Results of fate-locked story survey (Sept 2017)

I have finally done an evaluation of the results for the fate-locked story survey posted about two weeks ago. I did a pretty detailed post over on reddit, here is the link if you are interested.

We’ve got a total of 147 votes at the time I’m writing this. This is about the same number as during our first survey back in February. I’ve changed the way to rank stories compared to last time: Because now there are five options to rate the stories, distribution functions start to emerge and it makes sense to use a little statistics on the results. Story quality is now calculated based on the average voted value. Possible values ranged from 1 (&quotExceptional&quot) to -1 (&quotDidn’t like it&quot), so stories with an average above zero were liked by the majority of players, while stories with an average below zero were not. For completeness I have also added variance, where a smaller value (close to zero) shows that most players gave similar votes for a story while a larger value indicates that players disagreed about the quality of the story.

Most Popular Stories [ul][li]Lost in Reflection (average vote 0.78)[/li][li]Flint (average vote 0.75)[/li][li]HOJOTOHO! (average vote 0.70)[/li][li]The Gift (average vote 0.68)[/li][li]The Twelve-Fifteen from Moloch Street (average vote 0.67)[/li][li]The Empress’ Shadow (average vote 0.66)[/li][/ul] No surprises here. The five highest voted stories from February are still up there, with &quotHOJOTOHO!&quot being a new entry at number 3. Considering the many positive comments for this story, it’s not really a surprise to find it there. After these six stories there’s a bit of a gap but the average votes are still really good for more than half of the stories.
As before, &quotSecrets Framed in Gold&quot is the story dividing players most. Interestingly, &quotThe Rubbery Murders&quot is a close second because while still getting very few votes in general, it got two &quotExceptional&quot-votes this time.

Least Popular Stories [ul][li]The Rubbery Murders (average vote -0.54)[/li][li]The Spinning of the Wheels (average vote -0.27)[/li][li]A Long Lost Daughter (average vote -0.18)[/li][li]The Last Dog Society (average vote -0.17)[/li][li]Discernment (average vote -0.16)[/li][li]A Court of Cats (average vote -0.14)[/li][/ul] Again, there’s a bit of a gap after these six stories and &quotRubbery Murders&quot is out there by a mile compared to everything else. Both &quotDiscernment&quot and &quotDaughter&quot had been voted at higher quality last time while the others are not really surprising based on February’s results. Keep in mind that the negative values here are much lower, so &quotRubbery Murders&quot is probably still the only story that should be avoided.

From one of the Reddit links:

I can’t speak for anyone else (and did not actually vote in this survey), but the opportunity card is not the primary benefit of buying Inconvenienced by Your Aunt in my opinion; the additional option (not sure if this is visible-but-locked if you haven’t done the story or not) it makes available on the Time Passing in Office carousel in Port Carnelian is.

The Time Passing in Office option is definitely an extra bonus. Over the past year or two I’ve spent less than a day in Port Carnelian, just to get the Society 40 Renown item, and the rest of the time was primarily in London. Having one fewer garbage card and a chance of action refreshes is by far the main draw for me.

I have done the story but I still wasn’t aware of that additional option (and apparently my beta-testers weren’t either … at least no one mentioned this before ;)) Thanks for letting me know!

I always mean to spend some time in Port Carnalian but somehow I never get around to it. Well, one of these days … hopefully …
