I’ve just passed through the gate with the Grieve ending. If someone could message me the Hate and “Who is Salt” endings, I would be very thankful.
I have gone NORTH. I found the gate. I hurt my hand. I said "nuts to this" and returned home. I drank a bunch of cider. I contemplated the complexity of this process given that I’m not as attached to my head as I used to be. I wondered whether cider would fix that. I questioned whether it would reattached my head or cause me to grow a new one. I took off my head and put on my Judgemental Hat. It was, understandably, perturbed. My hand still hurts.
That’s my third character to have made that trip, although the first to survive. Does anyone know if you get to keep your head if you quit Seeking entirely? I may not be as attached to it as I used to be but I do like at least having the option of having a mouth. And eyes. And a brain.
Is there any point to giving up the search for the Name after turning back from the Gate with the Seven-Fold Knock? All it does is eliminate all your hard earned trophies and Seeking qualities.
Not really, although there’s no reason to resume seeking, so your candles and SMEN are nothing but trophies of your mistakes.
Mistakes? I assure you, all my terrible choices are precisely calculated. Throwing ~11k echoes of Fluke-Core down a well for three sentences of unique text was entirely worth it :P
It does indeed mean you lose your hard won trophies, which is unfortunate. However, dropping out of Seeking at the end might have a few advantages:
- I’m not sure if deciding to quit Seeking removes Obscurity (assuming you didn’t take the shortcut bypassing this quality). If so, this is a significant reason, as with Obscurity you pretty much crippled your character (no profession, Notability, Destiny, Ambition, tattoos).[/li][li]This is a Fate-free way to get rid of the Stains on your Soul, which will allow you to be able to sell your soul (this might be either good or bad for you). Having no soul allows you, for example, to buy the 5-card Sanctum much much more cheaply during Christmas.
I didn’t stay back, but I’m fairly certain there’s no way to remove obscurity once you have it, even if you quit seeking.
Bit of a silly question, but if you sell your soul and then regain it (e.g. by using Fate) is it still possible to Seek? A devil’s offering me a temptingly sizeable diamond, but I don’t want to completely rule out the possibility of ruining my own life further down the line.
Yes, but you’ll have to get it back before you can get any candles.
You can also, in fact, even sell your soul after starting to Seek. Fate is needed for that as well though, either to play through Flint for some absolutions or to sell it at Hallowmas for some other temptingly rare items. Doing the latter is definitely a great idea and has absolutely no risks involved.
Quickest way to dump Society connections?

You can become Closest To: Society and then break it off. If you only need to get rid of a small amount, you could go rat-catching in Watchmaker’s Hill or do some Suspicious Loitering.
It’s been a bit since I had to dump connections for Winking Isle, so I might be misremembering, but I think this is what I did:
If you’re at or above ~32, cash in favors at the empress’s court. Between 15-31, cash in favors at the shuttered palace. After that, go ratcatching to dump the rest.
The KNIGHT OF FEASTS opportunity card has a fun little option ("Eat. Just eat.") to tank your Society connections, if you want something a little more Seeking-related.
Lat thing I did was to get rid of documents, gossip, and that kind of stuff. It just says I need Connected: Society at less than 7 to move on. Thanks for the hints. Even if I do see this through and this character dies, I’ll make a new one. This game is interesting.
Funnily enough, I’m not near Winking Isle, but my society connections are already at or near zero. Seeking really tends to tank the quality.
Hi, you know how to get your soul back without FATE?
Bundles of oddities. You need exactly 200. The option from “one’s public” and, when you’re at zee, “Raise the black flag” are the best options to find it.
Thank you. I will try to get it back…
Ahhh. Just traded my Connected: Society 100 in, with the Bazaar Lodgings card. Now I’m getting close to 11 Notability and a step closer to the island. Just got to try and keep my C:S stat down while I grind echoes for another 6 months or so :P
I’m thinking about holding off on going after St E’s until I see the updates the devs have promised, though. If there’s really only one more update left in ambitions and they come out relatively soon, I’d hate to be locked out by obscurity. One more card game, and then I’ll go NORTH…
