January Exceptional Story: The Stolen Soiree

I love this. What an addition to the lore!

Structurally, I particularly liked the fairy unusual requirement to choose between two qualities, each giving a different slant on the events. It was refreshing, because it meant there was a genuine chance of failing the checks. There were multiple instances throughout the story where the choice made a difference, and I did find myself largely pursuing the preferred quality (shadowy). I also appreciated the option of popping back to London to deal with business.

The island setting was very atmospheric – I wonder if there is any chance of an encounter with the Giant Crustaceans? (Yum! crab claws!)

There was a stronger than usual sense that the story’s framework has more branches than a player can experience in one play-through. For example, because of my choices and the time limit, I only discovered indirectly who else was at the party. The devil and his friend were like people seen vaguely from a distance, but there were clearly others that never really hove into view.

As mentioned above, I also lacked the quality linked to the Affable Explorer and had that option greyed out. Perhaps he needs to be an ex-lover to trigger that branch? Some of the later choices vis-à-vis the heiress seemed a little OTT for someone my character had only just met, so wanting to max out the quality warred with the logic for me there.

Definitely one of the good ones, and a new writer worth following.
