Vake hunting. So I don’t NEED night whispers to get to Parabola, I need them to make the chorister’s bomb. But once I make the chorister’s bomb (and presumably use it), the cost of getting to Parabola drops significantly.

I have made it to 200 watchful! Got my smock and am now an extraordinary intellect. Now I need to get the prestige of my lab up so I can get to those meetings with the Dean. I can see a lot of disambiguating eoliths in my future.
My ambition alt got the last of the Night Whispers he needed to make the bomb at the recent Fruits of the Zee festival. Mr. Wines was giving the things away to people who helped created messed-up, bad romances. It’s a pity you missed out on that.
I did get one. I went for two good and one bad. If only I’d known…
BTW, I am looking for advice on spending fate again. My birthday is coming up and I will buy some for a present to myself. I’m considering extraordinary stories that I have missed out on. There’s such a huge back catalogue I’m notsure what to choose!
Any suggestions for a scientifically inclined naturalist, explorer and Vake hunter?
There is a list here that goes up to the present (update at top):
If you’ve not done it, The Gift is considered one of the best. Access to Others praised for quality or subsequent advantage (card, for instance) are Written in the Glim, Cricket, Anyone, Por Una Cabeza, Flint (very expensive but twice the usual length and gives a new overzee destination), The 12:15 from Moloch Street, Hojotoho! For all the Saints, Cut with Moonlight (access to Mirrorcatch boxes), The Empress’s Shadow.
I can’t advise on very recent stories due to a backlog in playing…

Thank you! I have played the 4 most recent, as that’s when I decided to sign up. All most interesting. The Carpenter’s Granddaughter was my first, and the best for my character’s roleplay, but all have been interesting. It seems like they all have a 62.5 reward, and usually some other effect. Glad to hear Written in the Glim is worth it, as it gives out a night whisper, but I was unsure whether that was a good enough reason for me.
I’m also considering Upward from the Bone Market. Seems in character. (Fate locked but not an extraordinary story)

Hello, I’m still interested in advice. Meradine’s list was somewhat helpful but spoilerish if I look too deeply at the links, so I have been cautious.
What I would like is fate-locked options that are worth it for a monster hunting academic. Could be exceptional stories, could be fate locked options like Flute Street.
I have bought Flute St, very pleased with that. I did one of the fate locked forgotten quarter expeditions, and it didn’t seem very special. I did the Aunt/Mr Wines thing but so far the cards just hurt me. Went shroom hopping once, which was fun. Bought a lab extension, so I can now have 2 students at a time, which is nice. Things that open up new story options are especially good from my PoV.
Season of Explorations seems suited to my character. Pricy to get all 3 AND written in the Glim, though I, hmm, just might. That’s 180 fate which is a lot for me. But I am having a big zero birthday in lockdown, so maybe I should treat myself. That would be my outer spending limit. But also Flint, Cut with Moonlight and Where You and I must Go seem good, so narrowing it down is hard.
so…still looking for advice to settle my plans.

Monster-wise a few ideas:
I thought A Miniature Menace was a fun little story. It’s certainly apropos for a monster hunter. Being a POSI, however, you will not find it challenging at all.
The Gift is also of interest to those who are keen to study monsters. And is a good story as well!
If you desire to make your own monsters, for academic or other purposes, I strongly recommend you acquire The Formula for Empyrean Redolence.
The Rat-Catcher is a good story if you’re looking to hunt monsters.
On stories related to monster research:
The Blemmingan Affair - mycological linguistics
Flint - rudimentary Elder Continent research
The Pentecost Predicament - primate conflict
The Clayman’s Arm - ethics on Neath bionic research
Written in the Glim - physiology of ceiling dwellers, basic pay of astro-entomologists
Daylight - monster hunting
Caveat Emptor - monster seduction
The Thing that came in from the Fog - monster psychology
Leviathan - in-depth verification of paleontological artefacts

