What are some effective ways to increase notability? I’m looking to move up to being a conjurer from trickster, at the moment. My qualities are, at base, at:
Watchful - 101
Shadowy - 69
Dangerous - 71
Persuasive - 103
Influence - 3
The fastest way at your stage is probably side conversion of Tier 3 items. Make sure you have at least fifty of one of them and then go round and round.
Oh, there is also storylet “Life of mind” on Empress’ Court, provided you have access there and are not expelled.
The party from "A Polite Invitation" can be a good source of MW. A Salon or Orphanage is an effective way of gaining large amounts of MW at once, as is upconverting Tales of Terror!! to Implications and then Incanabula.
(Also, your profile link in your signature is out of date - it should be Gwendoline%20Kensworth.)
I just recently moved up from Watcher to Agent, and my base stats are 112/110/113/114. Acquiring Notability is only possible through the "Visit from Slowcake’s Amanuensis" card, which requires being a Person of Some Importance. From that card, you can petition for a larger entry in the Exceptionals if you have Making Waves (20 - Bizarre - Dreaded - Respectable + 4*Notability). Once you have Notability, you can draw the "An unsigned message" card, which allows you to join a second-tier profession if your Notability is at least 2. As for where to get Making Waves, inviting other players for private dinners is the best repeatable MW source, and if you’re out of free evenings you can resort to grinding side-conversion of Zee-Stories, Tales of Terror, Compromising Documents, Whisper-Satin Scraps, Journals of Infamy, and so forth.
Also, Conjurer? Really? I don’t know why anyone would want a Horrid Imp, the things have simply no manners at all.

My overlong post on the subject:

Assuming you don’t want to read the whole thing (and who would?), I would suggest
- side-conversion of tier-3 (50-pence) items
- inviting other players to Private Suppers
- using the Polite Invitation

Silly question, but I see side-conversion coming up a lot. What exactly is that?
Most of the 50-pence items can be batch-converted, 50 at a time, to 51 of another 50-pence item by clicking on them in your inventory. If you step through each such item in turn, after 13 actions, you’ll end up with 1 more of each than you started with, plus some Making Waves (because three or four of the actions provide some). This process is usually called side-conversion; it’s also a good way to quickly gain the resources you might need to convert up if, for instance, you need Stolen Kisses but have no Compromising Documents.
Within your inventory, items are seperated into multiple categories. Some of these, such as wines, rumour, and academic, have a direct progression through conversion, trading in a lot of the cheaper item for an equivelant value’s worth of the next one up. Most of the fifty pence items can be converted to fifty pence items of a different category. For example, fifty tales of terror can be swapped for fifty one Compromising Documents, which can then me converted into fifty one Memories of Light. Several of these actions give a few CP of making waves, and since the conversion cycle loops around endlessly, some use this method to grind making waves.
Edit: Beaten by three minutes. Damn.

specifically:
Brilliant Souls can be converted into Tales of Terror
which can be converted into Compromising Documents (giving some Making Waves)
which can be converted to Memories of Light
which can be converted to Zee-Stories
which can be converted to Strangling Willow Absinthe (giving some Making Waves)
which can be converted to Whisper-Satin Scraps
which can be converted to Journals of Infamy
which can be converted to Correspondence Plaques
which can be converted to Visions of the Surface
which can be converted to Mysteries of the Elder Continent (giving some Making Waves)
which can be converted to Incendiary Gossip
which can be converted to Memories of Distant Shores (giving some Making Waves)
which can be converted to Brilliant Souls, completing the cycle.
All of the making waves gains are randomized, but on taking 50 of one of those items all the way around the cycle gives on average a little over 1 CP of making waves per action (I saw 1.7 MW/action in the guide, that’s pretty good!) (and one 50-pence item per action). All you need to get started is 50 of one of those items. (Though it’s nice to have more just so the grind is a little easier, you can use the Try Again button and don’t have to keep searching for items in your inventory.)

In addition to all the other advice:
Increase your BDR (Bizarre/Dreaded/Respectable) as high as you can. Every point will help you immensely.
