Is it just me, or are these home comforts rubbish?

Oh, the terrible human cost of moving the basalt gymnasium into my home! Those newly dead and disfigured labourers weren’t cheap. Neither were all the legal documents necessary to acquire my library. So imagine my miffedness when I discovered that the reward for my hard work (and, to a lesser extent, the hard work of other, less important individuals) was a poxy +1 to Watchful and Dangerous, and not to Respectable and Dreaded, as I had hoped.

Does anybody else feel a bit disappointed by the home comforts, or any of the other aspects of the extended inventory? Is it worth pursuing the card about rewriting the bible that keeps turning up, or should I just save it for when I run out of plot and other content?

(Sorry, Failbetter staff - your game is wonderful. I just wanted to vent a bit.)

Home comforts used to be really good back when every difficulty was Narrow and one extra point made 10% of difference to every storylet. They weren’t buffed with the rest of the equipment, though, and one point tends to… not really make much difference. Their opp cards are usually not even all that great either (1.5e of stuff or a small stat boost for the Gym, for instance) so they just kinda end up clogging up your opp deck. Oh no!
The extended inventory slots that give BDR are more potent than ever, mind, like Transports and Clubs and some Affiliations, but the only real good HCs are the Midnighter Shrine (which gives an ok boost to stats + BDR) and the stalactite bell (which also gives BDR).
I’d like to see Home Comforts buffed, too, frankly; even if it was just a few extra points of stat or a point of BDR, or even just better opp cards. They’re kinda hell grind-expensive for barely any actual benefit.

(You should probably pursue every gold-border card just to get them out of your deck /anyway/, but the one about rewriting the bible is a very cheap Affiliation with a good opp card and 4 BDR, so it’s definitely worth pursuing.)

So far I haven’t bothered with either of the two home comforts that one can get without Fate or a certain profession. I just didn’t see the need, and I didn’t want to be inconvenienced by cards that only pay 150 pence. Though if I ever decide to go for a high Scholar of the Correspondence I suppose that the library might be worth the expense.

Getting Proscribed Materials through the God’s Editors card has been quite handy when trying to go from 100+ to 250 to turn the materials into Inklings of Identity through bulk conversion, or when going from 720 to 750 after trading favours with the revolutionaries. Because I really don’t want to see Mr Pages’ requests/demands for my books whenever I have 100+ Proscribed Materials. But other than that it’s not good enough compared to more lucrative things I could spend my actions on, and I have recently decided to just save the card instead of playing that option.

That is…this thing, right?

How? A cryptic hint, or PM would be welcome here if it needs fate, 'cause getting BDR in that slot without giving up my spectacles would be super nice!

Need to spend Fate at Christmas or when opening the Cave of the Nadir for the first time.

It’s only temporary, you don’t need to be growing notability all the time, and it’s pretty easy to stay at MW maintenance levels. At some point you’ll have all the Master’s Bloods, favorable circumstances etc you could need for the foreseeable future and can switch back to Glassman quickly by spending some favorable circumstances.

But yes, you can get hte Just a Coincidence permanently, by either waiting for the holiday to come around again, or by acquiring unusual (and Fate-locked) help acquiring a Ray-Drenched Cinder to access the Nadir.

But aren’t the gold-bordered HC cards just replaced with other Standard frequency cards, so there’s no actual advantage to your deck in completing them? As you say, if the opp cards were more lucrative or interesting they might be more worthwhile.

I’ll do the bible thing as soon as I figure out how to write short stories. Something to do with the palace, someone said, but I can’t find the option. Not going to spend a fortune on candles, or bother grinding them. Thanks for the tips though!

You’ll want to play the gold cards to put the storylets into the Bazaar Side-streets, allowing them to be more effectively ignored.

The stories you’re wanting to create are located in the Empress’ Court, which you can access through the Shuttered Palace. When your Persuasive is high enough you’ll be able to write masterpieces for the Court. Any Epic Poem or Novel aside from a Tale of the Future will work for God’s Editors.

That depends on how card draws are calculated. If you first draw card frequency, this would be the case. If you draw each card on a one-by-one basis, with an amount of draws for each card dependant on its rarity, it would help. In either case, there’s such a lot of cards it won’t help much.

For the short stories you seek, you need to spend contacts in the palace to move to the court, and then get the options. Beware that if you move somewhere else, such as the flit, you’ll have to pay contacts to get back to the court again. The storylet you need to play is Spend some time at the Court

So, most Home Comfort items don’t do much for stats currently, but some of them look kinda nice to have. Specifically, I’m interested in what yields the Extraordinary Drinks Cabinet. A fatelocked option on a storylet that, once completed, will render it unavailable? That was my assumption, although digging through search results seems to indicate it might be another Christmas thing. That’s still a while away, but is it? If so, what would I be looking at to obtain it?

It’s christmas, yeah. I’ll pm you the hows

Thanks! I wouldn’t have guessed. And now the bell thing looks even better. Hrm.

Even if home comforts are generally useless, at least the thematic variety is nice. The selection of ships, too. I just wish that the Young Stags’ Club wasn’t the only alternative to the Parthenaeum. Don’t recall which thread it was, but there was a discussion on the masculine-leaning tone of the clubs that are available now. Someone said that, for a more feminine domain, historical examples would include stuff like God’s Editors? Of course it doesn’t seem likely that there’ll be a club remotely akin to the affiliation, but any org in addition to the current two clubs would be filling a need. (Or maybe I just cringe at the bloomers. Why is it not a stag head?)

Then there’s the distribution of BDR. Is it intentional that in the expanded inventory Respectable is especially easy to stack?

Yes, the ease of raising Respectable is deliberate.

So I was not the only one to be disappointed after spending my 12 strong backed labours. Wouldn’t it make sense for the developers to re-equilibrate those home comforts? Because as they are, they really don’t give to players any feeling of reward, as it is the case for any other challenge in the game. Usually spending much for a storylet gives you either good items or good story, but the Gymnasium gives you neither. It doesn’t look like Failbetter policy, as the rest of their content is very good, so I think it is more like those items have been forgotten.

Glad I read this thread. I was about to try for the gymnasium. Won’t bother now.

At least the gymnasium’s opp. card is 150 ppa. That’s not ultimate, but acceptable.

But here’s a thought - many of these look like they should be associated with a quirk …

150 ppa in a useful resource would be acceptable. But I have no lack of Rostygold, so I’d never play that card, just like I don’t play my Gang of Hoodlums card. Or my God’s Editors card, though I did play that one back when I thought it was worth my time to convert Proscribed Materials.

Actually, I found the second option on God’s Editors to be more useful, as it’s one of the few places where you can raise Austere without lowering Hedonist. The menace reduction + Connection CP is a nice bonus to that.

But yeah, would really like to see some changes in Home Comforts, either boosting their stats, or adding a point of BDR. Heck, even a quirk-boosting opp card would be good.
