I just completed the main part of Heart’s Desire - the final ending will be unlocked in 24 hours. Obviously, spoilers follow.
Over the course of this whole final chapter, the writing did a really good job of taking the romance out of the whole thing bit by bit. I mean, a lot of players would have chosen this ambition for its romantic flair originally - "Win your Heart’s Desire!" and all that. In the end, it was only about cheating, and cheating again. Was there a single bout that wasn’t fixed? At times, I felt like being part of the betting mafia, setting up boxing fights. That’s one part of why I didn’t care about winning in the end.
I really felt for the Bishop and his longing to return South. I would’ve gladly let him win, but unfortunately that wasn’t in the cards. Still, it was an absolute pleasure to have my dreams of Thunder blow away the Manager’s schemes, and return Tristram Bagley’s mind - that deed alone makes me feel like the winner of this tournament!
I guess I wasn’t alone in underestimating the monkey - after the Honours round, I was sure Mr Pages would be my final opponent. As it was, I savoured all the visions and temptations offered to me by the Bazaar - very beautiful, very entertaining - only to laugh in the Masters’ faces and gladly let the monkey win (I was very much reminded of Galadriel at that moment, ‘passing the test’). Whether he will really end the Marvellous now, or choose to have his humanity back after all, is up to him. I hope I won’t be bothered to help him decide (though it wouldn’t surprise me).
It was the Boatman who really set me on my path: "Ask yourself: is the Marvellous the only way to achieve your heart’s desire? … Don’t confuse the game with the trophy. The heart makes cages for us all." Probably my favourite bit of text in the whole Ambition, and perfectly true. And wasn’t he screwed, even though he won? "Oh yeah, you can have a replacement - if we find someone, haha." Bloody Masters. And Bloody Bazaar as well. Too bad I didn’t get a chance to blow it up after all :D
I haven’t looked at any forum threads or the wiki during this whole time, in order to be able to play unspoiled, which was a good thing. I have no idea what final reward is still in stock for me tomorrow, but I almost don’t care. I already got The Thief-Oath of Tristram Bagley, A Bestiary of the Hearts’ Desires and A Dream of Truth-Strangling, so I really can’t complain. In the end, the journey was very much the destination (no idea if this is true for the other ambitions as well), which is fine by me. I now have Parabola to explore, and gazillions of experiments to do in my Lab…
Thank you Failbetter, for all the new content, and all the stuff still to come! And for consistently maintaining high quality over these many years! :)
