I can now confirm that subcards (such as The Smuggler’s Grave) do not prevent you from drawing their parent card (in this case, An Implausible Penance.) Unsurprisingly, taking that same option again wastes the parent card.
Apologies if someone else already tested and reported on this.
A Visit, however does not generate subcards for your acquaintances.
Hang on - when was this tested? I feel like I backed out of a Visit to the Wry Functionary a couple of months ago and managed to jump straight to his subcard. may have remembered wrongly, of course
EDIT: As Parelle says, you indeed lose the Visit if you choose an acquaintance and then back out of it.

Let me explain what I meant, as I phrased it badly.
On a Visit, I click the Repentant Forger. I travel to Veilgarden and see his visiting options. I then click "perhaps not" and lose the card. I did this a few days ago b
