Heart's Desire Finale

I’ve finished the Ambition and gained my Heart’s Desire (though I’m still waiting for the epilogue opportunity card). I chose Power and began my ascention to the ranks of the Masters which, like the case of many here, is a perfect fit for my Destiny . Due to my Revolutionary sympaties and still-existing humanity (at least for the next 100 years or so), I look forward for the opportunity to destroy the Masters from within.

And I just have to say: thank you Failbetter for this amazing story and epic finale, scratch that, thank you for Fallen London in general! And thanks everyone in this forum, it’s been great sharing this experience with you and I can’t wait to see what comes next! :)

Do any of the professions offer particular advantages for completing this ambition? Apologies if it has already been discussed - I have not read the whole thread as I am otherwise trying to avoid spoilers before I can enjoy it firsthand!

For those wondering if there’s a Lab Assistant after completing Heart’s Desire…well, there is. It’s a shame that I’m too busy making up the resources I spent that I can’t visit the lab for myself, esp. since I have the visionary student unlocked.

I’m assuming there is no ‘easy’ way to get the Ray-Drenched Cinder for training with Pages right? Guess I might have to wait till Christmas…

As someone who’s conducted 8 expeditions to a Shrine and spent about a day worth of actions on seeking curios without finding a single skull (got a single Brass Ring, though), I really wish I could just buy it for something of equal or somewhat greater value.

In fact, I have the necessary renown and favours to just get it as a favour from the Factotum, and had I not grinded the skulls the honest way to open the Nadir, I could’ve just done that. Why can’t I just ask him now? He doesn’t need to know who’s going to get that Cinder.

The easy way was the last end-of-season story, the reward for which was quite clearly chosen with this finale in mind.

Well, if that is indeed Failbetter’s intention, then they aren’t winning over returning players or players who are not exceptional friends, for that matter.

Besides, there is a chance that instead of a Ray-Drenched Cinder, you get a Vial of Tears like I did from playing the same season conclusion, so it is was merely luck that gave you exactly what you needed.

Strictly speaking, Pages’ hat is optional, so nothing is technically stopping you from moving onwards if you get tired of grinding for the Cinder. However, I do sympathize with the people who want to make the most out of their Ambitions after coming so far, and I hope that you get what you need sooner than later.

I have one of my other characters going for Eyeless Skull crap-shoots just to get a Cinder for posterity’s sake, and he’s actually doing better than the othter two that are going for Eyeless Skulls - he already has 4 in under two days. (No, he doesn’t have Heart’s Desire.)

Flipping fickle RNGs. UPDATE: Now he has five - in just two days, and he’s not on Heart’s Desire. Flipping RNGs.

Well, 5 skulls take an average of ~700 actions. That’s a lot, but still relatively small compared to other grinding required to fulfill the Ambition.

Is there any advantage in asking play advice to all the remaining players?

I asked advice to three of them, but i would have some difficulties in getting the material for the other two…

I asked advice of all of the remaining players just to see what each would say, and as far as I can tell there was no mechanical advantage to doing so. If you just want to read the text, it’s all echoed in my journal: https://www.fallenlondon.com/profile/Maria%20Russell-Black (But I have finished the Marvellous at this point, so if you want to avoid spoilers you may want to wait until you’re further along before reading it.)

Huh, is this exclusive to any particular ending? I entered the lab and can’t see any new options of assistants.

The option to get Cora Bagley as a Lab Assistant appears only after you draw her epilogue opportunity card in London. So you might have to wait (I drew the card the day after I finished the ambition), but the option should be open to everyone.

Oh, thanks! I still haven’t seen the epilogue card, so this explains it (never change, Fallen London RNG, never change…)

Will there be a new master at Christmas now? Or with how many of these ambitions have unfolded, will there fewer Masters?
edited by Winthropx on 5/7/2020
The Christmas Masters are their Nomen, so all the need is blood, and it’s implied that they have plenty on hand already. Otherwise we wouldn’t see a Mirror’s Sacks. Or be able to buy some.
Ah, Mirror’s Sacks… is not as straightforward as it seems. Here’s what it answers if you work with Benthic and ask it to take your ignorance.

With the revelation from The Shallows and Nemesis taken into account, I think it’s safe to assume this Noman was made with Cups’ blood and instructed to act like Mirrors (or maybe it doesn’t need instruction to begin its impersonation, who knows).

Back in the old days (read: old iteration of Sacksmas event), Sacks needn’t the Masters to rise from Lacre and was its own being. But that stopped (read: Sacksmas received an overhaul and the current Sacks story was added), and the Masters decided to honor the tradition of Mr Sacks even if it’s no longer what it was (or at least that’s how I understand this option).

Veils isn’t around. Cups isn’t around either. ;)
Veils is around… in Adoration ending.

Now I have my own request: Could anyone that let the Monkey win share the living story message from when the conclusion arrives? I maintain a document for Heart’s Desire (and other ambitions), and the person I sourced this particular ending from didn’t save their living story message. The Wiki doesn’t seem to record living story messages.

Edit: Ah, I missed this one.

I’m not aware of any profession getting advantage for completion, but in progressing the ambition itself there are several professional advantages you can get, an option each for: Correspondent, Monster-Hunter, Crooked-Cross (if you play against the Topsy King), and Midnighter (if you play against the Bishop of St Fiacre’s).

Speaking of, the result of the Midnighter option is missing from my record as well, and I’d appreciate it if anyone could share it here.

I will note there is a chance it might be bugged. It’s meant to give you 10001 ambition quality so you can unlock cora as aassistant, but at least in my case the card set it to 3400, locking me out of both the card and cora.

(Assuming of course that my being mean to cora to follow up on Beechwood did not cause that, which, if so, real bad form not putting ANY kind of &quotThis will not let you hire her as a assitant&quot note on that choice. I’d have never picked it if that was a thing.)

It definitely isn’t the case - I was mean to Cora but still got the card and she didn’t even seem to be angry at me. And now I see an option to hire her at the lab.
