I haven’t seen the shepherding souls card in several days, which is distressing, as I was counting on it to raise some of my connections prior to those connections being transferred into the renown/favours system. Has Failbetter removed it from the deck as they make their own preparations for the transfer? Or have I simply fallen into disfavour with the RNG gods?
When in doubt, rng.
(I’ve seen the card a few times recently)
I figured. Thanks!
(Curses, RNG gods!)
This is kind of off topic, but does anyone know if the rewards on the card will stay the same when the final renown conversions come? The last option for 1000 souls and 100 contracts will give 15 favors in total and I feel it in my bones that Failbetter will be spoil sports and nerf that into the ground.
It will most likely become a luck challenge, but yes, its getting some sort of nerf (unless the rng manifests itself in reality)
Why would it become a luck challenge?
Honestly, considering you have to pay Fate to unlock it and the material components are 80 echoes by themselves, it would be nice if they left it as is.
Sorry, I mean rng determines between 1 and 5 favours. No a challenge.
I think it will remain the same and be 5 Favours for all.
It’s 40 Echoes worth of materials. You’re getting 15 Favours. That’s a return of 2 2/3 Echoes per Favour. I don’t think any source gives that many Echoes in return, so it seems pretty fair. Frankly, it doesn’t seem like all that great an option.
I can’t see any reason to decrease the amount of Favours given.
Yeah 40 E for 15 favors is pretty bad. It’s true it only costs 1 action but that doesn’t make up for it.
If you value an action at 1.64 E (affair of the box), then it costs 41.64 E to get 15 favors, which is 2.776 E per favor or equivalent to 15 actions that cost 1.136 E for one favor. Personally I don’t use the cards that cost an echo or more for a favor (like the alluring accomplice card, or the grubby/winsome urchin cards), and this would be worse.
Still, there are other benefits than the favors, right? I’m not a fate using player so I don’t have these options.

I use the favors for pure story reasons, meaning I use them to gain Renown and get the renown items and the corresponding flavor text and the text of the storylet. The Renown 40 items, in particular, are earth shattering in the revelations they give about the Fallen London setting.
RNG, as someone else said. I got the card twice, and just finished playing it a second time a few minutes ago.

Yes, there is also the benefit of menace reduction. It’ll be especially interesting to see how the changes to "A Public Lecture" interact with the changes to this card. If "A Public Lecture" remains a good source of favors (perhaps with an increase in the amount of Suspicion it generates), the ability to wipe away that Suspicion with a single card will be useful. But even with that benefit, 15 favors isn’t a great reward. Perhaps they’ll add a few echoes worth of item rewards to the card as well, or a Making Waves boost.
The only thing I think the options on the shepherd card need are a bump to “adrift on a sea of misery.” I think it’s an altruistic public service and should probably be treated in a similar light to the charity options on the soft-hearted widow card in terms of their societal effects.
I’m just gonna say it’d be real sad if they balanced it by making it not wipe all your menaces. It’s basically the coolest thing ever.
Oh, that would be awful.
15 favours seems like a lot, but before the conversion the card gave 1500 CP of connections, so this would be in keeping, really. (Also, it helps keep it level with spirifage, which still has the advantages of being more straightforward in its profitability and not requiring an opportunity card.)
That would be balancing it by removing the point of it. It’d be like nerfing the Spirifer option by making it not give you money, to keep favours.
I just used “A True and Dedicated Shepherd of Souls”, and I got 4 Church favours for it. (Not sure if the amount of Constable favours were changed–I had 5 at the time, so I only got 2 more).
I got 4 church and 3 constable favours.(have both zero before)

Before the church/bohemian conversion, I would get 5 constables favours for a true and dedicated shepherd of souls. Has this changed?
