, &quot…more peaceful circumstances?&quot she finishes weakly. &quotAhem.&quot

Glancing at the two new arrivals with a smile Sajach says &quotI am glad to have more guests at the table. Who knows perhaps now that we are no longer constantly distracting the maitre d’, he can come over and bring more seats to this table to accommodate. It would be nice to have the servers assisting instead of threatening us.’[li]

Vena nods graciously to Greycoin. &quotMuch appreciated. I don’t suppose we have any surface wine? I have to admit I have yet to grow fond of mushroom vintages.&quot
She turns to Pillbox, a playful smile on her lips. &quotOf course, dear, I am always willing to talk about myself, provided the rest of you will do me the courtesy of regaling my with a tale or two about yourselves in return.&quot

She pauses a moment for effect. &quotI suppose I am but a chick recently flown from the nest compared to such connoisseurs of Neathean splendour as most of yourselves. I am a fairly recent arrival to this city of dark delight. I was born to a minor family of the British Peerage on the surface.
I spend most of my time nowadays as a socialite among the high society. But my true passion is for secrets. There is little I love more than a delving into a mystery, and London and the wider Neath has been every bit the enigmatic jewel I have desired.&quot
For a mere moment there’s a glint of insidious ambition in those green eyes; then it is gone the next second, leaving only a spark of gaiety. &quotThat and hunting and raising of course, I do find the creatures of the Neath so fascinating.&quot She smiles, while playing absentmindedly with a peligin fang hanging from a necklace.

Vena’s eyes light up behind the mask. &quotOh, that was you? I wondered who that poor girl was. But I have to say, you look much better now than at that day. Charmed to meet you.&quot

Servers do that?

Greycoin comes back from the bar with a bottle of surface wine for Vena, as Eleonor is introducing herself.
“Ah, Eleonor, I was lookin’ forward ta meeting ya ‘ere. My name is Jo Greycoin. Appolonia mentioned dat you were comin’.”
Greycoin pours wine for both the new arrivals from the new bottle before adding, “Don’t spend much time at da University – but I’m sure dat I’d remember ya if I ‘ad.”

&quotLikewise! And what lovely jewelry!&quot She nods at Vena’s pendant, &quotIt was this or normal school back home, I suppose. But of course, of all the languages I might’ve studied professionally, I pick the one that makes it quite impossible to grow out my hair, and necessitates the use of paints and powders to fill in my eyebrows… Still, I’m available to instruct at Orphanages. Sajach knows, he’s invited me twice already. Quite an inventive lot, his children. Bright futures!&quot She grins crookedly, revealing a snaggletooth, &quotMetaphorically of course. I’d rather they not combust at quite the same rate to which I find myself prone.&quot She spies Jo and turns to shake hands. &quotAppolonia speaks highly of you! We rode here in my Landau, as she was hesitant to come unescorted, and she was saying she thinks you quite clever. &quot

Seajack turns to Eleonor and says “Thank you so much for that. It was quite a treat for the children.” Turning to the rest of the table he says “Now, earlier we discussed confessions. Jo and I both wished to become better acquainted with the other guests at this table before confessions. However I think that I have a good enough idea of who is at this table. If everyone else is ready, I would be happy to start the Hallowmas confessions.”
