RNG, Let’s Never Fight Again

I just drew three Wounds-wiping Opportunity cards in a row, right as I was studying the Correspondence at the University, and a Mood-granting card. It was right after I woke up in real life, too, so my Actions were capped. The odds of that happening are utterly ludicrous, and I love it.

For those wondering, I had been saving the Shepherd of Souls card since I drew it yesterday. I used it right before I started the session, since I had a bunch of other Menaces in addition to Wounds. I then drew “A river of blood”, which is a spectacularly rare card that also heals all your Wounds. I used that once I was one potential studying session away from the River. I then progressed far enough to start requiring a Mood, and suddenly drew “A dusty bookshop”. After I once again got too close to the Boatman, I drew the Shepherd card again! Thank God I’ve made a habit of stockpiling 2000 of every item before I start selling any.

I could probably get even more out of this with Darkdrop Coffee, but I prefer to keep nonrenewable stuff like that forever given the choice. It’s certainly rarer to get than a Mood card, given enough time.

For anyone wondering, “A river of blood” is Fate-locked as it requires a Slavering Dream-Hound.

Yeah, this was actually my first time drawing it. I find it interesting that it outright removes the Wounds quality, rather than decreasing it to zero. Failbetter evidently started favoring the latter as time went on.[li]

By the way, is this one of the oldest pieces of content still in the game? I remember someone, possibly you, saying that it was introduced when Wounds were added.

It definitely wasn’t me; I haven’t been around anywhere near that long. (And I’d be surprised if menaces were created after the Theological Husbandry expansion.)

Also, what do you mean by removing the Wounds quality? Do you mean setting it to zero?

Yes, it didn’t have the decreasing progress bar that accompanies a decreasing stat, so I think it was actually set to 0.

Furthermore, instead of saying “You no longer have any of this: Wounds”, it said “Your ‘Wounds’ quality has gone!”.

Anyway, the “A river of blood” card was apparently added for a short while immediately after Wounds became a thing, as a way to ease people into the mechanic. It was later added back into the game as a sort of easter egg for people with a Slavering Dream-Hound. It didn’t require that initially.[li][/li][li]

Cider does the same thing. It’s a nice, subtle way of reflecting just how powerful the healing effect is.
