Fate-Locked Content

Really? I finished that one recently, and made the same decision after telling myself I wouldn’t. I thought it was really painful and haunting. For me, the narrative payoff wasn’t the ending itself, but the fact that you are making a choice between doing something you know is horrible and choosing not to know a secret.
Yeah, I liked the ending itself, but what you find on the painting was sort of lackluster.

As far as I know, that particular option bears an interesting distinction of being the only triple-Fatelocked piece of content in Fallen London.

Unfortunately, I haven’t saved the text. All I recall is that neither of them were in favor of you-know-who’s ambitious plan.

Do you mind spoilerizing it in whitetext? I sold the painting and got a good sum (don’t remember what now, but it was “a lot” at the time) and always wondered what it said.

Heh. I cleared the painting, saw what was on it, but that was so long ago that I forgot, and I still wonder what it said :(

I have, in fact, received a pair of PMs. Thanks for those!

can you pass them on to me too? I’m curious…

Agreed. I am also very curious to know how that turns out. I rather regretted the choice, it’s sort of out of character for me, considering the zeal with which I’ve pursued the Name.

I’m curious if anyone has taken the second fate-locked choice in the Jack of Smiles case. Would you say it is worth the 10 fate cost?

I’m torn between spending fate on it or saving it for future fate-locked storylines.

If you mean the one I think you mean - after the Zee-voyage - then I’d recommend it. Good rewards and fascinating lore.

I’m currently pursuing it and so far so good. I haven’t been disappointed in the Fate spent yet, but I haven’t completed it yet either.

I’m not asking for spoilers but is there any significant difference between the two fate-locked options for the Secrets Framed in Gold storyline? One of the costs 19 Fate and the other 22 Fate. Which one would you recommend?

I assume you mean the two at the beginning, regarding the Forger? Because, in that case, the more expensive one is only necessary if you haven’t yet met the Forger in New Newgate.

Yes, that’s the one I meant, apologies for not clarifying. Thank you :)

Asking for the community’s opinion on Fate-locked storylets… I’m currently quite undecided between the Fate-locked continuation of Theological Husbandry and Flute Street. Theological Husbandry does give some interesting pets and is slightly cheaper, but I remember somebody telling me on the forum that Flute Street is a very good storylet by my personal favourite Fallen London writer - Nigel Evans. Which one would you suggest me to peruse? Or maybe a totally different one, like the Foreign Office continuation for example?

The Theological Husbandry promises future rewards as does the Foreign office. Flute street has the most lore so I would pick that one. The ironic thing is there’s an pet in Flute street you can only get while pursing beast to breed. So you know.
My Take, from best to worst:

The Soul Trade
A Day at the Races (now that it warns you that it is sending you to another region and emptying your hand).
A Visit from a Cloaked Stranger(Neathymon)
Set fire to your mirror (travel from Bedlam to the Mirror Marches)
Exceptional Friendship
Uncovering Secrets Framed In Gold
Flute Street (Though, they’ve sold themselves short - it’s two new regions, not one, and the trip there is the highpoint)
An auspicious day for gardening
Zubmarine
Apply a bottle of FF Gebrandt’s Verdant Stimulator
Long Lost Daughter
The Rubbery Murders
And here’s mine, against best to worst, of the ones I’ve done:

Exceptional Friendship
The Soul Trade (because it permanently gives you opportunities to boost Connections)
Flute Street (ditto, and I agree with whitelaughter that it’s really two regions)
Day at the Races (probably the most fun of the Fate-Locked Stories I’ve bought)
Getting the Formula for Empyrean Redolence (which makes it possible to breed cool new pets permanently!)
Buying my Swift Zee Clipper (Buying it the hard way would have taken forever, and I’ve had lots of fun exploring the Unterzee!)
Secrets of the Foreign Office (has some choice tidbits about the uberplot, and gives you a better choice of Constant Companions than you otherwise get)
Velocipede Squad (gets you a nifty mode of transport, but kind of dull as a story)
The fate-locked end of the Jack story
Uncovering Secrets Framed in Gold (Fun to play, but I found the ending, as I played it, to be quite a bummer)
Apply a bottle of FF Gebrandt’s Verdant Stimulator to your plant (too little bang for your Fate, in my opinion)

Here’s my breakdown of the options I’ve purchased. They fall into three categories:

Would highly recommend / shouldn’t miss:
A visit from a Cloaked Stranger (Labyrinth of Tigers / Empyrean Redolence / Theological Husbandry) - I just like collecting my own bestiary, and there is the promise of more story to come
Flute Street - one of the better experiences in the game, especially if you’re fascinated by the rubbery men like I am
Soul Trade - the story that keeps on giving! I wish I had started it early in my career in Fallen London, but I’m glad I did eventually do it.

Worth the cost if it’s something you enjoy:
A Day at the Races - a great low-cost buy especially if you are the appropriate level. A nice break from the usual.
Take on a Rubbery Pupil - Not much reward, but a bit of variety and low cost. The failures are particularly humorous to me.
Exceptional Friendship - extra actions, a few extra stories, and keeps food on the game writer’s tables.
Zubmarine - who doesn’t want a zubmarine?! (it’s probably easier to grind now than when I got it, but still the thought of zailing one of these is what initially drew me to Fallen London)

Might not choose again:
A Long-lost daughter - so much potential here, but it’s just a short story with few to no tie-ins later. I hold out hope that it will be extended, but not much hope.
The two Jack of smiles fate options - These just didn’t do it for me for some reason.

I know there were a few other fate purchases here and there, but I can’t seem to recall them. Next on my list to try is probably the foreign office.

Have I missed something? I’m at “Involved in the Soul Trade 6” and “Shepherd of Souls 5”. I received one opportunity card soon after hitting Shepherd of Souls 5, but nothing since then, and it’s been a while. Is there somewhere I need to be or something I need to do to trigger anything else?

The Shepherd of Souls opportunity card is rare, but great for reducing menaces and boosting connections. The Merchant equivalent is always available, and is profitable but risky.
