One need not go NORTH

The Drowned Master is the topic of much discussion in London. However, there need not be discussion.

One need not go where zailors are advised to not go.

There are people in London who know the name already, or have heard it.

An accurate but unreliable bet is asking Seekers. More than half(citation needed) have heard the name. Remember.

A less accurate, but safe way is asking those who are from earlier cities. (Cough Cough- The Duchess)

Why go to a horizon of Judgement and Death, when one can learn the name in other ways? End this madness.

The true NAME, my dear former pupil is not like something you can write down. It is written in 7 letters of the Correspondence, and our bodies, minds and souls will burn up like a candle even if it is engraved on your body. It is only by going through the tortuous rituals that you may understand the name, what the Drowned Man was, what it went through, and what he is now.

Also, it is not enough to merely learn the NAME, but to use it for Hate or Grief.

… Oh. I was just saying, as this could change something. Anything, involving the curiosity of those who seek.
… Do you know of any ways for one to understand Correspondence? I know that it could potentially burn someone completely, but it should be possible, right?

…?

You can always increase your Correspondence quality, but for Seeking it requires a transformation into a…well, he can explain it better.

You will burn, its just a manner of how.

I heard about the business with the, er, decapitation. Though, considering the context, I’ll just refer to it, at times, as “de-wicking”.

One does not know the Name unless one goes North. One can hear of the Name, one can learn the Name, but North lies the knowledge of the Name.

Thomas Nagel, in his &quotWhat is it like to be a bat?&quot summarizes it very well.

…hm. Interesting. Given that one can not write the name down- at least, not currently- you may have a point.

To be fair, the Name can be written down. We’ve seen it written down before (albeit in only a future that will likely never pass). Presumably, it’s a very hollowing and hallowing experience.

Seeking isn’t just about finding the name. Most Seekers will have a chance to find out the former identity of Mr Eaten in, give or take, eleven days. The Name, more precisely, is beside the point. It’s about what the Name represents - the identity that it was founded on.

You scare me, all of you.

I have already solved this question earlier this century.

Oh, my. I just realized (after 8+ years playing FL) that business of the knives and candles in the killing game of Knife and Candle is a reference to the &quotdewicking&quot required to go NORTH.

Though it could even be that the Chapel of Lights and Knife and Candle emulate a higher crime, since we (essentially) know that Irons joined the Bazaar in self-imposed exile for it.

Oh. Did I spark those realizations? Crap.

Nightmares has increased to 15-Raving!
Watchful has increased to 100- Sagacious!

I have to add that i’m very proud of my last sentence, since it contains a pun, a reference, and two answers.

What’s the point of cancer studies? To know how to treat it and what to do in order to shorten the risks. That’s what one will do with the knowledge rather than expose themselves to the disease, right?

Seeking The Name is a cancer of self-motivation, as some people can reasonably see it. No wonder, why not everyone finds such an enormous investment of personal time and efforts to be personally pleasant.

But this is simply a game, so it’s OK if others do. Because this is only a matter of taste in the end.

Thomas Nagel came up with a great thought experiment, which doesn’t require physical transformation into a bat in order to grasp the concept of qualia.

The same with Seeking. It can be easily comprehended that Seekers experience things, unprocurable for sane and unobsessed. The comprehension itself gives a freedom from all the reasons to undergone the great woe. Then it turns out to be very easy to permanently reject to whole idea of self-destructive transformation and move along.

So one shouldn’t know the Name unless he actually wants to.

The concept of qualia and the knowledge of “being a bat” aren’t the same thing, they are as different as the concept of knowing something and actually knowing this thing (ex : I don’t have to be a dog to understand that being a dog is not like being a human ; does that mean I know what being a dog is ? No.). Hence why I’m not sure your comparison here is relevant, although I like seeing the word qualia.
