Grinding Making Waves

What’s the best way of doing this (and Is a Salon a cost effective method for getting Making Waves)?

Most Cost Effective is in the Empress Court (if you’ve not been kicked). Next down the line is Private Suppers. Trust me though, if you’re wanting higher than 2 notability, this will take a few weeks. Salon isn’t best as far as costs, but it gives MASSIVE boosts.

Scheme is the way you’ll be able to get the Making Waves check less of a risk, and the only way apart from plain old gambling that you’ll get 5 Notability in a reasonable amount of time. Private Suppers also offer 1-2 Making Waves if you lose the Persuasive check, and also lets you stay in your lodgings where you may summon the Amanuensis without needing to go through the bother of heading back into the Empress’ Court. The main benefit of the Empress’ Court option is that you’ll get items (which is really nice), and you don’t need to find someone to spam suppers with.

If you want to get to Notability 5 having a Salon and staying in the Court is a pretty good way to do it. Private Suppers would be slightly faster if you have someone to work with, and if you don’t have a Scheme then your best bet is to summon the Amanuensis every time your Making Waves hits 15 to hopefully succeed despite the low probability. Or at least that’s how I did it.

You lose 1 notability a week, so to make any progress at all you must get atleast two points before Time the Healer kicks in. You will lose 1 notability, but atleast the week would not have been a complete loss.

If you have a surplus of souls and the Amanuenses card, you can also bribe the man for an increase in Making Waves. I think it’s something like 1000 souls nets you a random increase.

It’s probably better for topping of your MW if you find yourself a little short after drawing the card than as a straight MW accumulation method.

You can use Society Connections to increase MW too, if you have a surplus.

Yeh, I’m really regrettin’ that I don’t have access to the Court nomore. Darn Privy Counselor.

How? Just went to court to see, but trading in only gets me Street Signs…?

It’s an option on the Amanuensis card.

Ohhh - right. I knew that. Duh - misinterpreted. Oh, well, there are worse places to be.

When I investigated the potential effects of the Mercies I noticed that they can give a rather large boost to Making Waves if one invites them to one’s salon, which requires certain Airs of London and costs 10 scheme CPs. Has anyone tried to grind the connections needed to get the scheme CPs and then rob drunks until the airs are right? Seems like that could be faster, but I suppose it might not be cost effective, depending on how often one would want Notability. Probably cost effective if one wants to maintain Notability though. And the Mercies aren’t the only ones one could invite, right?

I’m not entirely sure the Mercies thing is fully implemented yet; that option clearly states you get more out of it of Lettice is your Companion - not your pet. Maybe in the future you’ll be able to cement your relationship further, but for now I’m not sure you get a bonus out of having her “equipped”

I’m pretty sure Companion is what you call human &quotpets&quot. Constant Companion has been renamed Spouse.

There are some cards that raise making waves as well. I now always play them - give glim to the soft hearted widow; buy drinks for waiters (bohemian) or the docks; attend a dinner (society) or use the society connection to raise persuasive (probably only worth it if you haven’t got to maintain a salon. One of the connected pets has a bizarre challenge to raise making waves.

Then you get MW when you complete an expedition; a K&C duel; publish a newspaper and possibly finish other things but I haven’t come across them yet.

I’ve got an Orphanage and I managed to get to Notability 5 reasonably easily with a bit of gambling on the Notability challenge but that takes echoes and items and I was very lucky in drawing lots of Tower of Eyes cards. I did use the Airs trick to get the options I wanted to play and really need to build up my connected Orphans again.

I’ve also got the habit of playing Slowcake even when I only have very little chance of succeeding - those 4% chances sometimes work:)

Just thought of a couple more - if you successfully poison someone you get MW and if you accept a scandal dupe. Not that menace raising is the nicest way to do this and I’m not sure if you get enough cps to make it worthwhile.

I have a question connected to grinding MW: several of the scheme preparations need the grinding of some Connections - Urchins, Society, Bohemian (others?)

What is the faster option to grind those connections?
(I’m especially interested in Urchins because I have an orphanage, and it’s not that easy!)

Am I correct that Amanuensis card does not allow to repeat the Society to MW option as it did before ? Tried that, got my random amount of MW and went back to Story tab…

Urchins - If you have less than connected 10 go to the carnival. After that:-
Fun with the Fisher Kings in the Flit gives some connected urchins.
Apart from that the opportunity cards -
When their card comes up give them a weasel;

Conflict cards
the Widow is probably easiest to raise in Spite
the Hell/Urchin one gives wounds so best avoided if your wounds level is getting dangerous
Docks get up to 5/10 at the carnival and then play the Urchin option on their card.

But there is only one option on the Orphanage card that takes any of your connection - so it might be more efficient to make money and buy Winsome Orphans, clothes and tinctures of vigour.[li]

A question; if one holds the card and then uses the option in one’s Lodgings to summon the Amanuensis, will the card vanish?

I doubt it, as the option in one’s Lodgings just links to (I think) another copy of the storylet, but I’m not too sure how StoryNexus works. Why don’t you find out for us!
