How do I dock at a new port?

Am I doing something wrong?[li]

Every time I try to dock at a new port, it opens the journal asking me for my background as if I’ve just started a new game. I can’t click anything. I have to alt-F4 to get out.[/li][li]
[/li][li]EDIT: I can confirm that the suggestion from someone else of not choosing a background allows me to dock.[/li][li]

I’ve managed to dock with and without choosing a background.
But docking only triggers when approaching the dock from the correct side.
