The Fifth Tournament of the Sanguine Ribbon Society is now officially open for signups! The 29 contestants in the previous tournament fought a combined 140 lethal sparring bouts, so I hope you’re ready for some PvP action, mayhem, and mind games. Ready to meet some new delicious friends, and (temporarily) kill them? Are you on a first-name basis with the Boatman, or do you have enough Sanguine Ribbons to stretch from Wolfstack to Watchmaker’s Hill? Regardless, if you’re looking for extra excitement in Fallen London, look no farther.
What is the Sanguine Ribbon Society (SRS)?
- The SRS was created by Mike Hawk as a way to connect Fallen Londoners who are interested in Lethal Sparring Bouts and earning Sanguine Ribbons, and also for hosting tournaments such as this one. The SRS is purely player-run, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Failbetter Games. There are currently over 80 active players in the SRS, and anyone with a Black Ribbon can join simply by adding their profile information to the Leaderboard.
What are the rules?
- The complete rules for the Fifth Tournament can be found on the rules page of the SRS document; please review them carefully before signing up.The rules will be very similar to those of the Fourth Tournament, with a few changes to make things more interesting. [/li][li]The basics: you can challenge any other participant to a Lethal Sparring Bout, but can only spar with a given participant once. If you win, you get either two points (if you initiated the challenge) or one point (if you accepted a challenge). You keep track of your points on the tournament log page. The goal, of course, is to get the most points.[/li][li]There will be a limit to how many participants you can challenge (which will be based on the total number of signups), and there will also be a cut-off date; both will be announced at the start of the tournament.
What can I win?
- Fame, glory, and cash! The champion and the runner-up will both be entered into the Sanguine Hall of Fame, and will receive 600 and 300 First City Coins from the SRS Treasury, respectively. Their titles will be appended to their names on the Leaderboard. The winner will also receive eight Surprise Packages, and the runner-up four. All prize Coins and funding for Surprise Packages comes from generous donations to the SRS treasury.[/li][li]All other participants except the lowest-scoring one who complete the maximum number of allowed Lethal Sparring Bouts will also receive Coins; again, based on the total number of participants, and to be announced at the start. They will also receive one Surprise Package.[/li][li]The lowest-scoring participant who completes the maximum number of allowed bouts will receive the title "Wooden Spoon" and be entered into the Sanguine Hall of Fame, and will receive 1000 rats. Participants will be encouraged to send this player rats, as well. For that "lucky" un-winner, Ratmas will be coming early this year.[/li][li]All participants who complete the maximum allowed number of sparring bouts will receive an exclusive Fifth Tournament badge icon, which will be displayed on their Leaderboard entry. Participants are also welcome to use it here in their forum signatures (and possibly as flair on the Fallen London subreddit, TBD).
How do I sign up?
- First, you have to be a member of the Sanguine Ribbon Society. All you need to join is to have a Black Ribbon (which is required in Fallen London to participate in Lethal Sparring Bouts). If you’re not a member already, just head over to the Leaderboard page and add yourself to it, along with a link to your Fallen London character profile.[/li][li]In the ‘Applying for’ column of the Leaderboard, just type in ‘Yes’. Congratulations, you’re now officially signed up for the Fifth Tournament!
When does the tournament begin?
- Signups for the tournament will end at the stroke of midnight (EDT) on July 1. [/li][li]The tournament will commence a day or two later, and will be announced here in the forum and on the Fallen London subreddit. [/li][li]This should avoid the actual tournament conflicting with the upcoming mayoral election (which last year started on June 18), in case there are any new mechanics in effect. Celebrate the win of your chosen candidate (or focus your rage after a bitter loss) with our own little festival of strength and skill!
Feedback and suggestions are welcome, and feel free to post here or contact me directly (either via PM or in-game) with any questions about the tournament or the SRS. Please note that the rules are subject to change prior to signup cut-off date; if there are changes, I will update the official Fifth Tournament rules page and note them in the announcement when the event starts. For now, you can indicate your interest by signing up as described above, and keep an eye out here and/or on the Fallen London subreddit for the official start date announcement. Until then, keep your blades sharp and your wits sharper.
EDIT: Signups are now closed. I will finalize the rules and prepare the tournament log, and will make a separate announcement to officially begin the tournament.