Oooh, some great ideas. Thanks, Sapho & Alexander & Kenshi. I forgot to mention I got empyrean redolence, definitely love it. (My ocelot is the best. The dream hound is nice too. The owl is… weird)
So, decided: my lockdown big birthday is Friday and I will buy fate to the approx $value of my age which is frighteningly high. (Suffice it to say that I have actually used punchcards for real working programming.) I shall stop fretting about which stories to buy, as they are not going away. This is not my only chance ever, though I doubt I’ll spend so much in one shot again.
I will probably start with Written in the Glim, and decide more from there. There’s a season of explorations which sounds interestingly antarctic/arctic and I’m hoping it might have a touch of Frankenstein.
Of course there will be a new story out soon, too. Lots to do. I am madly in love with this game.
In the continuing adventures of Prof Blueleg, she has FINALLY gained access to Parabola, via a peculiar series of events that included impersonating Mr Veils and biting Mr Fires. And finally realising that the Masters are NOT AT ALL HUMAN!
As is her nature, she immediately went off hunting for unusual beasts and has caught warblers and albatross. Found the Dome of Scales, the Chessboard, the Waswood and the Viric Jungle. Much excitement! So much to do! Choose a side in the war?
Fortifying the camp is the hard part. Two parabola linen outfilts, and then the next step involves either a fate locked companion or a huge number of rookery passwords or pulsating amber. Ouch. I had hoped my Whitsun animals could help, but it seems not yet. .
Since I also need a lot of gunpowder to upgrade the lab, I think I will focus there, Perhaps with Hallowmas coming up, a new companion might appear?
I have a feeling that maybe I should not have sold the Cave of the Nadir location to become a Preserver of London. I could have bought so many things! Money is hard, and the wiki grinds assume you have very high stats and advanced arts. But then, it was a one-off.
I seem to be making this thread into my personal game journal. I’d hoped there would be other people in a similar situation. Which makes me wonder & worry how FL is doing on attracting new players.
Anyway, I have still not spent any of the fate I bought for my birthday. I’m so busy with the new (to me) content in the railway and Parabola that I haven’t felt compelled. Though I am getting a bit sick of grinding for steel and improved lab equipment.
My short list:
I think my best choice is the big ticket items, since I’m unlikely to have this much fate at one time again.
I want to wait for Hallowmas, though. I might need something there. I’m really hoping for a companion to help my Parabolan camp defences,
I recently played Tauroktonos and found it heavy going; it’s one of those stories where making a decision in favour of one action cuts out three or four others. It happens often enough that there’s always a sense you’re missing chunks of the story. There’s also a strong element of body horror and some morally difficult decisions to make. You may find that the temple section is less prominent than you might hope.
The other choice I have unpleasant memories of is Where You and I Must Go, but it’s too long ago now to be able to nail down the reasons. Just that it was one where I thought “no need to ever go there again”, whereas some ES are such bright little jewels, you want to enjoy them all over again.
What has surprised me, reading this thread, is that you’ve dived in to the content that is really for very late stage players, so requiring high stats and lots of treasure, and producing lots of failure (I assume) while apparently neglecting a fair amount of mid-level and lesser late level material. I’ve been here for three or four years now and still have a lot of the low level late material to mop up – even some mid-level stuff.
There used to be someone on here who encouraged new Netheans to take things slowly and enjoy. Let me echo that here.
Name me another game, where you need at least A YEAR of playing at maximum speed/efficiency to see most of it’s content. FL is incredibly slow as it is.
I think that’s the point of the advice. It’s a mistake to try and push the river. It’s conceived to be played over brief periods several times a day. When I joined, the number of words was said to be well over a million, and it must be way more than that now. It just isn’t a wham-bam experience.
I don’t THINK I am pushing too hard. Except maybe for becoming a preserver of London.
I joined at Whitsun. I am missing some content by choice, as my character is much more interested in beast hunting than Mahogany Hall and newspapers. I probably should go do those to get my shadowy up.
If there’s anything significant you think I should look at, please let me know. I’m good at procuring and breeding beasts and duelling. I’ve been Port Carnelian governor enough to get restored to court. I’ve committed multiple heists and brawled like mad.
Mostly my next goal is ambition-driven. What is the next step? Aim for that. I laugh to see people talk about their hundreds of night whispers when I struggled for weeks to get three for the chorister’s bomb. Parabolan defenses are my current big sticking point in the ambition. After Hallowmas I will consider grinding for the 600 echoes worth of items, if I don’t get a helpful companion. Meanwhile I thought I’d try to get to Ealing, but it’s slow going. And the RNG is NOT on my side: last time I made railway steel I got a whole 3 pieces. Ugh.
Shadow grinding is the slowest among the main attributes. My alt is currently building his shadowy and watchful skill for a coming trip in the Old Downey. While helping the downtrodden communities of the Spite, he secured a steady flow of mourn candle supply. This would be his key to hire rubbery guards for his Parabolan stronghold, and building his personal zubmarine. A part time job at the L.B. factory would be his preferable mean to save Fourth-City echo, and picking up shadowy skill along the way, as he won’t have to worry about the risk of getting injured or having nightmares.

I decided to buy Flint and All Things Must End, because of new zailing destinations, and also because I know I will never otherwise buy Flint. So expensive. Holding on to the rest for Hallowmas, and other decisions after.
I haven’t played them yet, and may not do so for a while. Sometimes you get stuck in a grind and want something different for a day, so I’m saving them up.
I do also heed Meradine’s advice on not going too fast. I’ve decided I need to check out what Tribute is for, and move on with the affair of the box - which should help with the shadowy.
But lab upgrades and Hallowmas are the big deals right now.
